That Hyper Threading sure works wonders, But I wonder how it would perform if you removed the HT from the i3,

It'd be nice to see if there was a difference at all, like in certain games that benefit from Hyper Threading, but yes I would imagine performance to be similar
@gasparspeed
@gasparspeed 7 жыл бұрын
Probably just the Cache and Clockspeed difference. Pentium Gs are just i3s with HT disabled, there was even a Pentium G model that you could buy that was able to unlock hyperthreading and "extra" cache if you bought a special code for the BIOS.
@HappyBeezerStudios
@HappyBeezerStudios 7 жыл бұрын
I guess without HT the i3 would perform pretty similar to a non-overclocked E6700/7600/8500 After all the biggest change on the LGA1156 platform was the integration of stuff like the memory controller and a better power efficiency. The internals of the execution units intself were pretty close to Penryn. (45nm Core 2) IPC improvements similar to what we have now.

gasparspeed Which model was that? Also, BIOS is better than UEFI because manufacturers now lock the shit out of hardware, which wasn't as easy for them to do back in the days of the BIOS!

The Q6600 can sometimes stutter in places the i3 doesn't due to 2 of the CPU cores in the Q6600 having to use the FSB to talk to the other 2 CPU cores. The Core 2 Quad CPUs were really just 2 Core 2 Duos strapped together with the FSB used as the link. The i3 doesn't have that limitation although HT can impose different performance penalties in certain situations. The Q82xx series quads were even a bit worse with respect to the FSB because they had half the L2 cache that the Q66xx series. I should know I still have a Q8200 based machine that I use often.
@HappyBeezerStudios
@HappyBeezerStudios 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, C2Q's really benefit from raising the FSB. running the Q6600 on 6x 400 should already give quite a boost over the default 9x 266. But the higher the better. Ofcourse it depends on the amount of communication between the cores. So it will rise and fall depending on the code running on them. Havong 8 MB cache (4 MB per die) on the Q6xxx and 4 MB (2 MB per die) on the lower end Q8xxx. The upper Q8xxx and lower Q9xxx had 6 MB (3 MB per die). And then there were the Q9xxx series with 12 MB L2 (6MB per die) A hugs cache even by todays standards. Some application had quite the scaling over the cache with up to 30% difference between 2 MB and 6 MB on the same clock speed.

It came inside an old DELL XPS420 and thus, came on a motherboard that doesn't allow overclocking :( Over the last 10 years I burnt up the 8800GT it came with so that was replaced with a GTX750 Ti and I doubled the original 4GB RAM to 8GB. 10 years later, it's now a Q6600, 8GB RAM and a GTX750 Ti. I can't afford an upgrade so this is my daily machine and if your expectations are reasonable (given it's age), It's not a bad rig... ;)

I'm surprised that you only overclocked the Q6600 to 3.0Ghz, it was made to run at that speed when it was in development, but they noticed it got pretty hot in some low air-flow environments so they locked the FSB to 1066 and dropped the clock down to 2.4Ghz unless you overclocked. Covering the single pad brings the CPU back to it's original development speed of 3.0Ghz and 1333 FSB, I've seen some people push it further than 4.0Ghz on shitty stock coolers so you should have no problem pushing it. I'm sorry for so many comments haha

Yep, planning during the autumn later this year to either do the socket 771 mod on a decent socket 775 motherboard i got for free here. The asus p5q pro currently housing a core 2 duo e6600 4 gb 800 mhz ram planning to get a 80w E5450 xeon & combine it with the 9800gtx + i got laying around atm for a cheap & somewhat period correct gaming pc. gonna be windows xp & windows 7 dualbooting ofc. On locked down or oem motherboards that supports the bsel overclocking mod its really useful to do that mod for some extra performance. Also got 4 gb ddr3 stick, am3+ matx motherboard (from a friends pc build a few years ago & got the 4 gb ram stick free.) & my old athlon II x3 445 which without any effort unlocks too a quadcore on this motherboard. (In 2010 the athlon II x3 cpus was ridiculously good money for the performance if you had a good set of ram as some people pushed those athlon II x3 cpus after they unlocked the 4th core closer too 4 ghz & some even hit that. I did on a gigabyte 870a ud3 rev 2.1 motherboard with 1333 mhz ram hit a 3.6 ghz overclock on a arctic cooling freezer 13 pro with voltage & fsb too spare sticking with the 1333 mhz speedlimit of my ram. (I could probably have pushed it further but as a student i didn't dare too as i was afraid of breaking a ram stick & ending up not being able to spend any money on my rc hobby as well.)

