That is a funny story. I remember the first time I got to a medium level facility in the federal system. It was the first stop on my jail journey. The first stop was the hole, that was a hell of a first impression, but I was onboard for the ride. It was crowded and they had us two to a cell. My bunkie had been down for a while, and was mad about the treatment and threatened to light the joint on fire. I am thinking I am about to die and I just got here. He assured me he wasn’t but couldn’t be soft on the guards when making demands. Anyway, I get out of the whole after about a week and they transfer some folks to their designated jails, so our group is now on the compound. As soon as I get out of the hole, I see a dude from my neighborhood. I am literally still in cuffs and shackles moving to the unit and I see him. He sees me and we exchange greetings he was Dominican though, so the language barrier was obvious. A friendly face is like gold when you hit the compound, so it was appreciated. The C.O. Said “you know him” i said “yea”, right hand to god, he said “he’s trouble”. I said in my most sincere voice “well sign me up for trouble”. That was the welcome to the federal system. At that same institution a few days later they had a riot on the yard and dude got smacked with a weight, needless to say, they shut everything down for several days. Then I got moved to the Big House, Lewisburg Penitentiary, castle Greyskull. Went through R&D there and they had a murder on the compound and kept us in there for over 8 hours while they removed the body and got those dudes locked down and then eventually they got us situated. So you’re 1000% right as a new person to prison you are immediately exposed to unimaginable horrors and atrocities. It don’t wait for you to get adjusted or acclimated. It’s straight to the stuff that you will begin to encounter as part of doing a bid. Keep schooling these people about what happens in prison and maybe some of them will listen, cause it’s not a place for most people to experience and live to tell about.
