I've been out flying the air 2 s, getting ready to do my non fanboy review of this drone. And unfortunately, I discovered the first thing I really don't like about this drone, a big step backwards from the Mavic Air 2. And in this episode I'm going to tell you about it.

Great review. I wonder if DJI will hear about this and do a firmware update to make it like the Air 2. I also wonder if the additional top two sensors are contributing to this change in autonomous behavior.

@@SW-Video I really hope they can fix this with a firmware update - the only thing I can think of to justify this is that the apas is safer this way. But 80 seconds to work its way around a tree? Not buying it.

Love the honest non fan reviews. I've no intention of "upgrading" my Air2 all the expensive gimmicks don't impress me that much. Look forward to the next part

DJI's mistake may have beenmaking the MA2 too good LOL. I'm really loving the Air 2S 1" sensor but it's a real question as to whether or not that feature is worth the extra $$.

Great Scientific Test! I found another important feature one might loose after sell Air2 to buy Air2S. "Ease of movie shot"!!! With Air2, users do not have to worry about focus, since Air2 is optimized to pan-focus(everything in camera get perfect focus). With Air2S, users must set appropriate focus on main subject(other things are out of focus), because Air2S is optimized to auto-focus(there is manual focus in Air2Sm, but manual focus in Air2S still must allow unfocused area). If users either forget about, or do not have enough skill to set, appropriate focus with Air2S, then they get disastrous footage, so risky.

Hey Jeff. I just discovered that the Air 2s APAS feature does not fully function in 5.4k resolution or framerate above 30fps. When you put it in 4k 30fps the APAS system works fantastic and dodges and weaves obstacles as it should. The 5.4k version will stop and very slowly moves around the obstacle as you demonstrated.

I saw the critter during playback and had to bring him into the script. My video description also has a disclaimer that no ground squirrels were injured in the making of this video. I really hope DJI will fix this issue with firmware. It makes no sense that they highlighted APAS as a feature with the MA2, only to gut its functionality with the upgraded drone.

Thanks, Chas - I'm really surprised no one else has caught this. Even if you don't care about how it used to flow around an object, the fact that it took 80 seconds to work its way around a tree is unacceptable.

I appreciate the thorough comparison of this feature. Was the Air2S in Normal mode, as opposed to CineSmooth, when attempting bypass? Bypass is grayed out when in CineSmooth mode.

@@JeffSibelius I since tested the A2S myself. APAS only works when in normal 4K or lower. It works pretty well in that state. So, basically par with MA2, in terms of resolution and bit depth. Insufficient software guardrails are in place when in 5.4K mode. The same sort of lack of info is seen when trying to enable subject scanning.

Jeff, this is Bill Callahan. You've helped me in the past & I really appreciate it. I have Yuneec Q500 drones. Question if you have time please: There is a USB type attachment on the CGO 3 camera at its rear. Is it possible to download video from that source & into a computer? I'm asking because a couple of real tyrants from another subdivision gave me a verbal beat down for operating my drone. I didn't know it but my drone was recording at the time while I was holding it in my arm. For some reason, the video and audio does appear on my computer by normal means but comes out as gibberish...all garbled. You can't make out anything, no video, no audio, just gibberish appears on the screen. Can you suggest anything like the USB I just mentioned? Thanks a million for any help!

Hi Bill - unfortunately, I don't think you can access the video files through the camera as you described, and I don't think it would be any different than what you pull off the card in the first place. You had the camera set to record audio? I'd forgotten the CGO3 could do that! If you can find a way to upload the video file to something like dropbox or google drive and share it with me, I'd be interested in seeing what you're describing.

LOL no, it's not a crash avoidance system. APAS is an obstacle bypass system. It's supposed to be a system to allow the drone to bypass an obstacle and as I dempnstrated, it doesn't always work for this. The fact that USED to also provide a mechanism for getting a shot you might not have gotten previously is an additional advantage -as I acknowledged - but the fact that it WAS available with the ma2 and is not now is a downgrade. It can't be called anything but that.
