The FIRST Portal 2 BETA LEAK! - A Quick Dissection

Portal: Companion Collection has just recently released, and with it - MANY new Portal 2 beta maps were found to not have been cleaned out of it's files. Thanks to the efforts of the Portal Series Beta Research community, these maps were extracted from the Collection, making this the very FIRST Portal 2 beta leak. I cobbled together this video INCREDIBLY quickly so I apologise if it's not my best work!

I REAAAALLY wanna just drive it forward how it's literally a jpeg of a projector. Unlike the "coconut jpeg" tf2 hoax, it is LITERALLY JUST a jpeg renderes from half life model viewer. Amazing.

The projector JPG was used in conjunction with the HLMV (Half-Life Model Viewer) tool that comes with practically every Source game. It's just a preview image for a projector model so that developers could easily find models in an icon-based list. There's no reason for those to be present in a console release since they do not have access to HLMV, so I assume it's just a leftover from the PC versions. Also noteworthy: In Half-Life 2, the HLMV preview image (JPG) for the energy orb pickups utilize an earlier (2004) version of the model that predates the Orange Box changes made in 2007 which replaces the model with the one used in Episode One.

They...haven't though? It only released on PC, Xbox 360 (twice for Portal 1) and PS3 when Portal 2 came out, the Switch was the first real proper official re-release of these games.
