Not getting a set on 3 or 4 in this setup is brutal. Especially if it happens again after your first set. It’s a death sentence when your competitors get 40 troops and you get 5.

That's essentially why I can't stomach progressive. Feels way more luck based than fixed [at least against competent opponents... not to mention perfect information of no FoW ramps the luck up even more] Also bonus fun, when your opponents set twice in a row going from 5 cards to 3 by turn end, and then next turn cashing again for a huge short term power spike as seen at 43:45 [and actually orange's kill of purple just before right?] dude suddenly has +100 troops on the fish and the last bonus is using balanced blitz so that the math on what you need for each stack is much easier. no true random to make it more risky to go for a [especially spread out] kill, which interestingly is how the game was originally designed. big luck of prog. cards + extra luck with real dice

Question - why is the grand finals a Bo1? Seems like that's *a lot* of RNG. Wouldn't it be better to play 2 or 3 games and have a ranking system with points? Plus, it'd be possible to show off more rulesets.
@jentezijlstra
@jentezijlstra Жыл бұрын
Yeah was showcased pretty well with the glitch, but than again, the grand finale wouldn't be grand in it wasn't Bo1. It the same in many other sports/tournaments.

@@DevinDTV Sorry to disagree but thr biggest sport in the world in the biggest competition it is just one last game. The big difference here is that the final in normal sports is between 2 sides and in risk is between 6 and there are so many factors that maybe a different setup will have a better match than random/luck movements.

@@krlos2588 Right, but that's a single game after a series of single games. Even if you argue that the World Cup has the Group Stage, then that's a clear demarcation of stages, with everything in the Finals Stage (quarter, semi, grand) sharing the same format. This is a single finals game after a series of best-of's finals. Does seem odd to leave the most important game up to the most chance.

It would be infeasible to organize multiple Grand World Championship games each game at this would take a long time. Not only that, participants would have incentives to target and gang up on those who won previous games or close to winning the title. Best of 1 streamlines the time the grand Championship takes and eliminates the most bias from grudges held from previous games.

After rewatching the ending i think that what happened definitely decided the fate of the game as not only Pierre didn't get to choose how to distribute his troops and play the rest of his turn but also he didn't get to choose which cards to trade in and that could have made it more possible not to have a set on four. As far as it concerns me the ending is very controversial, to the point that this game maybe should be replayed. But that's for the tournament organizers to decide.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy But Pete, Pierre didn't get the chance to pick which cards he would trade, it was made randomly by the game, and we all know how this goes and how it can probably use a wildcard instead of other cards. Think about it. And of course since Pierre was lacking in speed it was crucial for him to use as much time as possible. I truly believe that this glitch had a major impact in the endgame.

I don't see how this game could become competitive if there is a HUGE difference in having a set on 3, 4, or 5. It's too much randomness, the better player will win most games, however important games of people with similar skills are unpredictable. You have to make the finals best of 30 to secure some statistical fairness.

I think Qlwl's plan was to keep the 3 biggest players close to each other to disincentivize them going for kills until a fish could be found and, from there, capitalize on good trade luck to scoop up the pieces when one of them overextended (he was likely hoping for White to do it). He didn't factor in that Orange would not be the fish since he traded first and, as a result, Orange's positioning allowed him to take down Qlwl. A clever idea in concept that failed due to Orange knowing he needed to be first trade to avoid dying first. Qlwl breaking Blue would have made his plan impossible because Blue was the check on Black to basically force White to be the one going for the kill. Qlwl likely also wanted to achieve another goal by frustrating Pete, allowing for the player most likely to go rogue to upset one of the larger players' games. A bit of good strategy that didn't pan out because Pete was too dialed in. All in all, Qlwl's game fascinated me the entire time and I hope to see more interesting play like this in the future that combines the 2 most important things in Risk: theoretical "good" play and psychological warfare.

Orange had the most to lose by breaking the no-card stalemate (11 troops), so was it really a good idea for Orange to do that?
@theJACKHAMMER13
@theJACKHAMMER13 Жыл бұрын
@@kandaffar2344 It's either let Qlwl's plan play out (whatever it may have been) or take the chance that those 11 troops won't matter over the course of the game because you can get a kill that puts you back in the game. When you either can't guess the opponent's strategy or they're doing something that you can assume benefits them, chances are high that you're the fall guy for their scheme. At least 2 of the haves in the game had inevitable kill lines on Orange. Do you sit for 11 turns or so just to die first? Or do you accept first set and bolster your positions accordingly? To me, that was Orange's only winning move.

I dropped from 1 win away from master at rank 40,000 world when I had 7 progressive games in a row where 2nd/3rd turn ins I did not have a set on 4, and lost every single one because of it. I dropped to 280,000 beginner, lost 1 win from master rank and fell all the way down to beginner rank lol. So Pete is so right that no turn in on 4 means death in progressive, it’s ALWAYS worth it to go for kill on someone with 5 cards that late in the game. Sometimes, luck just doesn’t go your way. Curious to hear your take on this. I realized as I thought through the skipping on cards in the beginning... if everyone is down to skip, it may actually make some sense even if 2 players are getting a slight lead, since progressive is essentially about getting the right [lucky?] cards at the right time and then [taking a RISK!] killing someone at the right time for their cards. By getting a few more troops on the board, you're reducing the chances that someone will be able to kill anyone with the next set[s?], because the set is less % of the troops of the board as more get added. Hard to say when the +2 blue is getting is equaled by the +2/5 every subsequent set gets. With 30 troops each, hard to imagine someone getting attacked full out when the next round of sets is worth what, 20? In general I agree with you because of that, but I could see a world where someone feels safer having 40 before starting the cash in, even if 1 opponent gets to have 50 because of it. On a sidenote, I wonder if everyone is playing to win the finals? Or are people playing for 'best finishing position'?...
@TheKillPeteStrategy

Skipping benefits the players who are outgenerating the other players. Qlwl was not one of those so it didn't make sense to start doing it. It is possible to stalemate progressive World Dom which would have been an absolutely terrible thing to happen in the world finals and has happened before.

