As EV sales reach mainstream buyers, the need to make charging networks reliable is super crucial. Early adopters will put up with crap, but many mainstream consumers will not. Love seeing this kind of data/communication system. I do not like counting on companies to share true data. The worst thing about EA, as you mentioned, is the app not reflecting units that are out of order. I bought a Bolt EUV a month ago and drove it back to Memphis from Sarasota; the first EA station I hit I picked the 150kW charger to be sure I wasn’t on a 350kW. Only 1 out of 4 chargers was occupied. As I tried and tried to get the 150kW to work, even calling EA, the other two spots filled up. Which only added insult to injury because I then had to wait for someone else to finish before I could even start charging. At the second stop, only 2 of 4 chargers were working, I had to wait again to charge. This has to change, I’m not new to EV ownership by any means. Love the car though, it will be a great car for us 50 out of 52 weeks per year. We’ll probably still rent a big comfy GM SUV for vacations, my better half wouldn’t do well with these kinds of delays.

my first EV was a 2017 Bolt. Loved the car around town. Drove from Columbia SC to ATL and back one day. Had to charge three times, no problem... but each time I had to call the charge operator to reset the charger and I had to charge above 80% to be sure I had enough juice to get to the alternate next charger. I had that car about a year and changed jobs. The bolt wasn't practical for my new role traveling so I got a M3 and never have to worry about charging. Tesla network used to mean that I charged to 100% the night before a road trip, but now, I don't even do that... I just get in the car at 90% and go. BTW, thank you for being thoughtful and trying to not use up the 350kw spots with your Bolt. No good deed goes unpunished eh?

And please let it go global! Electroheads had a video awhile back with a title along the lines of ‘this could end EVs’ and the words ‘are we safe?’ In the thumbnail and it talks about how safe people feel when they are charging, particularly at night. There was going to be a thing where people from an organisation would go out and inspect and rate chargers but last I checked it didn’t really seem to have gotten off the ground… I’m guessing funding and people power was an issue? So I really like this alternate take where the data is being collected from user submissions because that helps mobilise the people power in numbers that is needed. Love the idea of this whole thing and that you using your platform to help elevate the voice of the people! My biggest concern going forward would be simplicity, ease of use and maintaining engagement across a wide user base so everyone can easily review both positive and negative experiences instead of just mostly those who had a hard time doing it. And also that you manage to manage it in such a way that it isn’t overwhelming to your team to sift through the data XD kind of important. Which, early days with lots of kinks to iron out but what you are doing is _brilliant_ and amazing to hear, so thank you to you and all the team and hope you keep up the amazing work!

I really appreciate the information you provide for charging and EVs in general. I probably spend more time on your various channels than the rest of KZbin combined. One comment on your rating approach: Total failures should drive the rankings. This week the "Other" category should definitely have been in last place. 57% vs 58% "Good Charge" ratings is statistically insignificant (or "near as makes no difference" to use your term) given the relative sample size for each. However, 25% total failure rate is significant even for the sample size. A few extra minutes because the app had a problem or the charge was slower is nothing compared to having to find another charge location and reroute your trip.

Thanks for doing this, Kyle. I understand that Twitter is an open platform, but as someone who doesn't use Twitter, it seems that the platform itself is a form of selection bias. Many non-Tesla EV owners I know also refuse to use Twitter (for possibly obvious reasons), so it seems like you might be missing the target audience who actually has the best insight into using public charging infrastructure with little to no motivation to misrepresent their experiences. In combination with the fact that people are overwhelmingly more likely to report a negative experience than a positive or expected experience, I would expect the results of "Rate Your Charge" on Twitter to always skew towards the worst-case, most-negative experiences.

We live in Northwest Arkansas and travel to Fort Worth regularly and have given up using our taycan for the trip due to unreliability and slow chargers. Suggestion: we drivers don't all 'know' how many chargers at a location are down, have issues, etc., if we are only working with one, and we then get it to work. Also, I'm not sure that most of us are checking the 'manufacturer' of the unit while charging. Maybe this will prompt some of us to 'look' for these details, although paying attention to units farther down the line doesn't seem to be something most of us would get out of our vehicles to do. I've seen MANY EA charger screens show as 'active', and yet when you plug in nothing works - they'd be no way to know the real status unless you do. Also, the APP doesn't always give you the appropriate up-to-date at-the-moment status of some chargers, just labeling them as 'unknown'... but, I get your reasons for trying to collect the data to better assemble critical feedback for us and the manufacturers/hosts. For Chargepoint, in Georgia we see a LOT of these, although they are many times only Level2, and the DC Fast Chargers tend to be the SLOWEST of all fast chargers, though there seems to be many more of these in locations where EA and others are not - it's nice to have SOME fast charging, in more places, than just 'faster' chargers - if I can't GET to a charger, it matters not!

