Wonderful collection of videos. Even the rain was briefly crying on your camera to see the last of these freight workings. You picked wonderful locations to film them.

Glad you enjoyed them Pat, filming the first of these liners I thought there was a least a few months left not a few weeks :( Very sad to see it end but this did happen before back in 2012 before it returned less than a year later so here's hoping.

Thanks David. It'll surely return in the future, makes no sense not to have container traffic on the rails here. How DFDS can justify road transfer from Ballina to Waterford as being more viable is beyond me.

@@TheIrishMainline There's a good road at least as far as Limerick now. If it takes an hour out of the Dub - Westport by car, it must improve the freight by road option too. The other side would be truck drivers' wages have stagnated for over a decade. It is simply cheaper at this point to put 12 drivers on the road for a day

Glad you enjoyed it Paddy many thanks. The DFDS did cease a number of years back for a time before returning. Seems a bit more final this time but I'm sure another operator will step in sooner rather than later. The pocket wagons may well have a future on the IWT liner, they were used for a time on it before.

Much appreciated Luke thanks :) DFDS simply don't see the rail option as viable anymore. Loadings had been very poor since Christmas and 2 liners a week dropped to one since then with them even struggling to fill that. www.rte.ie/news/munster/2018/0528/966660-waterford-port/

I think that shot at Lukeswell was my favourite of the batch. I noticed that each train hauled 12 wagons, is this the maximum haul aloud or is it more simply due to the lack of freight running on the rails and hence its demise? Paul

Thanks for watching Paul. Yes that's the limit. Freight trains, regardless of loco are limited to 36 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit)on the network which equates to 12 timber wagons, 12 pocket wagons or 18 x 48 foot flats, mainly due to the length of crossing loops on the network.