Congrats to making to the final again and getting the 4th place Pete!! Can you explain to a guy who has been retired from progressive why it was the purple player who should have gotten the 5th card instead of skipping it? I mean I get it that he is the 1st player turn wise, but by seeing that he is giving the advantage for blue and white, why not for you, black or orange to get a card to immediately stop that? Another question is why the purple player immediately got a card after the orange player did (instead of skipping again), so instead of 4 troops he was just going to get 6 troops which isn't a big difference and it felt that he skipped those turns for nothing. Also that's a huge shame that the developers haven't yet fixed the bug which happened for the white player, this bug has been going for ages now, but since it now happened in the tourney finals, let's hope that the developers will finally bring their to attention to it. Finally, I agree with the top comment that the final round which is best of 1 just looks too luck/RNG based, looks like the winner and the top 3 places are being selected very randomly, which doesn't make as much excitement as it could if there were more games played to select the winners.

'retired' ha. There is the potential to stalemate progressive world dom. We saw it in the finals last summer on 2209 that Maren won as a bot. By skipping, Qlwl is effectively saying: I would like and expect someone else to play suboptimally so that I can gain advantage. It took almost two full turns for Orange to take the bait and do so. All the while the player with 12 territories is getting and extra troops and the player with a bonus is getting two. If it made sense for anyone to skip it could have been arguable for blue since they had the bonus and would have been able to afford to sit through the first round of trades since they were getting +2 a turn. This also should have been broken by either black or purple. If I stopped the skipping I would be putting myself at the beginning of the trades costing myself 2 troops and netting Qlwl +13. It's pretty upsetting to see how many folks are complaining about the glitch thinking it had a bearing on the outcome. Pierre lost the game for the same reason that Amoo and Myself did. Not having a set on four. The other main criticism I keep hearing about the setting being too lucky seems a bit based on a fallacy. If course luck matters more in a tournament final because there is almost no skill gap between the top players. Everyone who made it to this final is so good that of course if everyone is playing nearly optimally the outcome will depend more on luck than usual.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy here are some of my understandings on progressive. first 3 players had a slightly higher possibilities to win because of they act earlier. I'd rather be the first player than the last to act. if the first player skipped, he has very low chance to win, based on he didn't get the turn 1 bonus that 4-6 players get. therefore, made the chance to kill him is much easier than the regular 6th player.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy You keep saying that he lost because he didn't have a set on 4 but i think that at this point you are refusing to see the other facts that i stated in my other comments. Such as the fact that given Pierre's disadvantage in speed it was crucial for him to have as much time as possible and distribute his troops as he would like and also that he didn't even had the chance to choose which cards to trade in. He could have a wildcard as far as we know. Never mind, I assume this is the official attempt to just hide the problem under the carpet (i.e. the glitch) and try to diminish its value, but i don't see it like that. I wonder if Pierre has taken it as lightly because i would be mad if i were in his shoes.

@@johnvalsamidis5902 the glitch was extremely unlucky as an aggressive play by White w/ that match could’ve at least given them a fighting chance by not giving Black an extra 8 troops just from board control while also making them harder to kill by spreading out but w/ top players when the trade is at 80 I'm pretty sure the game ends exactly the same. Def unfortunate for White but I'm honestly more tilted at Purple skipping a 2nd time WHILE protecting Blue's bonus & Blue panic popping Pete's stack for no reason. I do think a BO2/3 w/ anonymized players would prob be a more fair test of skill but that requires way more work, organizer trust & post-production to make the game watchable for viewers so I get the simplicity of having a single Grand Final w/ high skill cap settings. GGWP to all the finalists in any case!

Was it a glitch or did Pierre simply run his clock too far down before getting the kill on Blue? Seems like he should have been able to at least place his troops and have 20 seconds or so to attack 6-10 times before his turn was ended/played for him.

Skipping seems like a move with some merrit, when there few troops on the map, as the chance of being killed if the players can set on 3 after the first round of sets becomes higher. killing someone for cards when everyone have 50 troops are way less likely to be right compared to everyone having 35 troops. So having round skips might be right for the weakest set player, even if some of the players gets 5ish additional troops. If thats the case, it might also be right to attack 2 times when the 4 card is being taken, going up to 12 territories.

After watching all this and both world tournaments of yours before it, I’ve grown to hate progressive card trades. It takes the impetus off the skill for maneuvering territories and bonuses, which is the fun part of risk, and puts it on card draws. If I wanted to see someone play for card draws I’d go to Vegas.

@TheCBgamer1414
@TheCBgamer1414 Жыл бұрын
Basically no one wants the terrible plus 4 trade in progressive cards (which go up 4,6,8,10,12,15,20,25 etc. ) so basically first player can potentially skip a card by not attacking a territory and try to give the plus 4 to another player and then be last in trade sequence. The problem here was that everyone knows of this and no one took a card so as Pete said benifited amoo and Pierre.
