There was an interesting border issue near me. The Aldi in Monmouth is technically in England, despite the town being pretty much entirely in Wales, since they built it on the other side of the border. This meant they didn't need to charge for plastic bags despite Welsh shops needing to, but they did anyway, there was a certain amount of outrage in the local paper when it was found out they were just pocketing the difference.

The finnish - russian train is probably the most enjoyable way to travel to other country. The Allegro train takes about 3,5h (from Helsinki) or less (nearer border) to St. Petersburg and it is super easy way to travel. You go to train, you have passport + visa. You sit down with your luggage, then some time later you are on finnish border, the border guards check the train for drugs etc. (drug dogs might be there) and then you go to russian side and russian border guards jump in. Then the train continues to travel and while you travel forward, they will check your passport and visa in the train and maybe check your luggage. Then some time later the train stops and the border guards jump off and you continue to russia. Coming back the same process is done but in reverse. Barring countries you can travel without documents, this was the best experience. Compared to flying, it's totally different level of comfortable. No hassle at check-ins or security checks, when you are in station, you need only to board the train and at the destination leave it, otherwise you can just sit and enjoy the trip. Only thing i had to interact with the border guards was giving my passport and saying that one bag is clothes and the other is laptop. 7/7 recommend to anyone wanting to visit Russia, come to Finland for a vacation, enjoy Finland few weeks and then take Allegro to St. Petersburg and spend week or two there.

There is an option without visa (not sure if it's still valid), involving a ferry/cruise trip from Helsinki to St-Petersburg, I believe, although conditions apply, it's for a maximum of 72 hours, you need a registered guide, you need to sleep on the boat, and the company has to have the paperwork in order.

I originally assumed the reason the trains were so big was that Finland used Russian gauge, but no: Finnish gauge is actually _4 mm wider_ than Russian gauge. (Is that close enough to be considered compatible?)
@1978jra8 жыл бұрын
+Nillie Yes it is compatible,in Finland gauge is 1524mm and in Russia 1520mm. Allegro is 1522mm. (Allegro is name of the train.) fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sm6

+Nillie Oooh, curious. I thought it was like that for the same reason
@Rebasepoiss8 жыл бұрын
+Nillie The reason trains are so big in Finland is because the loading gauge (i.e. the allowed width and height) of trains is so much bigger. The railway gauge itself doesn't play a huge role here.
@hezec8 жыл бұрын
1524 mm is exactly 5 ft, which was the gauge chosen in the Russian Empire, then including Finland. At some point the Soviet authorities decided to 'metrify' it to 1520 mm on paper while independent Finland kept the imperial standard, but they're still very much compatible in practice.

Someone from the village commented and said NO ONE uses that hut. I wonder if it's because it's so close to the border? Id hate to have a kid run off to play the wrong direction

Why do I watch to the end? Lovely scenery, lovely people and the fact I always learn something new? Didn't know about the stressing of syllables in Finnish but now I do! Would be nice if you could talk about how you got into linguistics or coding or your favourite developments in tech. Even if its just chatting about articles from futurism.com I'd enjoy it because you always seem to add perspectives I hadn't thought about.

I stayed to hear Tom swear, which I don't think happens too often on camera? The scripted videos are lovely, but sometimes it's nice to just get the feeling you're hanging out with people. ..in a non-nauseating way (vlog cameras with fish-eye lenses). Also, the stories behind the scripted videos, I like stories, it makes you more.. ..relatable? I don't know, I just enjoy the silliness :)

I'm still here because you two are really enjoyable and a joy to watch and why wouldn't I want to see as much as possible? And as much of that gorgeous Finnish/Russian scenery as possible. I'm in the US, which makes border crossing and visas even harder, so well, I want to experience as much as I can. I definitely want to travel one day, out to Europe, see it all, but I might as well see what I can now.

My country has a building split by the country's border with its southern neighbour. The entrance to the building is in the US, but anyone who crossed the border just to enter the building must cross back into Canada after exiting the library.

David W what a stupidity?) As far as I know you have no customs there, so why these restrictions?)

The Haskell Library, which includes an opera house, is the only building that I know of, among those that straddle the Canada-US border, that is also open to the public.
