The AMD Phenom II X6 is even better than the FX6100 in alot of titles thanks to how well it Overclocks, and the fact that it has better IPC which in all honesty helps alot in the games that can't use all 6 threads. Still LGA1155 is definitely the best price/performance socket, the boards are cheap and so are the CPU's with an i7 2600K (£95) performing only 20% worse than an i7 7700K in gaming.

Budget-Builds Official but their aren't games that use 6 threads maybe in the future their will be(HL 3 confirmed) but this is the best processor for the price nonetheless with a good path of upgradability in the future

Phenom II X6 > FX 6100 FX 6300 > Phenom II X6 There is no reason to go for a 6100 when the 6300 cost exactly the same (used). The 6300 beats the Phenom clock for clock, the 6100 doesn't.

the problem with the phenom II series is their lack of instructions like SSE 4.1 , etc . that can couse mayor problems in some of titles like Metal gear solid V TPP at is launch or No mans sky. that why u should allways go for a FX series cpu even if the phenom outperform it . btw probably my best cpu ever was the Phenom II 965 i had to change it becouse of the already mention problems.

Well, if you think about it, most used/older I5's are really awesome for the money. I recently bought a used I5 4460 for €70, an awesome price for an awesome CPU. It handles pretty much everything out there today, and won't even bottleneck a GTX 1080. Edit: At 1080P it won't bottleneck (Running a 4460 + 1080 as i write this). At 1440P/4K it'll probably bottleneck. Edit2: I stand corrected. Upscaling to a higher resolution barely affects the CPU. Thank you Cortez Baldur for correcting me :)

I think you should add the X5650. Even if you get stuck on an unoverclockable board, the CPU outperforms the Q6600 by over 100% per core, 300% if you include all 6 cores+12 threads. That's at stock speed. I've seen the X5650 go for under $20 on eBay.

I bought an Dell Optiplex SFF with a core i5 3470, 8GB of DDR3 and 320GB HDD for 150EUR. Perhaps it's considered a bit pricey for the budget range. But heck it got a good PSU, nice small form factor case, a good cooling solution, and with a MSI 1050Ti Low Profile found on sale for 100EUR it actually makes a really awesome modern mid-range gaming rig. The i5 runs almost every game comfortably at 60+fps. :) I am super happy about it.

I can personally recommend the X5650. It's an LGA 1366 CPU and has 6 cores, 12 threads and can overclock quite easily to 4.5Ghz - they love heat and voltage. As a result, it absolutely flies and is great for rendering and games. I will say that it's not super, super easy to find an affordable and *good* X58 motherboard nowadays, but, if you can, go for it! Tripple channel DDR3 support (which, being honest, doesn't really do anything for real world use, just specific synthetic applications) and cheap DDR3 prices vs DDR4.. I think it's absolutely worth a go for a budget build. I couldn't be happier with mine!

Xeon X5450 is not worse than E5450, they're the same processor really, the TDP difference is caused because of the default vcore voltage setting being higher on the X, but you can always go in the bios and lower it down to the same value as E or even lower than that and get the low power consumption

I put a Xeon E5450 in an Asus P5K Pro (upgrading from a E8500) years ago and it still works great, and much cheaper than the equivalent Core2 Quad. A good cheap upgrade which kept my 2008 machine useful. I didn't bother with BIOS mods as the chip shared the microcode patches with another officially supported one.

I had a budget desktop I had purchased a couple of months back with some decent specs; an i3-2120 clocked at 3.3ghz, 6 gigs of DDR3 clocked at 1600mhz, a 1tb hard drive, and built in Wifi. I only spent $10 for it, and I turned it into a budget gaming PC by making some upgrades. Those upgrades included upgrading the ram to 12 gigs of DDR3, upgrading the CPU to a Xeon e3-1220 (more or less just an i5-2400), and a rx 460 2gb. I spent $35 on ram, $30 for the CPU, and $80 for the GPU, making the entire PC under $175. (Windows 10 was pre-installed but I upgraded it to Windows 10 using a key I got on ebay)

Easily OC’able over 4.0 in a single socket, two X5650’s require an SR-2 board which are a bit pricey, or heavy board modding with an SR-2 BIOS module retooled for your motherboard (they have them on E-bay for a bunch of Supermicro Boards running around $10 usd). You can find them in mobo/RAM combos w/2 x5650’s, 32+ GB ddr3 for $250 or so quite often, $100-$150 without RAM, or $35-$45 usd per CPU.

I buyed a new used motherboard with a AM2/AM2+/AM3 socket, a Phenom X4 9850 with 125W and a gig of ddr2 ram for just 30 Euros on ebay. Smashed 2x2GB rigs in there, a better cooler, my graphics card and started it up. Pretty happy with the Phenom. Just waiting for the better TDP cooler! But for the Budget, there are some Opterons at least in germany for sale for less than 20 Euros. They have AM2+ and use about 115W, they run also cool and are like Phenoms from the performance as long as i heard. When the board supports about 125W Cpus you are good to go!

