The First Monday in May Official Trailer 1 (2016) - Documentary HD
The First Monday in May follows the creation of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's most attended fashion exhibition in history, "China: Through The Looking Glass," an exploration of Chinese-inspired Western fashions by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton. With unprecedented access, filmmaker Andrew Rossi captures the collision of high fashion and celebrity at the Met Gala, one of the biggest global fashion events chaired every year by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. Featuring a cast of renowned artists in many fields (including filmmaker Wong Kar Wai and fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano) as well as a host of contemporary pop icons like Rihanna, the movie dives into the debate about whether fashion should be viewed as art.

Yeah, those exhibitions were amazing, but it does make you question the meaning of life to know that there are ridiculously luxurious clothes that cost jillions of bucks.

Xuxa Gidayawan They actually used original Alexander McQueen pieces in the movies, because they found no costume designer to be able to be as crazy as said in the books. So they had to turn to high fashion, even though the pieces were... priceless, obviously. But well. That’s the power of perfectly designed clothes. They create a world only possible in movies.

I hope they focus more on the art of the designs but so far this trailer shows that the movie will be about getting ready for the event. I don't know why but when I saw this, I remembered The Capital from the Hunger Games. Perhaps it is because Jennifer Lawrence is there. After everything that has been happening...this seems so empty.

This is pathetic... Most artists are "struggling artists"... The "met gala" is only an exhibition of and for the elite, rich, and famous... True art is broadcast to all, yet at "the met", only the famous and rich get to view it.... Such an empty way of viewing the world.
@gerardoarenasss
@gerardoarenasss 7 жыл бұрын
drinkallthesunshine not really, this exhibitions get hundreds of regular people every year, this is just the fund raiser for the costume institute and the museum, if you give yourself a chsbyto see this documentary you'll probably be mesmerized by the amount of work and thought this has, is not only about a party and famous people, is about mixing clothes with art and giving people a perspective of what "costume" is and how this shape and affect our societies.
@drinkallthesunshine
@drinkallthesunshine 7 жыл бұрын
Gerardo Arenas Exactly my point... True art should be available to whoever wants to see it... Not some fashion show for the rich and famous... It defeats the purpose of a gallery... the gallery is about viewing artwork, not whores like Rihanna and Beyoncé strutting down a carpet in a designer gown.... Most people only tune in to view the celebrities, not the art... Actually, nobody even sees the artwork really... Its just the runway walks that gets published.... It's fucking pathetic.

what always surprises me is is how these met balls and other fashion events soo purely american!!! i mean, they have chinese installations/ art. decorations that are borderline like chinese restaurants , but fail to invite leading chinese actors/ artists, to experience it/ participate in it. this year, they could have invited the japanese actors/ artists/ fashion designers for their take on Rei Kawakubo, but turns out that kardashians are more important!!! the least the can do is to compulsarily make their guests stick to the theme, to respect the artist!!

can you recommend movies like this? the kind that would cultivate you about the fashion field
@beautifullEternal
@beautifullEternal 7 жыл бұрын
Emna F There are some good ones in the recommendations. Excuse tl;dr *The September issue* is a documentary that digs into the biggest issue of American Vogue and Anna Wintour's role in the whole thing; gross displays of materialism ensues. *Diana Vreeland: The eye has to travel* is about a legendary fashion editor. Also *Scatter my ashes at Bergdorf's* about the luxury department store. Though there's a lot about the 'fashion world' on it's own, I enjoy documentaries about designers more. It's like a little glimpse in their head. Personally speaking, Karl Lagerfeld is like a human version of a dramatic fashion quote blog, or the Urban Dictionary of fashion. If you can stand him, there's quite a few out there about him. His longevity and status kind of make him an icon. He's been around and seen some shit. *Lagerfeld Confidential* was great. There was also this great Dutch documentary 'Close up: Lagerfeld vs YSL' which is actually mostly spoken in English, I don't know if there's subs. It's about Karl and Yves and them being frenemies. There's a book called *A beautiful fall* by Alicia Drake. I haven't read it yet, but it's also supposed to be about those two and the shift in culture at the time. But yeah, Lagerfeld is probably one of the most materialistic and weirdest dudes out there, most people recoil from him. Some one almost the opposite is Vivienne Westwood. More of the punk and counter culture variety. *Do it yourself* also tells about the transition from tailored to fast fashion in England and some more cultural stuff. Also Westwoods ethics and view of things. There's also *Valentino: The last emperor* Which is lovely. One of the last great designers of a previous era of fashion, who actually understands old school glamour. And, not necessarily 'fashion' But *Paris is Burning* is a glimpse in 80's ( I think? ) drag culture in New York, specifically the Ball Scene. It's on Netflix and KZbin, and STILL relevant. But that's just my taste. And yeah all the Chanel and Dior documentaries, they're all great, but after a while they get stale.

It's funny Rihanna was hosting considering she is in the top 10 worst dressed celebrity list.... Being 'fashionable' and honored should be more than a name and what you wear to red carpets... You should style yourself and dress to impress 247, wether you are going to a red carpet, gym or Walmart. And that is what being truly a trend setter is about.

The question should be: why are there not more amazingly talented and creative people as in the Met, working and making us dream, no matter their age, gender, ethnicity or sexuality? There shouldn't be black people first of all, there should be creative and professional people first of all. If they are black, so be it. No one cares about that in fashion.
