I think the best argument for Darkseid having the simple tunic is this: Have you seen most of Jack Kirby's characters? Jack Kirby can do some crazy overdesigned dudes in his sleep. If he wanted a dude wearing a plain, simple tunic, you can bet that he made a conscious decision to give him a plain, simple tunic.

Some of the coolest parts of this book were used in DC animation: superman turning evil was in superman the animated series and g gordon godfrey WOULD HAVE TURNED OUT TO BE AN AGENT OF DARKSEID in young justice, let's hope for season 3

I always took the rockiness of Darkseid's face to be a Dorian Grey-esque physical manifestation of his evil (which, as Grant Morrison will tell you, is all-consuming). As in, he starts to look that way, but isn't, like the Thing, a biological creature with mineral-based skin. Although Kirby was probably just like, "I'll give him rock-skin, right?! Yeah, yeah, everyone loves the other character that I made with rocky skin!"

This Martian Manhunter-led Justice League was not the post-Crisis JL. They were actually the iteration of the league post-Satellite era or Bronze Age. Founded by Aquaman and based in Detroit, they were disbanded after Legends to make way for Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis' JLI, which was the post-Crisis Justice League.

Legends was a blessing after the Detroit league. for a bit it seemed like they were going to keep the new JLa as the permanent team so seeing them get replaced was very nice. (even though a couple of them were pretty cruelly killed off). and the great Super Powers figures were in stores, including Dr Fate!

one thing before Detroit league for most of the late 70s to 80s is that you'd very seldom get the big 3, if any of them in Justice League stories. you'd get one or two, and then the second and third and fourth stringers. and Barry Allen Flash was busy almost all the time with his own problems . so the use of the DC Trinity being in most league stories is really only about 26 years old since about late 1996.

This is no joke but apparently Jack Kirby originally had Darkseid just appear in a persons apartment, sit on there couch and talk to them about life.
