The thing I like is that despite using different methods, Ranni and Goldmask ultimately are working towards the same goal in the end: a world where the Gods can no longer fuck with us with impunity. With Ranni she is simply sealing them away from us, with Goldmask he is binding them so that they have to play by the same rules we do.

They're not the same though, Goldmask's solution is to remove the Gods from the equation because they're essentially just normal people who do normal asshole shit for illogical reasons. My actual favorite thing about the cutscene for Godfrey is the first thing he says: "It's been...a long while, Morgott." He isn't even facing us, the greatest threat to the Golden Order, he's cradling the withered corpse of his son. The son you murdered, a cursed, miserable child who loathed himself as much as the world around him did. It's a small, beautiful moment where we see Godfrey not as a king. Not as a champion, not the warrior Horah Loux. We first see him first as a father, quietly mourning over his lost child. From has progressed amazingly with humanizing their enemies and making you, the player, feel like the real monster of the story.

The number of people who seemingly talk over or just entirely miss this moment is so saddening. It's such a humanizing moment and to my recollection is like the only tender moment we see between the demi-gods in the entire game.

Now imagine if all characters had this level of intimate detail, and actually interacted with each other in natural conversations, instead of just making some random tarnished jackass play telephone and run messages to NPC's that are literally two rooms apart from each other. That would be pretty cool. Seeing NPC's have a mutual conversation with eachother instead of just dull one sided monologues directed at the PC. Too bad modern game design just isn't ready for such groundbreaking innovation.

There is an explanation for Marika and Radagon being the same entity - The Golden Order places a strong emphasis on the idea of becoming a greater whole by removing differences (which is why they hate Those Who Live In Death and other groups so much, because they're different). This is explained in the game as the Law of Regression and the idea of regressing to the mean, so basically Radagon and Marika became one as a part of the ideal to become one larger whole. It also has a lot to do with alchemy and gnosticism. I think Last Protagonist has a good video on it.

Do people just forget about D when talking about Marika and Radagon? There is already a precedence for their situation. D and his brother have two separate body's and are their own person, but have one soul shared between them. D's item descriptions even talk about how the Golden Order accepted them even with their supposed deviance. Because of course it would, Marika and Radagon are the same way. Brother and sister, two body's and personalities, one soul. And after Marika shatters the Elden Ring she and Radagon are forced into a single body by the Elden Beast as part of her punishment. Honestly the Elden Beast probably was hoping that Radagon would just take full control over the body considering how devoted he was to the Golden Order.
@31Moth13
@31Moth13 2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with the "fused together as punishment" theory. If you go back to the very first trailer ever released for Elden Ring with the content of the final game, you can see Marika and Radagon repeatedly switching between personas as they try to break/fix the Elden Ring. Personally I believe they were always one body because of that one mask description that goes: "the servants were absolutely not allowed to talk about what was going on with Rennala and Radagon's marriage"
@PregnantAdamSandler
@PregnantAdamSandler 2 жыл бұрын
@@31Moth13 I feel like it should be noted that Liurnia was always described as somewhat cut-throat with there even being tensions and eventual civil war between the academy and the royal family. It's not necessarily odd that Radagon would take this step considering that the union itself is between Rennala, an incredibly important figure to both the Caria royals and the academy, and Radagon who is of Leyndel. It serves as a symbolic sign of secrecy as well as the basic power play of "I'm not from here but that doesn't mean you can talk shit about me."

@Broomer52

It sounds like this world and especially The Lands Between are suffering from a little thing called “Manifest Destiny” a bunch of Gods are coming down destroying previous cultures and replacing it with their own. Like Grafting the Erd Tree to be the center of The Lands, all those previous methods of Death just out of the business, lost and confused because The Greater Wills children replaced them. By the time the game starts some people are realizing what happened and says “This shit is unfair! Look how ruined everything is by forcing all of this on this land” and some say they “we should just leave” while others say “This is messed up but it can be corrected and reworked” then theirs some who say to stay the course or to just destroy everything that way everyone is equally fucked.

