I can imagine why you thought that when you were a child. We have so much media now and are exposed to so much that when we see people disagreeing like this today that we are so desensitized to it. It’s not a big deal. However, back in the 50s, when the only regular media were the 3ish channels on TV and daily newspaper, seeing something like this was much more jarring because there was no desensitization to these types of disagreements. I’m 33 years old right now and it is so refreshing to watch this after seeing the Biden/Trump debate last month. I completely agree with you that the current style of debate in our country is disgusting, unhinged, and dangerous. It really makes me ashamed that these are the people in our country for children to look up to. My daughter will be 5 years old in October and I have no desire for her to see any of the debates (even in the background as she’s coloring or something) because of how awfully the candidates treat one another. It is shameful.

Five things to note: 1. JFK and Nixon came to the Congress on the same day. Nixon is only 4 years older than JFK. Compared to Trump and Biden, the candidates of 1960 are kids... 2. Both Nixon and JFK served in the World War II. One major result of the war, was the ability of politicians of both parties to find "common ground" on certain issues, such as the G.I. Bill, Food Stamps, and National Security. It's hard to find any type of common ground, in the backgrounds of Trump and Biden, except that both of them appeared on the national scene for decades. 3. Both the Republican and Democratic Parties at the time, have conservative and liberal wings. The GOP had the Rockefeller Republicans and the Goldwater Republicans. The Democrats had the northern liberal wing, as well as the southern conservative wings. Both Nixon and Kennedy had to appear almost as centrists to get their nomination. Compromise, is a must, to get anything done in the 1950s and early 1960s. The Political Landscape of 2020, had Presidential Candidates having to come across as more appealing to the party base, than to the center. 4. The Congress is much more polarized today, than it was in 1960. Although the Democrats controlled almost two-thirds of both branches of The Congress, the bulk of the power within the Congress, rested with Southern Conservatives (Dixiecrat) who dominate the chairmanships of the key committees. These Dixiecrats, once elected, are essentially members for life. They accumulate seniority, dominate the key committees, and are unlikely to leave, except on their own accord. A Dixiecrat who chairs a key committee, such as Armed Services, might decline a Cabinet Spot, such as Secretary of Defense, because he rather control the Defense Department, from the other side of Pennsylvania Avenue. 5. JFK might propose new ideas, but realizes that he needs even higher majorities within the Congress, because of the alliance of Dixiecrats and Republicans. He needs more liberals within the Democratic Caucus of both the House and The Senate, but he also realizes that the Dixiecrats will likely remain in power, after his time as President. Despite the power the President has as a Party Leader, the odds of him being able to get rid of a Southern Democratic Congressman is slim. Most Dixiecrats can survive the primaries, when reelection comes, and the general election is typically a "rubber stamp".. Nixon is in the position of having to having to publicly defend the Eisenhower Administration, even if he disagrees with certain aspects of the President's agenda. At the same time, he also wants to provide some changes without offending the President (who is still the most popular politican at the time). Nixon is also bound, not to talk about certain aspects of National Security, like saying that the "missle gap" is false. The Congress of 2023, has very few moderates in either chamber. Almost all Democrats are liberals and almost all Republicans are conservatives. Compromise has become a "dirty word" in 2023.

The reason for that is that those were the 60s and very little has happened at that point in the US. As years went by - you had technology, wars, and greed take over the US and if you look at today's US - 90% of the people we thought were heroes ended up being corrupt and perverted. So of course, the situation is different, there were still secrets back then, people maintained their level of heroism without being exposed.

The reason debates aren’t like this anymore is because the average American isn’t smart enough to even understand the topics that they are debating. Go ask somewhat what the GDP is or what agricultural subsidies are. If you get anything other than a blank stare I’d be surprised.

Nixon here appears resolute, firm, and articulate, and I find it ABSOLUTELY hilarious that back in 1960 this was considered to be such an utter failure for the Nixon campaign that Nixon would never again agree to a Presidential election debate ever again, while today it is near impossible to find a candidate that can talk properly.

@@user-jc8rz2jj9rboth candidates have clear issues, as well as are up there in age. Trump doesn't get a pass because he didn't stumble, he still used heavy rhetoric over statistics and was dodging certain questions that were more important to answer just to respond to a comment from biden

Always found the Nixon Kennedy debate amazing. It was the first televised presidential debate. Many Americans still used radio but many had TVs by then as well. Those that heard over the Radio would often attribute the victory to Nixon and many who viewed it on TV would report to the press that they think Kennedy came out on top. It’s wild how the debate being televised had such a profound effect in elections from then on!
