I started off with the Boss ME-80 multi-effects pedal board just to get a sense of what I liked. It didn't match what I got from my Boss Katana, so I got the Boss GT-1000 a few months ago. It's awesome because of all the options, but it had two drawbacks: 1) only one master reverb pedal, so I couldn't layer reverbs together, and 2) the overdrives, like Capt. Lee said, weren't perfect, except of the Boss pedals. So I ended up buying the Durple, the Russian Big Muff, Hall of Fame, and Flashback so I could layer things like I wanted. I don't think I'll get too deep into gear addiction with pedals because I don't like having things that do the same thing. I'd want each pedal to be unique.

Interesting, I have an ME-80 and a couple of Katanas (50W and Artist) and I like how the ME-80 works with them. I have a couple of extra pedals I use along with it too. Everyone has their own thing, right?
@JustSomeGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@robertpurdy4452 I like the Tone Studio editor on the Katana because it gives more options, and that's one that works with the GT-1000. You can also change the pedal order and add it to the effects loop, which was another thing I wanted to play with, but couldn't with the ME-80.

Hey Rob good clip... most of my pedal buying happened 1983-85 so I had Boss HM mk1, Flanger mk2, Stereo Phaser mk2, Octave mk1 also a Front line chorus & delay pedals and a crybaby..all good classic pedals from back in the day. Then in the 90’s it all became multi-Fx floor boards for years... now a days I keep it simple and jam night friendly with a few of the little tone city pedals on a board and it’s job done 🎸👍🏼🙂

My first pedal was a multi-effect. Digitech RP200A. Definitely gave me an idea of what effects I liked most. In my opinion, the first four pedals a guitarist should have: - A tuner, because DUH - A good drive pedal, but only if you're going for a metal tone. Distortion on your amp is great but if you're going for that super high-gain, tight boosted tone, even just a basic Tube Screamer clone of some sort will completely sort you out. - A delay pedal. The reason most of your favourite guitar solos and leads sound so EPIC is because they have delay on them and it's a natural choice for any guitarist's first pedalboard. - Controversially, a chorus pedal. Clean tones are good on their own and all, but chorused clean tones have so much more depth to them, and if you really want your clean tones to sound deep and wide... chorus pedal (or a phaser) will absolutely get you there. Looks like your choices are pretty close... you got a tuner and drive. Wah is another great choice, but I'd replace reverb with delay, because a good delay can almost sort of act like a reverb in the right settings. You get the best of both worlds.

I got my ML1 Pro Hybrid yesterday (same colourway as Chappers has here). It's amazing. Out of the box I used a strobe tuner and the most out of tune string was 2 cents off. I could literally have taken it out of the box and stepped on stage without touching it. This is a guitar with a trem bridge that was air-freighted from the UK to Seattle via a central US snowstorm. I have fixed-bridge guitars that are more out of tune after 1 day in my house. I don't know if the setup was from the factory or done by Andertons, but either way it's spot-on. I chose it over the American Ultra Deluxe strat because I preferred the body finish and lack of plate on the neck. I couldn't be happier!

The TU-2 is legendary. It was the first pedal I bought as a kid and all my friends made fun of me for spending $100+ on something that made no sounds. Funny enough, it is the only pedal I have kept since my early days and still lives on my board to this very day. 15 years, never failed me once. More perks of the TU-2: 1) Can power extra pedals with the "through" 9v power port 2) The Boss switch is silent and doesn't require pin-point accuracy when pressing on a dark stage. Very forgiving. This is a great attribute for the pedal that you will be turning on/off the most.

a couple years ago i built my first pedalboard with just an mxr 6 band eq, a wampler plexi drive, and an mxr carbon copy delay and it sounded so good and did everything i wanted for a long time! but about 3 weeks ago i decided i was finally ready for a REAL pedalboard, and went on a crazy shopping spree lol. now my current board has (in order): tuner, compressor, 6 band eq, wampler dual fusion v2, plexi drive, 10 band eq, noise gate, pitch shifter (to play 'bass' lines in the looper lol), chorus, carbon copy, then finally a boss rc5 looper! all the pedals that i didnt mention brands are donner brand for now, until i can afford to go back and replace them with brands that i really like of the same type of effect. that being said the donner brands all sound awesome! i was actually really surprised how good they sound, and the tuner has a really nice display thats super easy to read in the dark, that and the 10 band eq are the only pedals i dont plan on replacing with wampler, keely, mxr equivalents. I havent experimented yet with running a few things in the loop yet but ill definitely do that soon!