@joekewl7539 2 жыл бұрын
My interpretation is that the other lands have their own issues, but the Lands Between is the biggest and craziest. Sure, the Land of Reeds is having their Sengoku period. A civil war to determine who rules the whole place. But that feels almost pedestrian compared to the Lands Between where *God Left.* Where did God go? WE DON'T KNOW! Who will rule as the divine now? GOOD QUESTION!
@GaijinEncarmine
@GaijinEncarmine 2 жыл бұрын
Is there even anything to suggest that the Lands Between are just the game world, rather than a name for the world as a whole? I appreciate Woolie taking the extra time to put respect on Godfrey's name. But I think between not understanding the sword monument describing him, as Margit, killing the would-be heroes wanting to conquer Leyndell and the fact that bleed + frost fists melt healthbars, I don't think he had the chance to fully appreciate what an absolute baller Morgott was. He also missed out Morgott MAX-ACTing his sword. And of course, Godfrey himself mourning his son after presumably not seeing him since his banishment. Morgott, being a graceless omen, is finally given some peace dying in his father's arms with his omen horns gone and actually fading away into grace. And then said grace directs Godfrey to the player.

Correct me if im wrong, but I thought this was something the Souls community liked about the series. The lack of any hand holding. The world is setup in a way where you're given just enough information to get the gist of things and enough leeway to make your own interpretations or conclusions with certain characters and events. That's what analytics tend to bring up in their DS retrospectives at least from my experience on the internet.

@@leithaziz2716 i always found this a dumb reason. when you want to tell a story, tell it. even when you hide it and have the people search for it, at least tell the whole story. Not giving the full picture leads to people interpreting thier own things in it. the souls community is passionate, but also toxic af, because they constantly argue about the story of the game and because they have to interpret things in it, they tend to think better of themselfes. It's like those people who interpret the hidden meanings behind some pictures like the Mona Lisa and think they are better than everyone else. The worst thing about the games is the community and i think a big part of that is that vague nature of their story telling. Sometimes i do wonder, if the game series would actually be as popular with a complete story, or if it really did need people like that to keep being relevant. I mean the mechanics and gameplay was always great. The vague story that most people didn't even notice should have not made that much of an impact on the longlivety and popularity of the game.

It's also entirely possible that the last time they finished a game together and Pat said they'd find a new one to play together soon only to have Woolie awkwardly backpedal that statement and give a vague "we'll see what happens" then never play a game together again meant he really enjoyed playing games with Pat and is just chomping at the bit to do it again. @@Ultimaniacx4 For someone criticizing someone else for being condescending you should use that self identified common sense and try not to be so much yourself. Another thing someone with common sense should understand is crap talking with friends. Insults, laughing at each others expense, banter exists you know. And much of that "backseating" helped Woolie along and learn how to play better at times. You talk like you've never been in a group of friends before and have walked on egg shells all your life here. Fact of the matter is you don't know them, they started making videos together for a reason originally. if he hated playing games with him SBF would of likely never started to begin with. Could that of changed? Absolutely. However there are also many other possible reasons. For example scheduling, Pat plays far differently then Woolie, look at his sessions lengths vs Wooles, they're pretty stark. What game to play is another. Finding time with three people if he wants to do the game with Reggie also is another. The fact Woolie still has this podcast with Pat means he doesn't dislike his personality and antics that much. But to answer your question, what do you know? Precious little about the subject, and common sense generally implores one to not make assumptions on ideas not well known to them. Like streamers private lives. Let alone being petty towards others when talking about it for disagreeing over said, at best, assumption.

The great thing about From's narrative structure in these games is that the gaps hide things that weren't fully fleshed out in the world. I keep thinking whether or not the dragons, the Tree of the Crucible, and the Lord of the Storm are all part of the same faction/era. But chances are the Devs don't know either. Then there's things like Marika who you hardly learn anything about. All you know is that she's a Numen and she broke the Elden Ring and planned ahead for it. But there's nothing to indicate why she would bring down her own kingdom, even if she was bound to the Greater Will.

