Let's be real; most parents would prefer their 10 year old in a helmet also. That's a huge medical bill risk without a helmet. Plus you love your kids and don't want them hurt. Such a douche move for Joey to feel like he has to take off the helmet.
@mclarensaleenf79 ай бұрын
And Joey just laughed about it, didn’t learn anything from the experience. Absolutely hate that psychopath. He’s never skated a spot nearly that big, he literally only did manuals so he can’t even comprehend the danger. Man with a child’s brain. Skating seriously needs to chill about helmets, wear them if you feel like it and don’t shame anyone for wearing one or else they may end up as braindead as old Joey here.
I found this kid skating a fairly quiet skatepark near where I live. About 8 miles outside of Liverpool England. This kid, about 14 yo, was at a talent level I had only seen 3 times in skating nearly 20 years. They were Geoff Rowley, Brian Sumner (birdhouse, adio), and Tom Penny. These were skaters I saw as young gifted raw talents. Obviously 2 were from my city. That's how much I rated him. This was about 2010. I remember speaking to him, and expected him to say he was on flow or sponsored. I had been out the scene a few years and had barely skated from a "career"ending injury. I had connections to UK skate mags so had seen talent. The kid told me he had never been to city of Liverpool. Said his parents were quite strict and didn't like the skating much. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I thought he was kidding me. But I had genuinely stumbled on what I believed to be top pro standard skater in a random small town skatepark. I have to admit I was freaking out a little. He looked the part, but was a bit naive being 14. Including, he didn't fully appreciate how good he was. Now what I really wanted to do, was take him to the skate shop in Liverpool to introduce him to great guy who owned it, and others, to take them under their wing so to speak. But I was recovering from mental health issues and was recovering from addiction issues. I would have to speak to his parents. Get permission. I would feel responsible for the kid. I was In my early 30s by then, so I had reservations about it. But i felt people had to see this talent. I decided to wait and see if I could see him at the skatepark. Maybe get my old friends from the skate shop to come over to see him. I saw him 3 more times at the park. Then never saw him again. I kick myself a bit I wasn't more proactive. He did hard tricks in a difficult skatepark and hardly ever fell off. Only matched at 14, by those I mentioned. I did tell him, if he could to go to the skateshop and ask for certain people who could look after him. He was called Joe, and just disappeared. It's crazy to think, that the kid probably never realised just how different his life may have been. I'm certain he could of got to the top. Like I was with the 3 guys I saw growing up skating. Mainly the 2 from Liverpool.

I think it's dumb Joey made him take off his helmet. He's a kid who needs his noggin for his future. Let him make the decision of taking off his helmet himself--don't push the kid into it. That seems wrong to me. I think it should be the norm that we see kids skating with their helmets, and if they get older and they decide they don't need the helmet anymore let them make that decision. I think the peer pressure to take off a helmet is straight up immoral if the person is below 16 years old; they are too susceptible to suggestions and messing up the head can have real consequences.

While I agree I also understand that Joey represents the older generation of skaters where it’s just part of skating to outgrow your helmet and take your career to the next step. I remember Andy Anderson talking about the non stop pressure he had to take off his helmet, and he stayed true to his beliefs and kept it. I think he’ll be the major player in changing how helmets are looked at in the future. But I also know the “old heads” in skating will never like a helmet in a gnarly pic, clip, etc

Gtfoh with that old generation skater mentality. Dude is a psycho for this and skating needs to chill about helmets. Wear them if you want and don’t shame anyone for it. If I were that kid or his parents, I’d stay away from child brained Joey. Dude never hit a spot that big in his life so I don’t think he comprehends how dangerous it can be. Absolutely cunt for just laughing the whole thing off and not learning any lesson.

Julian is so sick. I hope he keeps better people around than Joey though. Pressuring a kid to take off their helmet is so dumb and reckless. I get that the older gen talks shit about riders that wear helmets but they need to be ignored. We need more riders like Andy Anderson who don't care about the approval of people that don't care about their well being.

Why would you tell a little guy to take a helmet off? He literally hits his head and I skate too like I’ve been skating my whole life I would never tell a kid to take their helmet off

Need to end the stigma around helmets (talking big rail type skating)--skaters are getting CTE out here and for what? Washed up pros who have less talent trying to say he needs to take off the helmet, pitiful and bad role model.

A little confused on whats happening.. but cool! Is he pro? Is he am? If hes am then thats not a rookie. A rookie is a new pro. Did yall turn him pro? Can yall turn him pro? I have so many more questions. Is this just business? Is this life? Am I a toaster? 😂