Hassaan Ahmed If you're sticking to your native resolution of 1024x768, the bottleneck is put on the CPU and at some point would find the maximum framerate the processor is capable of putting out before it can't keep up with the graphivs card anymore. I wouldn't pair a GTX 1060 with such an old processor as you're paying for wasted headroom and potential of the card when paired with a low resolution/older parts that can't keep up.

You can cover one of the CPU pads and it'll fool it to run a higher FSB at 3.0Ghz instead of 2.4Ghz (huge difference, google the BSel pad mod) I have it paired with 8GB of 800Mhz DDR2, a 240GB SSD, 3x700GB harddrives in Raid0 and a GTX1050ti OC edition from Zotac running at about 25% over stock clocks. It's a solid system and can be built (minus the raid) for about $400. Smashes a XBone out of the water!

***** Easier said than done. I totally just have about 1000$ to drop on a new cpu + GPU, and a new motherboard for the socket plus new ram since I use DDR2 800mhz. Did I mention my rig costs less than 400$ and can smash an XBOne out of the water?

I'd like to see the difference after overclocking. I've got a i3 550 amongst my spare parts that I've had running at 4.5GHz before in a PC I built for a friend. Never owned a Q6600 but I have had a Q9650 at 4GHz since 2008. I used it as my main gaming PC right up until I finally upgraded in 2014. Would be interesting to see how they perform in modern games at those clocks. A project for me to do in the future perhaps...

With older CPU, what is most relevant is will it do smooth (with subjectively acceptable 1% lows) 60fps at 1080P? For these CPU, the answer is no way!

Neat.. I'm actually building a budget pc (with a lot of info learned here) based on an i3-540 I found in my basement (I know right) that has a fairly modern and featured mobo.

I personally own the Q6600and use it daily, and I think it's still great. I can play all of my games on decent settings (exept Watch_Dogs 1...) and It's still a great CPU.

You can get a Q9300 (or Q9400) also for $15 and that one has a 1333Mhz FSB and is 45nm. A much more sensible purchase and will beat the first gen i3 consistently.

You should get Paladins, I prefer it due to the extra strategy aspect with the card system, and it's a lot less taxing on the PC, so you can get a better looking game with a really budget system

please benchmark them both overclocked! That quad core with a bsel/tap mod is fairly good considering it age and a free boost!

I suggest that you should use MSI afterburner & RivaTuner to show fps and cpu/gpu load on screen rather than Fraps. It's more customizable, prettier and uses less memory than Fraps! Other than that, great content!

Why not try a Q9550 ? I still have one in my old gaming rig @3.6 ghz . 8gb ddr2 & a evga 780i sli mobo w/a gtx 760 2gb card . I also have a Q6600 in a Lenovo pc that my wife swiped from me . I still have another Q6600 loose in the closet waiting for a home... Love these low-budget builds too , keep up the good work !

What if i told you that I am still using a 8 years old core 2 quad? Roch solid cpu. Running on 2,7ghz with stock cooler. Still capable to run most games at low, butfor such an old machine is something.

I think the ram speed in the older core 2 quad processors might create a bottleneck in powering the full potential of a modern day card , that's where the i3's are advantageous even tho the c2q's can achieve a lot of power if they're oc'ed

If I had to choose between these two CPU's I'd take the Q6600 any day. Although overall performance seems similar in this testing, owning one of Intel's first quad cores is still way more badass than owning one of the first of a series of boring low end office CPUs.

I just realized that I have a spare Q9400, a G41 Gigabyte 775 mb and at least 2gb ddr2-6400 memory. I should do something with that.

You are getting stutters on Q6600 because of Motherboards PCI-E gen 1.1 which limit the card. Also 1156 system can be upgraded to i5 and i7, 775 only tu QX which is not good idea.

One problem with 775 motherboards: More difficult to get 8GB of RAM running at any speed above 667MHz (at least, it was with my P5K VM, P5Q Turbo and P5Q Deluxe-the older P5K had greater success).