TBH I feel like the Radagon/Marika duality can be pretty easily understood if you thought of it as being similar to the concept of Ardhanarishvara in Hinduism, or Syzygies in Gnosticism - they CAN be their own individual entities separate from one another, but can also exist as a singular being.

It sounds to me that this world and especially The Lands Between are suffering from a little thing called “Manifest Destiny” a bunch of Gods are coming down destroying previous cultures and replacing it with their own. Like Grafting the Erd Tree to be the center of The Lands, all those previous methods of Death just out of the business, lost and confused because The Greater Wills children replaced them, destroying the Dragons culture and leaving their Holy Land a shattered mess that occasionally rains it’s broken shards on the Land.

I think Radagon is the first time that Fromsoft has every really worked to hype up a boss fight like its a proper finale, like its a real "theme music starts playing in the climax of the fight" moment despite the fact that usually means the fight is over via plot armor and Radagon is very much not a pushover. I believe what Pat said about Sekiro vs Elden Ring in terms of design philosophy is actually the stated idea behind them. Elden ring is them trying to create a natural conclusion to the RPG side of Fromsoft rpgs, with the exploration, move expression, enemy variety, and story. Sekiro is the natural conclusion of the action side of things, a very straightforward narrative path, limited upgrade system, but a very fine tuned combat system. It's like a further dissection of the formula from what Bloodborne was doing, and that made it absolutely fantastic to play, but somewhat difficult to innovate on in any context that isn't another Sekiro.

So, I have... one problem with all of this, and it largely boils down to this: Woolie: "I introduced Lutheranism to the world." What actually happened: Introduced Metaphysically Required Hardcore Dominion Theology to the World. Because that's what the Perfect Golden Order is. It's the Golden Order, except there are no tarnished to stop it from being a problem. There is no plan to deal with the space parasite and their pyramid scheme. There is no room for dissent or fighting fate, and the Greater Will has won permanently, because you've mended the Elden Ring. The Elden Ring IS the Elden Beast, and in doing so you've... basically put everything on a slow roll to ruin even harder than present Elden Ring. Gold Mask is cool, but his ending is a really bad outcome that Woolie has completely inverted the reading of, because Gold Mask doesn't know about the Elden Beast. He doesn't know about the space parasite, he doesn't know about any of the wacked out insanity that's going on behind the gods. Gold Mask is operating off of incomplete information, and his rune inadvertently ruins everything. His ending writes the elden beast and greater will, this horrific parasite that does awful things to the lands in between and the people in it and ruins everyone's lives, into a fundamental aspect of reality without any way to get rid of it.

@Graysett 2 жыл бұрын
Someone else who understands. I fell for it the same way Woolie did, right up until literally last 10 minutes of my playthrough where I actually sat there and thought about what all the endings I had available ACTUALLY did. Goldmask is great. He's got lots of good points in his view and understanding of the world, I'm down with Goldmask. But I'm absolutely 100% NOT down with Goldmask's final conclusion. To use a metaphor, he's doing a big math calculation, and I agree with all the numbers he's getting and moving around, but when he's done and shows me the finished proof I DESPISE the answer he came up with even though the numbers all add up. And so, the only reason I didn't go with Goldmask's ending is because at the literal last moment I realized that what it actually means is complete and utter submission to the Greater Will for EVERYONE, period, no escape, and that's not a great proposition considering the state of things back when the empire was at its peak. (I still can't believe I went from dumping on Fia all game for being a necrophiliac (and making me age years waiting for her hug animations to end) to realizing that her ending is the only ending that I felt comfortable actually implementing. What a turn around.)
@Stareostar
@Stareostar 2 жыл бұрын
I think both your and Woolie's interpretation of whatever the Perfect Order is are valid, since it's unclear what mending the Elden Ring actually means in the end. Does it unkill the Elden Beast you just killed? Un-burn the erdtree? Blow all the ash away from Leyndell? It restores Marika, I think, and doing so injects whatever you want, be it death or the fell curse or goldmask's corrections, or just nothing (?) if you don't have any mending runes, but even if the ring being mended is a 'return to status quo' so to speak, there are still definite changes to the world from your adventure. Some of the demigods are still alive after you beat them, like Rennala, but others are questionably fucked up like Godrick and Morgott, or definitely dead like Rykard and Radahn--don't forget that you also defeated Maliketh and in doing so unbound the rune of death, so the nature of death is definitely changed. I think goldmask's perfect order tries to enforce and restore the only status quo that he, and many denizens of the world, have ever known, which has debatably good and bad aspects.

