There was an interesting border issue near me. The Aldi in Monmouth is technically in England, despite the town being pretty much entirely in Wales, since they built it on the other side of the border. This meant they didn't need to charge for plastic bags despite Welsh shops needing to, but they did anyway, there was a certain amount of outrage in the local paper when it was found out they were just pocketing the difference.

The finnish - russian train is probably the most enjoyable way to travel to other country. The Allegro train takes about 3,5h (from Helsinki) or less (nearer border) to St. Petersburg and it is super easy way to travel. You go to train, you have passport + visa. You sit down with your luggage, then some time later you are on finnish border, the border guards check the train for drugs etc. (drug dogs might be there) and then you go to russian side and russian border guards jump in. Then the train continues to travel and while you travel forward, they will check your passport and visa in the train and maybe check your luggage. Then some time later the train stops and the border guards jump off and you continue to russia. Coming back the same process is done but in reverse. Barring countries you can travel without documents, this was the best experience. Compared to flying, it's totally different level of comfortable. No hassle at check-ins or security checks, when you are in station, you need only to board the train and at the destination leave it, otherwise you can just sit and enjoy the trip. Only thing i had to interact with the border guards was giving my passport and saying that one bag is clothes and the other is laptop. 7/7 recommend to anyone wanting to visit Russia, come to Finland for a vacation, enjoy Finland few weeks and then take Allegro to St. Petersburg and spend week or two there.

There is an option without visa (not sure if it's still valid), involving a ferry/cruise trip from Helsinki to St-Petersburg, I believe, although conditions apply, it's for a maximum of 72 hours, you need a registered guide, you need to sleep on the boat, and the company has to have the paperwork in order.

ErkkiMattila - Ah I see someone else pointed that out, it was bugging me when Tom said the Russian border was right there and he could jump back and forth across - the border is actually a few hundred meters further beyond that and at that place it's basically down the middle of a river so unless Tom turned into Jesus and could walk on water... Did you know that the train tracks are different gauges in different Australian states, because before federation, each state made railways, but they didn’t confer about the width, so each state has a different width, so you have to change trains when going over state borders

Travelling within the EU is very similar to travelling within a country (not the same but similar, there are differences) so ending up in a country you're not expected to be in often isn't as a big of a deal as it is for other nations.

To be fair, this border is unusually well marked. Also, based on what they were saying, it's hard to cross, even compared to outside of schengen, like Canada-U.S. (pre covid)

I originally assumed the reason the trains were so big was that Finland used Russian gauge, but no: Finnish gauge is actually _4 mm wider_ than Russian gauge. (Is that close enough to be considered compatible?)
@1978jra
@1978jra 8 жыл бұрын
+Nillie Yes it is compatible,in Finland gauge is 1524mm and in Russia 1520mm. Allegro is 1522mm. (Allegro is name of the train.) fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sm6

+Nillie The reason trains are so big in Finland is because the loading gauge (i.e. the allowed width and height) of trains is so much bigger. The railway gauge itself doesn't play a huge role here.
@hezec
@hezec 8 жыл бұрын
1524 mm is exactly 5 ft, which was the gauge chosen in the Russian Empire, then including Finland. At some point the Soviet authorities decided to 'metrify' it to 1520 mm on paper while independent Finland kept the imperial standard, but they're still very much compatible in practice.

The scripted videos are lovely, but sometimes it's nice to just get the feeling you're hanging out with people. ..in a non-nauseating way (vlog cameras with fish-eye lenses). Also, the stories behind the scripted videos, I like stories, it makes you more.. ..relatable? I don't know, I just enjoy the silliness :)
