The engineers at Boeing could have never imagined that 68 years later, here in 2020 that their creation would still be flying in front line service. Outstanding achievement.

They considered using turboprops at an early design-stage, something that the Russians picked up and ran with.

The one man at the controls of this airplane was one "Tex Johnston", Boeing chief pilot at the time, who a few years later would pull off the most historical menuver with the civilian 707 test airplane. He was a well respected, and a really good pilot. Tex also test flew the B-47 Stratojet before this. This very creation of the B-52 would fly some 70 years later to this day in 2022, little did anyone know, and apparently will fly on into the future.

Funny to see one that's sides are all nice and smooth. All of I've seen in person ,at airshows,were all beercanned ,ripply down the sides. Always fascinated me how they landed in a nose down attitude,and seemed to assume one as soon as they were off the ground. Cool old bird. Just old enough to remember the aluminum umbrella,used to see flights of them all the time in the late 70's early 80's. Lived north east of KC MO,,and they were at altitude or real close by the time they crossed us from Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Knoster mo. Never got to see inside one at an airshow,as they were all still cocked and locked,they would have a portable fence all around it,with Air Force security people with m16s and signs saying just how quick the boys in blue would shoot you inside the fence. They were pretty serious.

The wrinkled skins were part of the mass reduction to increase payload. By allowing a certain amount of flexing of certain parts of the fuselage Boeing reduced the empty mass of the aircraft.
@rael54692 жыл бұрын
@@davidhoffman1278 You are correct sir. Many see the wrinkles as age related but not so. One of the prototype B-52s has the wrinkles.
@davidhoffman12782 жыл бұрын
@@rael5469 , Those scary looking wrinkles never seemed to be a problem for aircraft flown within the design and engineering limits, but that stout looking vertical fin sure came apart far too often.
@rael54692 жыл бұрын
@@davidhoffman1278 I was only aware of the vertical fin coming off once and they were purposely looking for turbulence on a test flight. Were there other incidents?

And it may wind up being your children’s aircraft. As of 2008. And different aircraft but same concept......... As of 2008. There was a documentary about the KC-135 StratoTanler.....built around the same era as B-52zzzzz Summary. The interviewer stated that....... The parents of the last generation of KC-135 crews have not even been born yet. Yes I said it right. Parents even is born in 2008.......figure around 20-25 years before they have children. Then another let’s say 25 years by the time they grow up, go to school and college, graduate, get selected for KC-135 or any military pilot training but for this concept let’s say KC-136 or B-52 training and to a operational squadron. 2008-2028. About she earliest. Those parents have a child then add another 25 ish years before they even see inside of a live operational KC-135/B52 cockpit. 2008+20 is 2028. 2028+25 is 2053. 2053 in theory this aircraft will still be in service near, at or above 100 years. With proper upkeep, updates in avionics, engines, structural components not unheard of it going that long.

Hard to imagine. First B52 flight was 76 years ago. 76 YEARS. Seriously 76 freakin years ago. What was happening 76 years before the first flight. That would be 1876. It was the country's centinnial. MURICA!

OK you got me. I was afraid someone would notice that. Just imagine same comment here, but with all the "76"s as "66"s, and the "1876" as "1886". Still incredible. What was SAC flying in 1886? Oh, right! Controlled, powered man flight had not occured yet. In 1952 there were still Civil War veterans around.
