He was incredible…He was my inspiration to start competitive bodybuilding. I’m now 73 and looking at this video it brings it all back to that time. Yes, that’s why they called him the myth, you couldn’t believe what you were seeing! I saw him guest pose at a show and he just blew away the audience. When he hit his famous back shot with his arms straight over his head, whoa…unreal with that tiny waist. All these years later I can still see that shot in my mind.

The non IFBB show I saw him in at the Beacon Theater in NYC, which he won hands down, also included the great Serge Nubret, who looked great aesthetically, but when Sergio came out on stage it was all over. Nubret was not in his league and neither was anyone else there.

I used to train at Sergio’s gym on the North side of Chicago in Roger’s Park. He used to train right along with us. He ran a tight gym in that you better put your own weights back when finished. You didn’t want him to have to come in the locker room and politely remind you. I first met him when I was a 19 year old Chicago Police Cadet in 1969. He later became a Chicago Police Oand naturally had to get a custom fit uniform!

The true GOAT, even in the autumn of his career he was one of my main inspirations in 1982 when I was 18 years old. The first time I saw pics of him winning WABBA title in 1980 I couldn’t understand how a human could be built like a real life Marvel Superhero, a true phenomenon. Rear lat spread was like an aircraft hangar, with forearms like tree trunks. Then the famous front arms aloft with out turned fists as if swinging on parallel overhead bars like a gymnast. Only Lee Priest could mimic that incredible pose.

True story. I was big into bodybuilding in the 60's and this was a time before it was fashionable. We used to hide the mags so no one would see us read them. I am from Chicago and Sergio was our hero. We all thought he got robbed in his try for the 3rd Olympia but thats life. About twenty years later I was driving my car with my friend shotgun . I ran a stop sign and the blue lights came on. My friend was happy because he was the one that always got stopped. Well , it turned out to be Sergio!! Nice guy. His CPD Blue jacket must have been a 56 or so and he was all muscle. We spent the next twenty minutes talking about all things. How Weider screwed him. Etc. When we were done he actually apologized for stopping me!! Cant say enough about him. It was the biggest thrill for me to finally meet him. My friend? He was really pissed that I didn't get a ticket. All he could say was the luck of the Irish. and Im Jewish. LOL. RIP Sergio.

@@devaughnjohnson8119 Sergio Stories. He also trained police recruits at the academy. Must have been incredible to have him as your instructor. He worked out at the Duncan Y early on, which is on the near north side of Chicago. It was a hotbed of bodybuilding way back when. I think Bob Gajda, who was Mr America and beat Sergio worked there. Sergio was completely pissed off and how could he not as he was literally The Myth and he jumped to Weider. Most people do not know that he was a Cuban Olympic Weightlifter who defected when her in a tournament. So he was super strong. These guy just exhude strength. I heard a story that he was at a restaurant where some guy got upset with his girlfriend and severely beat her. This was before he became a cop, I believe. He held the guy until the cops came. The story goes that he he held the guy by his neck with his right hand while calmly seated at the lunch counter eating soup with his left. Its so unbelievable that its has to be true. Another story. His wife got him really upset and he got so pissed he came at her. She shot him in the stomach and his abs were so strong the bullet did not go into his stomach. Amazing. He was maybe 5' 8" or so and weighed about 240 and was all muscle with a 29 inch waist, 56 inch chest and 20 plus arms. And this was at a time before the current stacking which combines, anabolic steroids, human growth hormones, micronized creatine, EPO, Beta Blockers, stimulants and diureltics. This stacking is amazing and creates these mass monsters as there is a sinergistic effect when taking them all together BUT they are toxic and you have to cycle on and off and even then the level of toxicity is so great that serious health complications almost always result. I just saw a picture of the current Mr Olympia, Big Ramy who is 337 now right before he goes on a cut up diet to be shreeded. Id say right now his fat percent is about 10 and he looks incredibe. When he is done he will be about 5% which is the lower human limit as there is some fat around the organs for health purposes. So he will be well over 300 lbs at less than 6 feet and cut to ribbons.