I own and use 82 pedals and I use everyone to cover my 24 tunes live. They are on two linked boards but wired to a switcher using 4 switches. On a tune I do not change just a pedal but in effect I change boards. Each of the 4 channels have in its a compressor, dirt pedals, gate, modulation fx, delay and reverb etc. The idea is to create the sound of a Post produced recording but live. It is very effective in creating very dynamic ...dare I say dramatic changes live. In a 3 piece power trio without a second guitarist or keys it makes a big difference.

I just subscribed because I've watched a least a dozen of your fun & informative YT posts and that's usually my criteria. For me: no wah pedal on the floor or whammy on my guitars - just my preference/style. Three pedals: Vintage Ibanez TS7 that I bought new (so that means I'm vintage as well) in between guitar & amp and a MXR Carbon Copy followed by DigiTech JamMan Solo in the FX loop. None of this is mounted on a pedal board.

First guitar was a Slash Epiphone (starter set with amp) so has a built in tuner so didn't need one. So i started off like this. Got a Durple & Wild Fro coz you get a power supply when you get 2 tone city pedals. Next up was a Kirk Hammet Wah, well he is notorious for it after all & a Slash octave fuzz. So there's my first 4 pedals. Then for no 5 just because i saw Chappers review one here i got a Delayrian because it looked cool AF. Now i've got other guitars a tuner is planned for the near future to replace the headstock one i've been using. Keep up these videos Chappers. For somebody like me i find then very useful.

I don't have 50 pedals...yet. *But* I _do_ have about 30 pedals. They're mostly the Ibanez Series-7 pedals with the Ton-Loc feature. They include the SM-7 Smashbox, TS-7 Tubescreamer, CF-7 Chorus/Flanger, DE-7 Delay/Echo, PD-7 Phat-Hed Bass Overdrive (basically a Tubescreamer that has extended range to handle bass frequencies)and the recently-acquired AW-7 Autowah. I also have the MT-2 Metal Zone and the TU-3 Tuner from BOSS. Behringer are represented by VD1 Vintage Distortion/Sustainer, VP1 Vintage Phaser, and 2 (two) VT999 Vintage Tube Monster. I don't use the VP1 much (I already have the CF-7, which is more compact and more useful), but the two VT999 each has a different tube in it and thus sounds/reacts differently. I use the VD1 more as a clean boost/compressor/sustainer. I have 2 (two) DigiTech JMEXTV JamMan Express XT Looper pedals that has been synced together. I use one for my main guitar and the other one for the backing instrument(s) (2 basses, ukulele or another guitar, all electrics). Oh and I very occasionally throw in an old DigiTech Grunge in front of the TS-7, as that's the only way I could get a sorta-decent sound out of it. Finally, for reverb I just use the real physical plate or spring reverb in my amps. ;) I typically use my pedals in two groups into two amps for a wet/dry setup. The drives/distortions/fuzzes into the bigger one whilest the modulation and effects goes into the other one.

