Book 1 was great. Just don't expect it to be like Lord of the Rings/Wheel of Time in style - expect it to be closer to the film Gladiator but with supernatural elements. There's two intersecting stories going on - one with worldshaping events, the other is a revenge story. You overwhelmingly see only the second story until they collide around 80% through.

Very much hyped for this book, although if it comes out right at the same time as Stormlight 4 it's getting the second priority spot. Tau was a great imperfect-but-mostly-sympathetic protagonist. It's like if the film Gladiator was set in an African-inspired fantasy world.

This series is right at the top of my TBR. I love fantasy as a genre because of the sense of discovering a new world, different to what I know; that is somewhat dulled by the fact that so many fantasy stories just end of up quasi-medieval western-European type settings, often with the same kinds of fantasy elements and creatures. I'm so ready for a fantasy series inspired by African culture and folklore instead of European

I haven’t read either book but I heard one criticism in the first book was the inclusion/representation of female characters and was wondering if that was improved upon in the sequel?
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
@@85dresden Like I said I haven't read it myself and I knew it was matriarchal but also heard from several reviewers I trusted that the inclusion of female characters was limited and that they hoped that would be improved in the sequel, so I was just curious if that ended up happening.
@merphynapier424 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, no it's pretty much the same. Due to Tau's new position, we do get more from a couple women but it's not *that* much more than what we got form Zuri in book one. I personally don't have an issue with it because the primarily male cast makes sense for what story we're following, and I do think that the women in the books are (for the most part) written well, so I don't take issue with it. But if you prefer books with more of a balance in how many women and men are at the forefront, this series doesn't fulfill that at this point.
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
Merphy Napier thanks for the answer! I still plan to read it since I do think it will be an action packed fantasy I will enjoy
