One detail that can be missed from his intro cutscene: While Godfrey holds Morgott's body and it fades, it turns into a grace...pointing towards you. WE are his last challenge before Marika, as HE is our last challenge. Also, love how he ends his transformation with a crazed version of how Nepheli calls herself: "WARRIOR!" Further edit: Radagon's boss theme is the best in the game.

That seems like more than just a cool little detail to me. The plot of Elden Ring is straight forward but also has a lot of mysteries and twists. The whole game you're being guided by a god and its messenger, but then when you get to your goal of the Erdtree, you're locked out. The mission isn't going according to plan, and the Fingers are confused what the hell is going on and are now busy trying to contact your God for the duration of the (base?) game's story. And now your God can be found pitting someone else against you.

Grace is controlled by Queen Marika. And Queen Marika wants you, the Tarnished to do this. It was her plan all along. First take Grace away from Godfrey and his warriors, drive them out of the Lands Between, have them fight battles out there to get stronger, until they die. Then give Grace back to them, resurrecting them, and call them back into the Lands Between. All so they can get strong enough to free her, from how I understood it. She doesn't want the position anymore, and she wants the Golden Order gone (at least in its current form, with the Greater Will in control). It seems she also sent Melina, probably so that you can burn the Erdtree? I don't know if she knew that the path would be sealed, but maybe she expected something like that, or she just wants the Erdtree to burn anyway? the motivations of Marika and Radagon are still somewhat muddy to me.. She is also responsible for the shattering of the Elden Ring of course (while Radagon tried to repair the Ring), and was seemingly also behind the Knight of the Black Knives (with Ranni). That's what her betrayal of Maliketh was - first taking the Rune of Death from the Elden Ring and giving it to him, ultimately so that it (a fragment) can be stolen and used to trigger the Shattering War. Oh, and she tasked Hewg with creating a weapon capable of slaying a god, of course. The Elden Beast, representative of the Greater Will in this world (and basically the Golden Order manifest).

It's ironically basically _too_ unique. That makes it so obvious and jarring when it shows up so much. :D And that they so often just pop out of the ground nonchalantly, especially in places that are already mean (like the Sanctum of Rot and the Rot pool in the Haligtree) makes people's reaction to them appearing even more negative, I think. You never know when they will appear, it's so random. Unlike e.g. the Erdtree avatars - you're expecting those. If they had just added a little more variation instead of just a single variant that's the exact same except it causes Scarlet Rot, it might have been fine. Just have them have a bunch of different elements, a more different look, and give each one at least one unique move and/or second phase transition... kind of similar to the (non-ancient) dragons. You have a cool rotten dragon, a dragon that swings a magic sword at you, a dragon that spits magic stuff and blue fire, an ice dragon that appears in a blizzard... imagine that for the Tree Spirits and it _might_ have been enough for people to be less annoyed at them?

I feel sorry for Godrick, even though he was a monster. When he says "Great Godfrey, did'st thou withness?!" when he kills you during the fight (phase 2). He's looking up so much to Godfrey (also has the giant painting of him in his dining hall of course) and he's so proud of what little strength he gained. But if Godfrey was there, he would just be very disappointed most likely, and Godrick would be crushed.

Say what you want about Godrick but he has two things on his side: He admires his ancestor so much that he wishes to be strong to basically gain acceptance which we can relate too and it's very sad and he's doing it by crushing tarnished the one threat to every DemiGod and he's one of the only ones to do it intelligently. Rykard was the only other one but he took tarnished into his fold to fight usually established and powerful Tarnished to hopefully eat the powered up tarnished he sports. It's a good way to die. The other demigods are basically dicking around. Godricks like "fuck that shit". He's stationed at the start of your journey before you can grow too strong and he finishes you early. He nips the bud before it can bloom.

