The Battle of Plymouth unfolded amidst the First Anglo-Dutch War on 16 August 1652, when General-at-Sea George Ayscue of the Commonwealth of England confronted Vice-Commodore Michiel de Ruyter's Dutch Republic convoy. They clashed off the coast of Sussex. Ayscue, commanding a fleet of 47 vessels, aimed to intercept the convoy, but De Ruyter, leading 31 ships, skillfully maneuvered, forcing Ayscue's avoidance.

I completely agree with you on that because like without the Anglo Dutch wars there wouldn’t have been great Admirals like Michiel de Ruyter and also without the Anglo Dutch wars the area of the United States where I live wouldn’t have been under English control but instead Dutch and the area of the United States that I live in at the time of the Anglo Dutch wars was called New Netherland and just saying but I can’t wait to see videos on the 4th Anglo Dutch war since I know nothing about it.

nobody seem to mention it, but this 8:07 is a critical moment of the battle, in a way that De Ruyter's Flagship managed to get behind Ayscue's Flagship, where De Ruyter can launch devastating attack on the stern(back) of Ayscue's, which is not only a huge target with important "assets"(pun intended. Sorry, not sorry) on it(chamber of captain is there), the cannonballs can pierce through the length of the ship, damaging anything it passes through the stern to the bow(front). not to mention De Ruyter can shoot the stern of the ships on the other side.

Naval warfare is an undercovered aspect of military history. I'm happy for my Dutch neighbours that you chose their national hero, admiraal Michiel de Ruyter. I'm not sure if you've ever seen the movie about him, Admiral (in English). Worth a watch!
@Thomas_Name
@Thomas_Name 6 ай бұрын
I saw the movie. Was a lot of self-importance and melodrama tbh. Seems like they poured a lot of money into it but it mainly served as nationalist propaganda rather than be an interesting account on De Ruyter or the anglo-dutch wars. I learned more from this 10 min video than I did from the movie. Great job, house of history.

@@Thomas_Name is it any different from other movies about 'national heroes'? I was wondering but can you do a series on the northern wars and I am asking because while the great northern war gets the most attention the wars that happened before it are still interesting as these wars show how Sweden became an empire by acquiring what is today part of the nations of Estonia 🇪🇪 and Latvia 🇱🇻 and it also saw the Dutch expand their territory in North America by gaining what the Swedish called new Sweden which comprised of the modern us states of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and expanded their influence up to the states of New York and Connecticut and link up with their territory up the Hudson River at fort Nassau and the wars also saw the duchy of Prussia become a sovereign state and the cession of most of Swedish Pomerania east of the Oder River to the nation of Brandenburg Prussia and lastly the northern wars would see the end of the Swedish empire.

The good Machiaveliian whose methods (he never forgot the risks of war) were indeed excused by the results. His later warnings about the dangers of wars getting out of hand and the need for German Russian raprochement were tragically ignored (see WW I) by the rather stupid Kaiser Wilhelm II.

We lost most sea battles against the Brits (they just had more and bigger war ships, while we focused on trade), but they will never forget the Raid on the Medway, it’s still their worst loss. It’s also the real birth of the Marines, till then they were fighting on the ships, but now they were used as a landing party and did an awesome job.

Not true, the first war was a draw, the second a resounding Dutch victory (Medway!), the third a tactical draw but strategic Dutch win, as an invasion was averted. Only the fourth, much later, was en English victory and sealed the succession of the Dutch by the English as most powerful naval power in Europe.

@@martijnb5887 The first was an english win. Second was a dutch win but only because england went bankrupt because of the natural disasters like the great fire of london 1666, and great plague of 1667. The following financial constraints meant that there wasnt enough money to put the fleet to sea and as a result were attacked while in their docks by the Dutch. And the 3rd counts as a draw because england switched sides and declared war on france. And 4th as you already know a crushing english victory

You seem to do this in multiple of your videos and I don't understand why. It is so incredibly unnecessary and it makes a mockery of the people who's names you refuse to pronounce correctly. I would understand and totally accept it if you were not from The Netherlands. But as you are Dutch, please stop saying the Dutch names with some made up English pronunciation.
