It'd be nice to see if there was a difference at all, like in certain games that benefit from Hyper Threading, but yes I would imagine performance to be similar
@gasparspeed7 жыл бұрын
Probably just the Cache and Clockspeed difference. Pentium Gs are just i3s with HT disabled, there was even a Pentium G model that you could buy that was able to unlock hyperthreading and "extra" cache if you bought a special code for the BIOS.
@HappyBeezerStudios7 жыл бұрын
I guess without HT the i3 would perform pretty similar to a non-overclocked E6700/7600/8500 After all the biggest change on the LGA1156 platform was the integration of stuff like the memory controller and a better power efficiency. The internals of the execution units intself were pretty close to Penryn. (45nm Core 2) IPC improvements similar to what we have now.
@davidjohnson81227 жыл бұрын
gasparspeed Which model was that? Also, BIOS is better than UEFI because manufacturers now lock the shit out of hardware, which wasn't as easy for them to do back in the days of the BIOS!

The Q6600 can sometimes stutter in places the i3 doesn't due to 2 of the CPU cores in the Q6600 having to use the FSB to talk to the other 2 CPU cores. The Core 2 Quad CPUs were really just 2 Core 2 Duos strapped together with the FSB used as the link. The i3 doesn't have that limitation although HT can impose different performance penalties in certain situations. The Q82xx series quads were even a bit worse with respect to the FSB because they had half the L2 cache that the Q66xx series. I should know I still have a Q8200 based machine that I use often.
@HappyBeezerStudios7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, C2Q's really benefit from raising the FSB. running the Q6600 on 6x 400 should already give quite a boost over the default 9x 266. But the higher the better. Ofcourse it depends on the amount of communication between the cores. So it will rise and fall depending on the code running on them. Havong 8 MB cache (4 MB per die) on the Q6xxx and 4 MB (2 MB per die) on the lower end Q8xxx. The upper Q8xxx and lower Q9xxx had 6 MB (3 MB per die). And then there were the Q9xxx series with 12 MB L2 (6MB per die) A hugs cache even by todays standards. Some application had quite the scaling over the cache with up to 30% difference between 2 MB and 6 MB on the same clock speed.

I'm surprised that you only overclocked the Q6600 to 3.0Ghz, it was made to run at that speed when it was in development, but they noticed it got pretty hot in some low air-flow environments so they locked the FSB to 1066 and dropped the clock down to 2.4Ghz unless you overclocked. Covering the single pad brings the CPU back to it's original development speed of 3.0Ghz and 1333 FSB, I've seen some people push it further than 4.0Ghz on shitty stock coolers so you should have no problem pushing it. I'm sorry for so many comments haha

Yep, planning during the autumn later this year to either do the socket 771 mod on a decent socket 775 motherboard i got for free here. The asus p5q pro currently housing a core 2 duo e6600 4 gb 800 mhz ram planning to get a 80w E5450 xeon & combine it with the 9800gtx + i got laying around atm for a cheap & somewhat period correct gaming pc. gonna be windows xp & windows 7 dualbooting ofc. On locked down or oem motherboards that supports the bsel overclocking mod its really useful to do that mod for some extra performance. Also got 4 gb ddr3 stick, am3+ matx motherboard (from a friends pc build a few years ago & got the 4 gb ram stick free.) & my old athlon II x3 445 which without any effort unlocks too a quadcore on this motherboard. (In 2010 the athlon II x3 cpus was ridiculously good money for the performance if you had a good set of ram as some people pushed those athlon II x3 cpus after they unlocked the 4th core closer too 4 ghz & some even hit that. I did on a gigabyte 870a ud3 rev 2.1 motherboard with 1333 mhz ram hit a 3.6 ghz overclock on a arctic cooling freezer 13 pro with voltage & fsb too spare sticking with the 1333 mhz speedlimit of my ram. (I could probably have pushed it further but as a student i didn't dare too as i was afraid of breaking a ram stick & ending up not being able to spend any money on my rc hobby as well.)

I think the ram speed in the older core 2 quad processors might create a bottleneck in powering the full potential of a modern day card , that's where the i3's are advantageous even tho the c2q's can achieve a lot of power if they're oc'ed

If I had to choose between these two CPU's I'd take the Q6600 any day. Although overall performance seems similar in this testing, owning one of Intel's first quad cores is still way more badass than owning one of the first of a series of boring low end office CPUs.

I just realized that I have a spare Q9400, a G41 Gigabyte 775 mb and at least 2gb ddr2-6400 memory. I should do something with that.

You are getting stutters on Q6600 because of Motherboards PCI-E gen 1.1 which limit the card. Also 1156 system can be upgraded to i5 and i7, 775 only tu QX which is not good idea.

Ehm... The QX6700 was earlier than the Q6600!

One problem with 775 motherboards: More difficult to get 8GB of RAM running at any speed above 667MHz (at least, it was with my P5K VM, P5Q Turbo and P5Q Deluxe-the older P5K had greater success).