While having individual dispensers or entire stations down are useful to track, it seems a little disingenuous to try to present or extrapolate from a hundred check-ins in percentage/pie-chart or ranking form. I support pushing charging infrastructure forward and hopefully this will gain attention so that stations will improve. As we've seen with Plugshare, there will be a certain level of fatigue where people stop or only log upon negative experiences after a while. Maybe having a monthly report with more data and weighted data to give a proper picture. At least to me, the graphs and short form video show the anecdotal data as representative of a large sample, which they aren't yet. A single check-in can affect a network by 2% or 17%. That being said, showing flat amounts might make a bigger impact. Any non-zero stranding a user should raise alarms

If the biggest engine you encounter on the road is a 4cylinder it would go well in the way to bring about fuel economy with the current gasoline network we have. In a disaster situation like a earthquake EV's are mostly disadvantaged. Cars like the Rivian and Ford lightning if they had a 3 cyl generator could have 500-1000km range. What we are seeing is a transition implemented without a clear plan.

Kyle can you elaborate on how the data is displayed? Are you checking for single users putting in repeated reports of n the same charger? Different people with the same issue on the same charger? Are most people not bothering to report good charges? I think your initial communication around Rate Your Charge was to rate bad experiences rather than good. I think that has since shifted however I would bet most people are NOT eating good charges. I’d love to see people rate when spots are ICD’d and that data go to local cities or property owners letting them know how often it happens. Even reports of EV’s clogging up charging spots. This is the only DC fast charger within 150 miles on 81 (next one south is Bristol VA/TN and north its Troutville outside Roanoke). Anyway, the Rivian App, the Electrify America App, and the ABRP App all showed the Wytheville EA station as working and available. It is not, the entire Sheetz it is located at was bulldozed and fenced off. When we arrived we had 29 miles of range, and were out of luck. We got back on 81 and tried to make it to the Pulaski VA town office where there is supposedly a 6.6 kW charger (which would have given us about 8 miles of range and hr with the trailer, so we would have been there for 5 or 6 hrs to get enough charge to get home, assuming it worked). Unfortunately we ended up about 4 miles short, ran out of battery, and had to call a rollback tow truck to get us home. Luckily a friend drove down with his truck to tow home the trailer for us. Anyway, hugely disappointing experience with EA (expensive tow too...), hopefully the state of DC charging improves soon.

Just drove from CT to FL and stopped at 8 Electrify America locations along the way. Things were generally good at the first 7 along the way. I have a Ioniq5 awd Ltd and preconditioned battery before all stops. The 350 chargers were bad news. Only at one did I get decent speed of 180 KW, most others were about 50 kw. The good news is I never had to wait, and at one that had 10-12 chargers I was the only car there. The disaster came at the last stop in Brunswick Ga, where of the four chargers none worked well. There was one 350 that said it was derated to improve the customer experience - so I did not try that. The 350 that was working only gave me 25KW. Switch to a 150 and got up to 50kw but then it dropped to 25 kw. Finally after using that for a while I switched to the last 150 that actually gave me 100kw. All in all it took six sessions and close to an hour to go from 19% to 80% to finish my trip to FL.

Kyle, thank you for all of your videos. I’ve been watching you for well over a year! Waiting for my EV to show up! 13 months after ordering my Q4 e-tron arrived. Could you recommend a home charging unit for my car? Thank you!

Kyle, can you explain how you anticipate rate your charge being different than Plugshare?
@TheLastMoccasin Жыл бұрын
His is not owned by a charging provider ;)
@GregHassler Жыл бұрын
@@TheLastMoccasin what difference, exactly, do you think that makes? Plugshare has many years of data and is an app that can search locations on a map. A Twitter feed is about useless to another user.

As more data comes in, I hope you breakdown the numbers by brand and model of car then by type of charger to determine if a particular model is having to most problems at a particular charger.

We don't do many road trips, but we've done one particular route four times. (from mid-Atlantic area to eastern Tennessee). All of our away-from-home charging has been with EA. I've had some experience with usability testing: taking a serious look at the user interface. Unfortunately, I'd have to give EA a very low rating. On our last trip, we charged 3x on the way south and 2x on the way north; the difference was due to temperature changes. On our way south, we had to call EA's tech support folks EVERY time! The last time was at the EA charging location in Wythevlle VA (the one Kyle mentioned in the video. The support rep told us NOT to follow the directions on the phone app and on the charger unit. Those directions tell the user to PLUG IN FIRST. The rep said to initiate the session and then plug in. That worked every time! On our trip north, we charged twice and had no trouble at all. So.... EA's chargers are pretty good, but if the UI (User Interface) tells you to do the wrong thing, then the whole system flunks the usability test!!!😰

Kyle, as a stats guy, do be wary of selection bias in the responses. People MAY be less motivated to provide positive check-in reports than negative ones.

Tesla has been piloting opening their network to other brands here in the UK. I regularly see other types of car at the supercharger station in my town. Not sure how many of their locations are in the pilot, however.

