I think my favorite lesser known artists are Edmonia Lewis and William H. Johnson. Johnson is from my hometown but I didn't learn about him until I became an art teacher. Now his work is starting to be more widely taught in and outside of SC. I like his work because of how he portrays Darlington and Florence, SC. He lived there about 100 years before I did, but I recognize the rural landscapes and people in his paintings. It feels like home. I learned about Lewis last year. What is known about her life story is fascinating.

So glad I stumbled upon this video after watching HBO's In the Absence of Light! They mentioned Johnson briefly and left me wanting to know more.

80 paintings attributed to him (Joshua Johnson) what a great feat, considering the prevalent circumstances associated with African American Artist at that era.

thank you for the great video 😍one of my favourite lesser known photographers is David Uzochukwu! I know this isn't the point, but I just wanted to nerd out about 1:55 - it's so cool to hear the word Lymner in this context. It means 'artist' in the cornish language, which went virtually extinct for 200 years before its revival in the 20th century. I think the anglicised version 'limner' comes from the illumination of manuscripts.

We have a portrait by Johnson in our current exhibit at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, NY. What's interesting about the painting "Portrait of a Woman" is that it is hung next to a portrait by James Abbott McNeill Whistler. It was curated this way by the owner of both paintings, Hong Gyu Shin, a 32 year old Korean Art collector and gallerist. His aim is to draw attention to lesser known artists and to show that lesser known does not necessarily mean lesser quality, thus the juxtapositions throughout the current show: "The Shin Collection: Eye and Mind". The exhibit is up til July 9, 2023.

My favorite lesser known artist is probably Edward Okun. He was a polish artist in the Art Nouveau movement, and his stuff is beautiful. He mixes realistic humans on flat planes with ornamental backgrounds, very nice.

Does anyone have a picture of Joshua Johnson?

Sadly, I don't believe there are any images of Joshua Johnson himself. I did a lot of research on him when I had one of his portraits, and never saw an image of the painter himself. But, his work recently broke a world record at Christie's. One of his portraits went at auction for $1,134,000.00 from January 19, 2024. I can't imagine he would know how much impact he would have over 200 years later!