Interestingly, this training program with Jones actually made Sergio's arms grow bigger as well as his legs. Sergio fueled his training with incredible liquid intake, telling one interviewer "I would drink a gallon of milk every day, and I would drink two gallons of water a day." Sergio eventually rotated back to a higher volume training approach, but looking back, he said he wished he would have stayed with Jones and his incredible HIT training style. "It was so hard to look impressive next to him with those incredible thighs, that impossibly tiny waist, those incredible triceps" - Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sergio Oliva SR His diet and workout plan Meal 1 - 1 cup of cooked oatmeal with 12 egg whites. Meal 2 - 1 cup of cooked rice with 8-10 oz fish and tuna. Meal 3 - 1 cup of cooked rice with a salad, fresh vegetables and 10-12 oz steak. Meal 4 - (post workout) 8-10 oz chicken breast, 2 cups cooked oatmeal. Meal 5 - Salad, fresh vegetables with 8-10 oz of fish. Meal 6 - 1 cup cooked rice with 10 egg whites Monday - Chest and Back (Bench, Dips, Flys, Chins) Tuesday - Shoulders, Biceps, Triceps Wednesday - Abs, Legs, Calves Thursday - Chest and Back Friday - Biceps and Triceps Saturday - Abs and Legs Sunday - REST

@Simon Palmer 80's to early 90's I'm assuming. You know we looked at people like Oliva and Arnold even back then cause we all knew there was nothing better..but in those days..wow..that's a lot to ask for Iean there were loads and all had there own perfect parts that stood out about the rest..Paris with his perfect abs..Ray with the perfect waistline and X build that we all aspire to..can't understand to this day how he never won Olympia! Iran look Beckeles in his 50's pulling off a 20 odd year old build and as tight and as hard as any of them..and the actual amount of competitions he won all together was phenomenal! My love of the perfect physique and this as close to an answer I can give you is the Era of Grimmeck to Reeves all the Pearl and Arnold and Oliva..those were what I'd aspire to..that's what 'turned me on' for want of a better phrase.. lol. But the guys in that particular Era I can name body parts to certain people but none did for me as a complete unit as, like I said, further back! I met Sergio when on vacation in the Bahamas....I was working out and kept looking at this guy who was an older gentleman....it dawned on me it was Him....I wanted to meet him so bad but I was literally so intimidated by him I didn't want to approach him while he was working out,so I waited hahaha after my workout I waited for him to finish and I went up to him and ask him if he was Sergio Oliva and smiled and said yes....funny that his voice doesn't fit his look...almost like a smaller voice for such a massive man and he was even then...I was around 36yrs old so I figured he was at least 20 yrs older...his forearms were as big as my biceps and I was in pretty good shape .....he's such a humble laid-back personality it felt like but he was very personable for the short time we spoke...I had on at the time a golds gym sweatshirt and wish I had had a marker or pen for him to sign, but the experience of meeting him I'll never forget.

Just imagine in those era.. sergio can have magnificent physics even without steroids us mind-blowing...he has fantastic physics even in today's era they didn't have.. Sergio came with the best physics in history of bodybuilding with only hard work and raw talent... U see in today's era all the fighters are going for steroids for muscle development..and become big..but in today's old era's sergio was truly a fantabulous bodybuilder...and he is a legend that today's era should know and learn from him to become fabulous bodybuilder without any steroids..and his biceps and triceps ate huge..and only one Sergio in the history of bodybuilding..guys..

Sergio Oliva did not dethrone Larry Scott at all, because in 1967, the previous two-time Mr. Olympia Larry Scott did not even compete at the Mr. Olympia.

I had the privilege to see Sergio in 1974. The videos don't capture the magic. What is being said here is true. He didn't look real. It was as if he had come from another planet. I know that his shoulders and lats didn't reach the full width of the stage, but they seemed to. He was the greatest bodybuilder I had ever seen.

No weak points from the beginning. His best form was from 1972 and on as he dominated WBBG contests winning Mr. Galaxy and World Professional Bodybuilding titles.

The triceps was dominating his Biceps though. And compared to Arnold he didn't have that true biceps peak. But overall he had almost the complete package.

Correction, Arnold only had one peak. His left arm biceps were as FLAT as a pan cake.@@Magnus_Loov

His lackluster biceps (in most poses) was his only weak spot. Lack of conditioning isn’t a genetic flaw, but might’ve held him back somewhat. Forearms, triceps and lats let him pull off that shockingly great victory pose - which nobody has come close to matching.
