After the Geek and Sundry version of this story I actually hollowed out a turnip and carved it into a lantern face complete with handle and carried it as I took my daughter trick or treating.

To further the turnip/pumpkin thing at the end, it's cause pumpkins are an American crop not native to Ireland/Europe at all. The Irish settlers who moved to America escaping famine and the like brought the Jack O'Lantern tradition and found the pumpkins easier to carve out and made better faces.

In my country we had a similar story about "Uvieta" a guy who got the grim reaper stuck on a tree, the virgin mary comes to try and convince him to allow the Death to come down, also the priest, and eventually even god, and each time he tricked them to get on the tree so by the end he has a lot of people up there.

I had always heard that the Jack 'o Lantern was carved and lit to drive away evil spirits that come out during this season, which is why they have faces. The same reason for wearing masks.
@jakobboller10144 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you or another viewer can educate me on this, but I think there is a German or Scandinavian tale with the same general pattern of tricking the devil up a tree, but without the lantern part. It also reminds me a bit of The Wandering Jew and Norn's Guest. The latter of which also has a light-motif (hah), and isn't as nakedly racist as the former.
Very similar to the story of a swamp fire or such. The guy who gets a magic hammer and keeps basically holding the Devil Hostage. Which... is a common occurrence in folklore. Does the Devil develop Stockholm syndrome?
