I remember going to Belmount on Easter 1972. The couple who ran the bookstore invited everyone to come to their wedding. Some were elderly and in suits, some wear variations of the hippy uniform. I felt comfortable in my bell bottoms. I remember this one girl, younger than me in the Sunday School Teen Class. She had some really good things to share on the Sermon on the Mount. Years later I wondered if she was Amy Grant. It was a good time to be a Jesus Freak. It still is.

Music is one of God’s indescribable gifts to us. These artists have all been gifted and used by the Lord to spread His gift to the world. Unfortunately the world and the flesh enter into everything we do too…

Larry Norman "In Another Land"..That was a tectonic shift in my cultural understanding. "This cant be real. I was drop jawed...i had one short word said twice as long : 'W O W' " / Larry Norman displaced "Street Survivors" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Then i heard "Love Song", Chuck Girard. And...Then Keith Green "Love Broke Through"...and I was sure God opened the windows of heaven. My dirty jeans and confusing teen years started to make sense. I thought : this could be enough. More than enough. No. There was more...i mean those music years got Greater. A friend from an after school bible study said i had to go to this concert in Detroit. Some guy from Ohio was playing at the Redford Theatre and he used to be on the same label ( Decca) as jimi hendrix. His name was Phil Keaggy and he played 2 guitars ; an Ovation and a Les Paul ( sunburst). He brought his band and another group of hippies with a lead singer named Greg X. Volz. The band was Petra. It means "Rock" in Greek. Everything from this ROCK was pebbles 'petros'...i later discovered that Jesus is 'Petra'...in a bible verse talking to Peter...And " Upon This Rock"...Jesus promised to build His church...and the gates of Hell would not prevail against it. So my friend and i go to this theatre. It had padded seats and curtains on the walls. ( really good theatre for music)...and the Ohio guy comes out with his Ovation guitar...and sits down and plays his classical music...the ...whole...album...( "The Master and the Musician")...i was impressed but gradually got bored. Seemed like a recital. He calls an intermission. Hmm...i thought it was over. 15 minutes later he comes out with his Les Paul and his band. And Jesus Music got a new definition. I was blown away....but later...his band was integrated with Petra and they played a set together. I remember the final song : God Gave Rock and Roll to You. And after the concert was over, i believed that was 100% true. ( this is where my post might have ended...but i cant.) Resurrection Band deserves an entire chapter. Glenn Kaiser, Stu and Roger Heiss, Wendy Kaiser and her brother the drummer ( sounded like John Bonham). This band was nuclear. The most memorable show for me was Toronto in 1980. "Colours" was the Album. And this concert displaced the band Rush. I didnt need to hear anything by Rush while this band was still playing on earth. It's still my favorite album by Resurrection Band ( i just didnt like those electric drum tones) Everything else was platinum. Colours. I can still hear the bass line intro...and then...you have to hide the crystal. Ka-boom went the volume...love it. The best ive e er heard maybe.

God will get glory in spite of what people want or do. Unless they read and know HIM in His word, that likely have missed His will. Many will call Him, "Lord, Lord" which He never knew savingly. Music is nice, but it's not the answer to anything...

RIP David McGowan who discovered all the BS going on in Laural Canyon. Check out his book Weird Senses from the Canyon and you will see that the majority of the Hit Makers parents worked in the Military Intelligence Community. Name a west coast band from back in the day and chances are their parents worked, not in just the Military , but Military Intelligence. And sadly the majority of them killed themselves. Soon after David McGowan was getting coverage on the book, he suddenly died from a rare form of cancer 😢 Do yourself a favor and check out his work. He uncovered some incredible stuff before he suddenly died. God loves the Truth Tellers and David McGowan was a Truth Teller. Viva Cristo Rey

The genre as a whole really dropped off after the mid-1990s, after Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith had released the best of their original compositions. Amy Grant began declining after about 1994. Signs of Life (1996) was the last great album by Steven and Michael's Live the Life (1998) was probably his last great album. Point of Grace had two great albums in 1995 and 1996. I would say CCM peaked no later than around this time. Michael has had some staying power but he is quite exceptional. Amy Grant is bar none the consummate Christian contemporary/crossover performer in history. Her collaborations with Michael W. Smith are insane.

@@kipptrummel2476 Disciple's 2005 album was an excellent Christian rock album. But it's not CCM. I don't recall ever hearing a single Jars of Clay song I would listen to again. I've been meaning to listen to Tourniquet. I bought an album in a thrift store but only skimmed it. I don't recognize the other bans you mentioned. CCM really died out in the early 2000s, at least the 80s/90s iteration of it. "Worship music" started to supplant CCM in the Christian radio market. Even Newsboys, Petra, Michael W. Smith, and many other top artists of the genre and Christian rock were making worship albums. Even today, our charts are heavily peppered with Hillsong, Jesus Culture, Elevation, and other self-styled worship bands. Some of the music is quite good. I commend Brooke Fraser as being perhaps the greatest singer and songwriter to have come out of HIllsong in the last 20 years. Straddling the two eras, Chris Tomlin emerged as the top artist I believe who was rising at the time the trend was moving from CCM to "worship music". Petra was one of my favorite and continues to be a favorite Christian rock band. Captured in Time and Space (1985) is a classic and is competitive with Yes, Kansas, and Styx in terms of their progressive rock. As to Christian metal, Little Rock was a big scene of Christian metal in the 90s and early 2000s. Bands such as Living Sacrifice and Soul Embraced, and this is the scene that Evanescence came out of. They renounced their associations with the Christian faith but Ben and Amy met at Christian youth camp and covered songs such as "My Tourniquet" by the Christian metal band Soul Embraced and had undeniable Christian influences. Dallas, Texas was another big scene for Christian metal during this era. Embodyment being perhaps the most successful, Society's Finest being another, the band where the infamous Tim Lambesis got his start. The "white metal" scene in Norway and Sweden also gained prominence in this time. Antestor and Vaakevandring were among the key figures in this movement. I especially recommend the Vaakevandring EP from 2004 for lovers of darker and heavier music. Back to CCM though, one artist I haven't mentioned is Phillips, Craig, and Dean, who produced solid work in the early 90s and even produced some good worship music in the mid-2000s. Wayne Watson and Wes King are yet other artists who produced solid work in the early 90s. Sorry in advance if this was TL;DR

The 90s gave us sooooo much good Jesus music. As a youth pastor then it was such a great tool to get kids’ attention and strengthen me in my own walk… those were the days

Kirk Franklin is sick of the Gospel. Why is he on here? It's not just about music.