I find the situation with Serosh and Godfrey to be kinda sad. Serosh was attached to Godfrey in order to keep him from going too savage and force him to assume a "regal countenance befitting a lord." One would assume that they probably became friends. However, the MOMENT Serosh let's go of Godfrey in order to protect him he broke his neck without a moments hesitation.

the theory goes that serosh is a shadowbound beast, like maliketh or blaidd, because the greater will seems to enforce its rules and order by creating shadow beasts that are perfectly loyal until the second you slip up. which means that, had serosh stepped off godfrey's back, godfrey would have broken his oath to act as a lord and returned to hoarah loux, meaning serosh would have turned into a baleful shadow and moved to kill godfrey for disobedience towards the greater will. serosh is kinda in between a rock and a hard place here, he has to defend his master, but his master doesn't need defence and if he moves to defend his master, his master has to kill him or he turns into a murderous demon.

​@@Yal_Rathol Something cool about this theory that I put together today is that, counting Serosh as one, each shadowbound beast becomes a different form of metaphorical shadow. Blaidd being Ranni's shadow in the form of a figure watching over her back since childhood, Maliketh being Marika's shadow in the sense of this noble figure being betrayed and locked away by the queen, and Serosh being Godfrey's shadow in the sense of a literal constant presence at his back, never apart from him. Out of all of them, I would say Godfrey has the most respect for his shadowbound beast, as it's what allows him to truly carry what the Greater Will asks of him. He literally takes his beast onto himself to quell his warrior spirit and play the role he feels he must act; Blaidd and Maliketh are both inevitably seen as what they are by their respective partners, tools of the Greater Will. Since Godfrey isn't trying to actively overthrow the Greater Will (and was likely cast out by Marika because of this adherence), he carries Serosh with pride. Godfrey sends him off only at the point where he feels he needs his Badlands strength to serve the Greater Will, beyond what his shadow will allow.

Huh. Interesting. In Phase 1, Godfrey... fights a lot like a Crucible Knight. Same stomps, similar movements with his big axe - no shield, no, but otherwise you can see the similarities. And that makes sense, because the Crucible Knights explicitly according to their armour served Godfrey. That's cool. It's just like like Lorian in DS3 has a bunch of moves which are boss-ised versions of what the Lothric Knights use.

I feel like Woolie would have absolutely no problem with the Tree Spirits if the game hadn't first presented one as a boss with a health bar. It puts the feeling in your head that it's supposed to be a special encounter when it's actually just a regular enemy. Frankly, the game does this with a LOT of enemies by giving them boss health bars when there's absolutely no reason for it.

Man that model switch between Marika & Radagon is so smartly done, hiding it by making her crash into the "anvil" the hammer is stuck in & having the hair color changing the only thing we see on screen while still making it clear this is the same person only changed. Also having the Elden Beast/ring already leaking out of their hollowed, cracked body but only for Radagon while Marika was unresponsive & lifeless. Having Radagon charge some attacks via the piece of the ring that bound Marika in the first place, I'm guessing the red spear has something to do with him as well. He's the one sealing Marika in there, he's the one who is the vessel for the cracked Elden Ring now. Two people but also the same, serving the same purpose. And then their body becomes the literal sword wielded by the beast, two spines twisting around each other. Some real excellent imagery in that fight.

the elden beast has a move woolie didn't see, the rasengan it does is a grab. when it grabs you, it crucifies you on the ring, like marika, and then stabs you with spears of light from every direction. the red spear is implied to be one left over from when the beast was "disciplining" marika for shattering the ring.

My favorite part of the three tree spirits there was not fighting them, solid snaking my way to the talisman, and fucking leaving. Its like the hydra. No point fighting it, more will just appear somehow. At least this way they will live forever in embarrassment, knowing they got robbed by a man in a cardboard box. I've actually wondered ever since I first saw the two if Serosh's attachment to Godfrey's back is actually perhaps the original intent of grafting. A method for powerful warriors to install limiters on their strength so they don't just wreck ass and break shit, that slowly got bastardized over time into a method for gaining power as we see it in game. Idk, it just seems weird that grafting would be introduced as a concept, and that Godfrey would literally have what we know is another separate being grafted onto him, and those two things wouldn't be connected somehow

Yeah the implication is that the dregs of the golden lineage tried to copy him and started grafting . But maybe didn’t understand that serosh was holding him back, instead thinking that it was a power up. Hence why godrick and godefroy thought dragon arms would be the ultimate power up.