As far as I can see it, the Greater will is no more a parasite than the other outer gods. The old Crucible may or may not have been another relic of a different outer god (this is a translation topic); what matters is the Greater will won and life has adapted to the Greater Will's Laws and philosophy. If it was a different outer god, like say the scarlet rot, then life adapts to the will of the top dog outer god and life goes on. Yes, it would look horrifying, but that's because WE are greater will lifeforms - we would see the influences of the other forces as horrifying but are completely natural to the creatures they sire. Ultimately, unless DLC clarifies the situation (unlikely), the Greater Will is largely benevolent: civilization is fine and progressing, souls are reincarnated in time, etc. If there are any downsides besides the oppressed races (who likely creatures born of different god), we don't see it. Remember, the outer gods are fighting each other likely because they are natural forces, always in conflict, and Marika rebelled for personal reasons not because her boss is a Doomsday Threat or anything like that.

@@Graysett Fia's ending just means Those who live in Death are part now part of the Golden Order and the Natural Cycle of Life in the Lands Between. @@fellicojelisarrivera8434 Obviously, but if Marika rebelled once then it could be done again in the future even under Fia's ending. What sets Elden Ring apart from the rest of the souls games is that you're not treated like some nobody. In Dark Souls, the fact that you have the potential to do the thing is pure coincidence and you are a one in a million undead nothing. In Bloodborne it's much the same as the Moon Presence is just looking for a pawn to off another Great One rival. Demon Souls you just happened to be the one of many in the Nexus who has the balls to fuck up Allant. In Elden Ring you truly are treated like something special after a certain point. Once you beat Morgott and Melina crafts the plot to burn the Erdtree you stop becoming "just another Tarnished fumbling through to the end" you become a genuine threat to the rigged game the Elden Beast crafted. The NPCs and even the bosses treat you like something of note and it culminates in the final stretch when Gideon and Godfrey commend your efforts. And on top of it all: an actual good ending.

I think ER has the most convoluted story, it's true that the other souls games don't answer many questions but their basic premise is pretty simple. Elden Rings has gods, outer gods, demigods, aliens, dynasties, various races, multiple factions, and several npcs with their own quests; also being an open world means that players can stumble upon people and places in a more random order compared to the relative linearity of other souls games.

Melina's mother could be Bernahl's maiden. Bernahl's set said she cast herself into the flames and Melina did say her mother was "burned and bodiless."

Melina says that she herself is burned and bodyless, not her mother.

@@rabid569 Whoops forgot about that. When she said that I assumed her mother was also on fire. Then you can argue Marika is making maidens set themselves ablaze to make Melina.

Its both cool and irritating that an important story reveal is locked behind using a high level miracle in a specific area.

So does anyone have an idea where would the DLC area happen or who would be the quest giver? There maybe two areas is either before light the flame or Ash Capital

I feel like the Eternal Cities are easy enough to put something into, or Deeproot Depths; properly out of the way given FROM's history of things, but it's also not like we have an Amygdala that grabs you and does nothing like Bloodborne.

If you guys want a good fromsoft lore video alternative that wasn't mentioned here, definitely check out Hankshaw and their video on the perfumers since I think it's one of the best elden ring lore videos out there
