===============
Several months ago I reviewed a product called DroneMask, which solves one of my greatest challenges in flying a drone - Drone Mask allows me to see the smart phone screen, even in broad daylight.
It had other advantages over solutions like Smart controllers:
- It was inexpensive
- It didn't go obsolete when I bought a new drone or an app got updated
- it worked with all my drones so I didn't have to buy multiple smart controllers
In my previous review I gave DroneMask a nearly perfect rating.
Today DroneMask 2 is being released and I got a chance to test this out. They've added new features to DroneMask 2; are the features worthwhile or are they gimmicks?
- Did it work? Does DroneMask 2 really provide a clear, bright view of my screen?
- Is the DroneMask 2 well built?
- Is the DroneMask 2 comfortable and easy to wear?
- Does the DroneMask 2 still fit over eyeglasses?
Watch this video to find out.

FYI - This product was originally called MagiMask. In 2022 the company rebranded the product to DroneMask. If you're looking for a DroneMask vs MagiMask video, there isn't one - it's the same product.

Hi Jim - thanks or your questions .. . I never had an issue with my connection when using the DroneMask, for a few reasons - 1. I always tended to rotate my body as I flew. So, if I was flying off to my right, for example, I tended to turn my body that direction. I never really thought about it, I just did it. So my controller was always pointed at the drone, even with the mask. 2. Flying to the side of the controller is probably not going to cause a loss of signal unless the drone is far away or there are obstructions. You might see some interference with the video feed, but flying to the sides when the drone is a safe distance away . . . I don't think that's going to be a problem. 3. Flying behind you could present an issue if only because your body could block the signal. But you shouldn't fly behind you anyway - it's just a good practice to keep the drone in front of you. 4. If you did lose that connection, your RTH should return the drone to you. Those are my thoughts - is there some other reason why you think the mask might interfere with control signal? I never even saw the video feed get degraded, even tho the phone is inside the mask. But my control sync was always spot on.

I have the original and like it but for some reason I don't use it as often as I should. Probably because I do have a Tripltek that works well too. One thing worth noting is the Evo 2 drone controller allows almost all functions to be controlled or changed right from the controller so while the touch screen is usually easier it isn't really needed for those drones/controllers. I don't think the Nano and Lite series are like that because they don't have a screen built into the controller. It worked well with a Mini 2 I have and I'm sure it would work well with any DJI standard RC-N1 controller. I'm going to try and use my Dronemask more often.

I'm glad you posted. Love hearing feedback from people who have used the DroneMask. I also have the Tripletek and it's great. It has advantages over DroneMask, but it's also a lot of money and it's heavy to lug around. So I like having the different tools for different situations. I've never been able to make the jump to Autel's built in screens . . . they're just too small for my old eyes LOL. I've tested the DroneMasks with a few different DJIs . . . I don't think I've used it with the Evos, but as long as the flight system uses a touch screen, it should work with the DroneMask.

@@JeffSibelius It takes a little practice to use just the Evo 1/2 controller. It's designed as a standalone system without an external monitor but I only tried that once for the same reason you mentioned. It's too small. My point was the Evo controller can, with practice, do pretty much everything without the touch screen functions.

Hi Chas! The Mini, eh? I just have never been able to trust the minis in wind. That's my big hangup with those drones. Otherwise, I'd love to have a Mini 3 to keep in my camera bag. I still haven't bought a Mavic 3. DJI really overpriced that system and I have no use for an underpowered 2nd camera on my drone. I gotta say, though, the Mavic 3 Classic really has me thinking . . . Have you been following the prices on the Evos?
@shsechas
@shsechas Жыл бұрын
@@JeffSibelius Yes I have been, but i want something more compact as the Evo1 is a monster. It's still been reliable for me and still takes nice videos. I for sure will keep both drones and yes..the mini's are an issue with wind, but did improve. That Mavic 3 is sweet, Even the Evo nano and lite is awesome.

@@shsechas hehehe if Evo 1 is a monster, you certainly don't want Evo 2 - that's like flying the old Yuneec Q500. I have the Evo Lite Plus and I really like it, but it's the same size as the Evo 1 I think. The mini's size is awesome for convenience.

@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised other reviewers didn't talk about the weight difference . . . for something you wear on your face, that seems to be a significant factor. I didn't think it would be that big a deal to touch the screen either. I have to admit though, I have found it to be very convenient. Things like smart shots or changing color profiles, things like that, require the screen. It's one of those things that, if you're used to DroneMask 1 you may not make use of it, but if you don't already own the mask, it's a nice feature to have.

After watching yours as many others, no one has addressed control antenna direction when Flying. I can see no problem to speak of if the drone is flying in front of you. But if the drone Is flying to the sides or behind you I would think you lose contact of the drone. I have had That happed to me many times if I was not paying attention to were the drone was flying In respect to where I was pointing my antennas. That seems like a big problem with this product?

Hi There Jeff, We are not allowed to use these things here in Australia C.A.S.A (Civil Aviation Safty Authority) say we have to maintain a line of sight with our own eyes no difference in my opinion I guess someone that has never flowen sitting behind a desk came up with this rule, but thank you for the review anyway.👍👍

The Drone Mask is just what I need. The problem is, that I have a DJI Mini 3 where the cell phone needs to be inserted and connected to the controller console. I don't see a way around this. Maybe someone may have a solution.

I have the original MovieMask. I wear contact lenses, and have trouble focussing at close distance, like a lot of people 40+ years. If the Mask had just 1 cm more extension, it would work well for me. Sadly, I don't see any difference between mine and the v2, in terms of optics.

I can't speak to the MovieMask, the original version of this device. I don't know if the lens changed at all from MovieMask to DroneMask 1 to DroneMask 2. The issue you describe is a deal killer, though. If you were located around Dallas, TX I'd let you try the v2 to see if it was any different. I'd be interested in your thoughts, so I can respond better to others who raise your concern.

I've read where you need to fly your drone by line-of-site. With the DJI Mini 3, when that drone gets 400 or 500 yards away, I lose sight of it if I take my eyes off it. When it's that far away, I don't know which direction it is heading unless I look at my phone which is nearly impossible to see in the sunlight.