Suggestion : On the google form need an option for "Did the smartphone charging app accurately reflect charger status?" EVGO auto charge. If you don't use an app.

The situation with Sheetz under renovation is also currently happening in Bloomsburg PA right now too. The whole place is fenced off. This EA station is a VERY important stop for anyone traveling east/west on I-80 through PA. Not many EV's can skip the Bloomsburg charger if you're traveling the length of I-80

This may not be popular with people others here - but here in canada - this and many other reasons I want a diesel plug in series hybrid. 75-100 kw battery will take care of more of my driving and the diesel for long trips or when hauling a trailer.

Love that you're doing this. My experience with Electrify America has been so bad. I average of trying 3 different stations per stop to get a successful charge. And on road trips in CA, EA is just about the only fast charge option. Goes to show, that more competition is needed for EA to improve.

You are the poster child for all EV. Especially in America. Thank you for this. We have evolved from burning whale blubber and it seems coal, oil, wood, and natural gas use might become things of the past. I wish I could see a hundred years into the future and see what is after batteries.

Not much better in Canada to be honest - wanted a quick top up recently after a long trip (had about 15% SOC) pulled in to a basically new IVY charge point and BOTH chargers were out. Screens worked, but sessions failed. Called IVY and the operator said both showed as being off-line, and she could not even connect to them. I was 5 mins from home so it was OK, but what if I was road tripping? This is NEW equipment! Mind blowing.

Great work, interesting results, hopefully you can expand this to other platforms to draw in more data. Be interested to see the industry's reaction to these results going forward. love to see what results would be obtained for the UK networks. Keep up the great work, love the information, learnt alot about EV's in the year wait till my car arrived.

the app inconsistencies remind me of the issues that airlines had a few years ago where their integration was so poor that passengers would get updates about cancellations/delays before the staff do. This has since been largely solved (with some exceptions, of course) - i love that RateYourCharge is pushing the efforts even further

Thanks for continuing to shine a light on a big problem. It seems what’s lacking most is some sort of organizing principles or vision that define how the EV infrastructure should come together. Should local utilities be the primary provider? Or the Tesla supercharger model? Or, a franchise model, like gas stations of old? This is where the Wild West/no rules approach we’re taking here in the US seems to result in wasted time/effort and a lot of frustration. National codification would certainly be a good first step.

There is an EVgo station by my house that has been down for at least 6 months and been reported multiple times. It is marked out of service in their app but you’d think they’d fix it in a semi decent amount of time but I guess not

Kyle, I hope you can breakdown the data further by region. In the past two months I have driven twice from Denver to Phoenix in my Taycan Cross Turismo and never had a single issue when using Electrify America chargers. By coordinating with the EA app and Plugshare app I never had to wait a second to pull into a working charger and hit 250kW charging speeds at nearly every location I used - including the new locations in Payson, AZand Showlow, AZ. I do monthly road trips to either PHX or Vegas from Denver in my Taycan, and have never been stranded, so I am curious to see if the Electrify America chargers here out west are more reliable than what we see in the southeast or in the north east.

Kyle -- Gosh, I have to think of "Out of Spec" as a KZbin experience -- yes, I want to see this kind of information in KZbin videos. So, "the more, the better." Can it coexist with the rest of the content on Out of Spec Reviews, or should it move to a new channel? What I would suggest is that "you can have one channel for 'vehicles,' and another channel for 'issues.'" And let me put it in this perspective: To a really significant extent, your "vehicle" content has been full of fantasy things that start around $75,000, and go well above twice that much. "There is no way that a massive amount of your viewers will ever be able to afford one of those vehicles." Meanwhile, anyone who drives a battery electric vehicle, or is thinking about getting one, or is worried about the horror of being forced to get one by government laws, will be interested in the "issues" involved -- including those laws. And especially about how on EARTH they're going to charge a vehicle, when they have absolutely no ability to "charge at home" -- like when they live on the third floor of an apartment building. So, yes, I can see you are "having the time of your life" with the vehicles, and that's perfectly OK. And it's fun watching that stuff. But as you continue to say things like, "celebrating the end of combustion vehicles," the rest of us are thinking more of the HORRORS that we might not even be able to afford the "electric future," as we get priced out of private vehicle ownership in the next decade. Or perhaps sitting in line for hours and hours and hours, waiting to charge a vehicle, should some company ever decide to make one without stuff like CFRP materials, massage seats, and so on -- can we ever get "just a car" for the 95% of the population that will NEVER be able to afford stuff like that? "Issues" can go far beyond "charging," all the way to the future of personal mobility. And that should be stuff that everyone involved in any way with battery electric vehicles should want to know more about. So, thanks for all you do, and please consider this as a vote for "Yes, we want to see more of this on KZbin." And, of course, "the sky is the limit" for the content you can produce in the future. You have been "off to a great start," so thanks again.