Over my entire life, I have owned 138 different effects boxes, (not including the couple of rack units I've had) all that has made me realize is that regardless of which of those many boxes I've owned, I still sound like myself. Some effects have inspired me more than others, and those are the ones that stayed on my board. I find that I'm happy using a phaser, a wah, a couple of drives and a delay pedal, if I need anything out of my usual main stuff, I just dial it in on my HX Stomp. Long story short, get the pedals that inspire you to play more

Used by Rhoads ('Blizzard...' & 'Diary...') & Lifeson ('Hemispheres', 'Permanent Waves' & 'Moving Pictures') Need I say more? (No.) #3 Boss DD-8 Digital Delay. The newest Boss delay, it is truly THE Dig-it-all Delay. #4 Morley Steve Vai Bad Horsie Wah, 1st version. (I've played Vox & Dunlop wah pedals. Tube Screamer: My very first pedal was an Ibanez PD7 Phat Hed. It was a two-channel overdrive/distortion. The overdrive channel straight-up was a Tube Screamer, and the distortion channel was a cheap alternative to a RAT, which was VERY important to us teenagers who could not afford a real RAT. Anyway, the PD7 was marketed as a bass pedal, but it was great for guitar if you knew how to set the switches correctly. It faithfully served for 20 years. And then I made the mistake of selling it to buy a Matthews Effects Harbinger....Rick Matthews later sold the company, which is why I no longer associate with Mathews Effects. I VERY MUCH wish I had my PD7 back. I don't want ANOTHER PD7, because that would not be the same. I want MY PD7.... Tuner: My second pedal was the Boss TU-2. It faithfully served all the way until the WAZA TU-3 came along, which has been on my board ever since. And yes, I do have the switch set on true bypass. Anyway, I sold that TU-2 to a buddy. He later took it off his board, because it has a battery life of about AN HOUR. One of these days, let's hope he learns how to use a power supply....You really should be using a power supply anyway, because you will quickly spend that much money on batteries anyway, and changing batteries is annoying. Wah: I HATE wah. I have never liked wah, and I have no use for a wah. Reverb: Back in the late 90s, I bought one of those Arion reverbs. Back then, Arion pedals were made of cheap plastic, so the foot switch broke ON THE FIRST SONG. I immediately took it back to the shop, and demanded my money back. I didn't get another reverb for more than 20 years, until I got a Matthews Effects Astronomer, THE ORIGINAL VERSION, built by Rick Matthews himself. Nowadays, even though I no longer associate with Matthews Effects, I do still have that Astronomer on my board, because I love it so much. Shimmer reverb is my thing, and I have yet to find a shimmer reverb quite as good as that original Astronomer.

I have a simple setup for my needs. I find simplicity, at least for performances, is key. Mar 5150 overdrive, Boss DD7, and lastly my Walrus SLÖ. (Arguably the most treasured object in my possession.)

I own only boss, odb-3 cd-3 and thats it. Ok jk, i the first upgrade i got for my rig was a gt-8 and it actually contains everything you listed :). A second hand gt-8 is a good investment even today, i got a gt-pro as an upgrade, when i transitioned to playing in stereo. Using a 20w h&k + 50w vx, and a tt in the tuner out. But the thing is, all i use the processor is for the stereo capabilities, and i have the fx 1&2 set to adv compressors, with the regular compressor in there aswell, and a tube screamer od (that acts like a compressor). Those all have on off pedals, and both amps have dirt and clean channels on pedals, and the compressors are in different positions in the fx loop. So have to disagree with you on this one. A compressor is all you need for a decent tone from any amp, including the shit 15w, a tube screamer works only for tube amps. ap tuner and a laptop, wah is cool but not that useful. Delay should be done in post imho xD

Rob, what if you have a built in dual spring reverb what do you recommend for a good delay to couple with it? And does it matter where you place these in your chain of effects? I have always used multi-effects processors and while they are okay from the standpoint of convenience I find that analog effects have more dynamic character than digitally replicated effects.

Rob, you do know that, if you know someone who can use a soldering iron, you can change out that LED on the TS with one that can be seen, don't you?

I bought a Zoom G3XN and a decent little overdrive and that seems to cover everything I need

I assume at some point I'll hit a limit with this gear, but it isn't yet

I know this is about separate pedals but quick question would you put a multi FX through FX loop or the front? As can't split the delays reverb chorus and so on and just have them through FX loop

I've got a Preamp Live that I want to turn into a backup rig with the BabyBomb30. What do you think of that Rob? Maybe a some mini chorus, delay and harmonizer pedals in the loop of that and rock off.
