@@dsgp7835 I'm not sure about the name. I don't believe they were starting to look at aerodynamics a whole lot right then. Well that's Captain Obvious. Very early 80s? Not quite yet. Remember TF still running a low wing even for most of '84 until Amato/Tim Richards thought about sticking it up in the air? And that really wasn't for aerodynamics because lets face it there isn't a whole lot of drag on a dragster. What the high wing did was give them a shitload of downforce on the rear tires towards the top end. Now they could put more power to the ground down track. ET went down a little and top speed gained about 10 mph just like that. I don't recall what race that was. I want to say Gators. But in a sport where you'd kill just to pick up .05" or .10" or 3-4 mph and you bolt a high wing on, not highly sophisticated engineering, but it adds 10 mph. That's a "Holy Shit" moment. That sent everyone scrambling for aluminum tubing to fabricate struts to move the wing up immediately. A gotta doing, have it moment.

Wow! I just remembered, I used to install vinyl tops, sunroofs and headliners on cars back in the 80s and early 90s, and I was installing a headliner in a Roadrunner and this guy had a Sox and Martin car inside the shop with other beautiful Muscle cars. Shit I wonder who this guy was and why did he have all these cars. The shop was on Cottman ave. In Philly right off of 95. Anybody know of this place back then?

And yes NHRA totally killed Pro Stock turning into just a Pro Camaro class.
@danhall2197 Жыл бұрын
Yes NHRA did. By 1972 everytime the Chrysler Cars won NHRA added weight to them eventually making the HEMI uncompetitive.

Can you guys tell me ? Why didn't the Mopar hemi dominate like it did in Super stock before pro stock ? Hemi's went on to dominate the fuel classes but why were they missing in pro stock ?

Sox and Martin altered the floor pan position (sunk into the body more to reduce vehicle height) and moved both axles forward while maintaining the factory measurements from bumper to axle and wheelbase (by adding/removing fender sheet metal). In the beginning of the video the commentator says "...are not allowed to make any modifications to the factory shell..." or something to that effect. But racers did. Tech measured the rule dimensions and everything came out right. The changes were subtle enough to not be noticeable when looking at the car. But the changes made big improvements in performance in a class that was as competitive then as it is now.

Herb McCandless did that very same work, to his Duster, to achieve better wind aerodynamics, and thus faster elapsed times, which actually worked! Him and Ronnie were THE BEST 4 Speed drivers, Period!

Glidden was the king, no cheating going on in his camp. The Cleveland ford's just put it on the little mouse and the bowtie boys can't stand it. GM and particularly chevy always gonna accuse someone of cheating when they get beat.

NHRA ruined Pro Stock as they took away the "stock". Imagine a minimum 2700 pounds versus 2250 pounds. They kept changing the rules until its an all vanilla GM run that looks like a bunch of neutered funny cars. Look at the interior at 5:13. It actually looks like a car inside. After Glidden won his 85th at Englishtown pro stock is dead to me.
