Fascinating! Hope you do one on De Ruyter's famous Raid on the Medway in 1667, a daring Dutch attack on England's main naval base that really turned the tables.

Nice to see Lowestoft (easternmost town in the British Isles and home to the legendary Daryl Sutch - in your face, Land's End!) getting a shout out. While the nearby Battle of Sole Bay is commemorated in beer form by Adnam's of Southwold, I had not heard of the Battle of Lowestoft despite growing up in the area. Thank you for covering this less well-known conflict.

Supposedly the English landed sailors on Nordnes (where I grew up) to storm the cannot positions there but were driven back. The Nordness cannon battery was still made ineffective for a while because of damage from the ship cannons. Shortly after this battle a new cannon position was built in the same place with greater elevation and bastion structure. This is the current Frederiksberg fort in Bergen, less impressive than Bergenhus Fortress on the opposite side but still practical for military purpose. It never saw battle.

6:23 the idea of firing on another nations ships due to the impoliteness of their sailors is mind boggling; it really shows how high the stakes are nowadays and the tech we have. Not sure what those British sailors did but I would say flying your j-20 fighter within 40 ft of another nations b-52 that is flying in international waters is pretty impolite.

They mostly used roundshot which is basically an iron ball. It breaks wood, sometimes bounces off and sometimes flies though, but for the most part it's all above the water line. You can't fire a roundshot below the water line where it would actually contribute to sinking the ship.

I think your animation is upside down if the English ships “ shifted guns to port”. Port is to the left. I think you mean starboard. And it would have been the Dutch who would have aimed their guns to port.

This is why I loved TW Empire so much because the naval battles were SO EPIC!! And the sheer size of the campaign map made it feel more realistic and gave you more options and opportunities to expand…. Really hoping for another empire game in the future even tho CA is just gonna keep dropping literal 💩 like pharaoh, and Troy. Three kingdoms also wasn’t even a historical, and the warhammer series just needs to be laid to rest at this point and need to focus on their more core-veteran players and their concerns with the series