The Elden Beast reminds me of the Hallucigenia. Which keeps popping up shockingly often in my media consumption lol. It comes from a place in Canada, iirc, that is nicknamed "The Origin of Life" because of the thousands of unique lifeform fossils that have been found there. Also The Ulcerated Tree Spirits, i think, are the corrupted malformed children of the Elden Beast.

I think that much like how Deathroot is expelled Death-stuff, the Ulcerated Tree Spirits are the Erdtree's way of expelling contaminants out of its system. This way, it's not dependant upon the Elden Beast's existence or link to The Big Erdtree, so any Erdtree can potentially generate one, much like it does Avatars. Also explains why they're diseased and afflicted with all kinds of shit.

there it is, my favorite boss in the entire game. Hoarah Loux is a fighting game character through and through. The grapples, the leg drops, the shockwaves, the launcher into air grab, you wouldn't have to change anything. He's so fun to fight I always insist on fighting him alone. The only criticism I have is that... he's too easy! One of the few times I wish a boss had MORE health. Thank god someone tipped woolie off about his grapples, otherwise he would have steamrolled this boss.

The reason why is probably the same as Ranni's, which is why there's tons of evidence to suggest that Marika aided and abetted Ranni's plot, and even tweaked it to punish her dragonfucker son (as you do when you're a Dark Souls origin deity) instead of Radahn, whom Ranni had WAAAAAAAY more motive to kill than any other demigod considering he's an outright traitor to the mother she loved dearly.

Gigachad Godfrey is far and away my favorite boss in the game. He's the perfect embodiment of a challenge, but a fair one, a true fucking fight between warriors. The powerbombing is just icing. 1:22:46 I interpreted Godfrey's loss of grace as the Greater Will tossing him aside like trash once he served his use. This is one of my favorite recurring concepts in the game, if I had to put it into words the theme would be something like "the unsanctified nature of authority". The Golden Order is the prevailing authority in the Lands Between, not because the Order is more righteous or just than the opposition but because the Greater Will is willing to compromise any belief in order to further its agenda. Everything and everyone is merely a tool that the Greater Will can use to take power, nothing is sacred not even the original Elden Lord.

I always wonder if Radagons design is a reference to the Manga/ Anime Record of Ragnarok because the design of Thor is similar to Radagons. And the Elden Beast looks like the Laniakea Supercluster, if you compare the real picture with the Beast, you can see similarities. The Laniakea Supercluster is a gigantic structure of galaxy groups that contains more dann 100 000 galaxies and is more than 500 million lightyears in diameter. Our galaxy is part of the Laniakea Supercluster.

I remember the first time I saw someone fight Hoarah Loux... My cousin was playing at the time and he was way ahead of my playthrough, so Godfrey kicked his ass for a good... 5 or 6 runs, but then he FINALLY managed to dodge well enough to make it to Hoarah Loux with a DEVASTATING critical with some bigass weapon he had at the time that chunked down like a third of Godfrey's health bar right before he transitioned. Then Godfrey went to Phase 2 and we both freaked out because this was the first we saw of Phase 2 and my cousin was nearly dead and out of heals, and in a panic my cousin overcommitted to a heavy attack as Hoarah Loux came charging in, and we both thought it was the end. Then, SOMEHOW, he managed to bonk Hoarah Loux to death in one move before he could grab him. We stood there, slack-jawed, for a good 10 seconds, and then we died laughing for 5 minutes straight, tears in our eyes, because we both fell into the hype of seeing Hoarah Loux going all-out with his bare-hands and thought this was going to be the hardest battle yet, only to see the most anti-climactic and disrespectful boss kill I have ever witnessed in all my life. Thankfully Malenia had long since beaten the hubris out of both of us, the Elden Beast was VERY rough on us both, and on every subsequent playthrough we both did Hoarah Loux had his time to shine and rock our socks off with his sick sumo grappling style, but dear GOD was that shit hilarious at the time...