With your advice, I was able to find some excellent deals on some computer parts with my budget build. I would not have known just how capable old Core 2 Quads are, and I would not have known about the performance of certain graphics cards and games. In the end, I was able to build an Overwatch rig for $150 featuring a Q9400 and a Radeon HD 5870 that runs the game at 40-60 FPS at 1080p! For that, thanks for the help Randomgaming! And keep up the great work with your videos!

one of the best deals you can get is the regular i5-2400, i got an entire optiplex 390 MT in perfect condition with windows 7 pro, 500GB of storage, 8GB DDR3 1333MHz, keyboard and mouse for 130 dollars. i haven't installed a GPU yet (not enough money) but the specs say it supports 75w on the pcie slot, so i'm definetly getting a 1050 ti for it.

i have a 2500k, and can say with confidence that it is easily the best bang for the buck available under $100 right now. and if you pair it with a decent board for ocing (i personally have an ASUS P8Z68-V LE) with a 4.5 ghz oc, you can run titles like BF1 at 90 fps on an online domination game (have not played conquest yet) and the graphics settings just depend on your gpu. it is an insanely good chip. if you have a little bit extra to spare, get a really good Z77 board and a good cooler, and you could get to 4.8, maybe even 5 ghz, if you have some luck.

I'm using i5 2300, and I can say I don't really need anything better since it still runs everything I want without a problem. It is clocked a bit lower, but it is not a problem for me. I picked it up for around 90$ like two years ago, but prices dropped now to like 50$ on ebay, and for that price I can still recommend it to someone that wants to pair it with something like GTX 1060, since I think it would bottleneck something with more power than that.

When considering the 2500k, keep in mind that not all chipsets allow OC. My favourite is the 3470, which can be found for around 50€ and can easily be combined with old business PCs from that era, e.g. the HP 6300 Pro.

Speaking about AMD CPUs: There are a lot of good Phenom II and Phenom III processors out there on ebay. The good thing is that you can spend 15$ on your CPU and still upgrade it because of the AM3 Socket and its downwards compatibility to AM2. Also I have good experiences with FX CPUs because of very cheap used bundles on Ebay.

You can find 1st gen i7s for about 50$ maybe a little more, also a really good option, 4 cores and 8 threads with overclock as well, although 1156 and 1366 mobos are not as common now. Can't agree about 775 availability because I had like 20 of them for past 2 years for free, every pc from the dump or recycling came with 775 mb, although almost all boards were budget ones, so no OC and two DDR2 slots (I kept one with 4 DDR2 slots and one with 4 DDR3 slots).

My setup was pretty freaking good value for money. I have dual Xeons x5675's. They're insane, I get the same cinebench score as my mates AMD ryzen 1800x, and that's with them running at 3ghz, if I overclock then I'll get a score around 2100, that's threadripper territory! I paid £90 for a pair so £45 each! It's crazy!

If you can handle the cost of a mainboard, x58 4-core and 6-core c.p.u.s (especially the 6-core ones) are extreme value for money and when overclocked they're directly compared to haswell intel processors. Also, if found for cheap, haswell c.p.u.s (like the i7 4790k) could be bargains, as brand-new mainboards can be found for cheaper than ever (most z97 mainboards now cost less than or around 100€).

A lot of times the Xeon equivalent is cheaper than the i series and will slot right in. On older chipsets they're also overclockable. This is also a great upgrade path if you're stuck on say an 1156 i3 or i5 6xx cpu. The i7 860 is around $70 and the i5 750 around $40 while the Xeon X3450 and X3430 are $28 and $14.

The AMD Phenom II X6 is still a beast if you can get it to overclock well, and same for the memory it's not only good for gaming but for productive workloads like video/audio capture, and editing. I had the exact CPU you mentioned, for several years before my girlfriend's daughter accidentally spilled my morning coffee onto my then current rig rendering it useless, and it was a lesson learned to never put my computer under my desk anymore lol! the only thing I did not like about the Phenom II X6 CPU's is the 125Watt power draw, and the heat output, so a great air cooler, or good AIO water cooler is a must on those systems for long term use, plus a good 600 - 650 watt 80+ Bronze PSU is also a good idea with the Phenom CPU's in my experience.

I think the Xeon E3 1225 is the best value, I bought one for $30 recently , it is essentially an i5 2400 with the better Hd3000 IGP, I also bought an 1155 M/B with I/O shield for $15 it was pulled from an optiplex 390. And then it was $5 for a dell cooler that screws into the backplate. I also got lucky and bought an 8gb 1866 ECC udimm for $15.

I have two used servers both dual soc one G34 and one socket f and they both are maxed out on ecc memory with the soc f costing total $575 and the G34 soc costing $750 total. The only thing is it takes patience and time to wait for deals that can't be beat.

Currently got a Xeon E5450 on order for $26 AUD, with the motherboard socket and BIOS already modified (faulty PSU killed the previous X5450...which cost $50 3 years ago). I'd have ordered something LGA1155 (I could have bought an i5 3450 for $45 AUD), but to get a motherboard of at least as good as my LGA775 board would have cost well over $150.
Not bad for a £1 CPU...
