Real life railroads did (and do) get nicknames, or alternate titles that fit their acronyms. Obviously in the CoS universe the "East Salida & Denver" is the real company, but colloquially known as the Eat Shit & Die. My headcannon for this video is that someone working in the car shop painted that as a joke, and then nobody noticed (or cared) before it got returned to service. All just adds to my immersion haha

Yall are creating the game that every steam locomotive engineer has dreamed about for YEARS. A game that they can mess around with and test things without the risk of breaking something or injuring anyone, and one that will simulate the trains ACCURATELY. I think the cursor change, and highlighting of the hovered object, should be configurable to the user's preference. I personally prefer the highlighting, similarly to how Derail Valley does it. But I know some of my friends do not like the outline or highlight solution and would prefer the minimalist crosshair solution.
@seymoarsalvage3 ай бұрын
I 100% agree, as sometimes I like the highlighting to show how that particular mechanism works. But I also love the clean and simple cursor change that doesn't busy up the screen for every thing I touch. I'm torn lol
@KidarWolf3 ай бұрын
@@seymoarsalvage I agree. It's also an accessibility thing too, if you can't see well enough to see the change in cursor, being able to use the highlight instead will help you to be able to still enjoy playing.
@markmalewski3 ай бұрын
I completely agree! I definitely prefer the highlighting, and my close friend prefers the crosshairs (or both) and we have said the same exact thing, about wishing it was configurable so we could “enable” crosshairs or highlighting or both (or neither). When making videos, it’s nice to have neither. But while playing I prefer highlighting, but after a few days of playing (or a few hundred hours of playing) I think crosshairs might be fine, but I really wish / hope that we can choose (in the menu system) and choose / select / enable / disable “highlighting / outline” and enable / disable “crosshairs”. That way we can have either option, or neither option or both or whichever we prefer. Personally I prefer the outline / highlighting solution, but maybe after playing a few hours and becoming more familiar and comfortable with a particular locomotive then maybe I would consider switching to the minimalist “crosshairs” solution, but PLEASE give us the option to choose “outline/highlight” (enabled or disabled) and “minimalist / crosshair” (enabled or disabled) and allow us to enable or disable both. I can see use cases (such as tutorials and just getting started) where highlighting/outline is DEFINITELY preferred (myself included) but I can see how others with more experience with locomotives and more hours in the cab of a locomotive might like the crosshairs or minimalist solution, but PLEASE let us choose which we prefer to use in the menu system. Please and thank-you! 🙏❤️❤️❤️

I think a reasonable compromise would be the new cursor system, but with directional arrows showing the potential movement of whatever is being hovered over. Highlighting is a bit clumsy and "game-y" IMO.

As an real life engineman I'm really looking forward to this, but I'm also glad that you're also going to allow the player to play simply to avoid minimising your market. This is important because most players wouldn't understand that it takes years to properly learn how to operate a locomotive and gain train handling skills.
@cranberrysauce613 ай бұрын
personally, the changing of the cursor looks better and doesn't break immersion as much. but i think being able to highlight an object should still be a toggleable option. as it can be a helpful learning tool for those not as familiar with the true workings of the engine, granted i dont know if highlighting should be on by default or not.

This is seriously looking awesome already. And I cannot wait! Having watched through, I can agree with having the ability to toggle cursor highlight, it would be really helpful. Talking automatic brakes, are we talking straight air, self lapping or something in between in this video? As a tramcar/streetcar motorman I'm familiar with straight air, it's what we have on our operating Christchurch trams at my museum, and why my one time driving a railway locomotive (1923 boxcab electric doing a light test run) the driver had to cut out the self-lapping function on the loco brakes so I could run it as a straight air brake. With the way you guys are going with this, I'm kinda thinking now this might be a really good tool to help me learn and figure out self-lapping stuff before I get to try it IRL. 3:22 OK, we've seen ES&D flats and now boxcars, so the one question I've been dying to ask... ES&D explody bois when? 11:56 I see what you're doing there Mark... cheeky little nod to Mickey McGowan and Smells Like Kenosha?😁 31:48 Hyce school of switching, class is in session and today we're learning the art of the spicy 'dunk' with the bois. Heya Hyce, nice to see such detail on air brake sim. Are you modelling pressure propagation down the line? How about leakage from aux reservoirs and cylinders? Is that tied in with car maintenance? I recall you were very pleased with Railroader's HUD for showing brake status. Will CoS have similar observability features for player QoL as an option? You talked about different engineer brake valves. Will you also have different varieties of control valves on the cars? For the Derail Valley Air Brake mod I implemented the classic Westinghouse "Plain Triple" and the later K-type control valve, so I'm curious what sort of detail you're hoping to achieve in that respect.
@_Studio3463 ай бұрын
Good to see you here, my friend! Pressure propagation is indeed modeled. Leakage will be tied in with car maintenance, yes, though, as in real life, it's usually quite slight. We're working on HUD ideas. We're going to simulate the control valves the best we can. We already have several different types of K's in. With the era of our equipment, we're not liable to get much beyond K's (and their friends that function almost identically) and AB's in a few rare cases, but I plan to simulate them all. :)

I'd like to see a highlight option that shows the two extremes of a lever controls. So in the case of the Air Brakes, two yellow 'boundary' lines repersentives the minimum and maximum rotation of the control, a dot at the pivot point of the device and maybe a curved arc at end of the level or semitransparent field connecting those boundary lines. This would give someone like me a visual indication of my 'percentage' rather than having to look at it. This, highlights on controls and curser change could all work together, with toggles and the ability to modify the transparency of the highlights. Lastly, you could add this suggestion to valves/hand brakes by adding a circular or split circle highlight around said control. It would becomes more or less transparent as you rotated the control, with the left side getting more visible as you turn the valve counter clockwise, and to the right when you're going clockwise.

I really like the "quality of life" feature of the text at the bottom so you can see where your automatic break is set. In Derail Valley, it can be hard to tell where your break is at and it always seemed like the transition was always too close together and easy to overshoot where you want to set it.

suggestion on the highlights : giving folks a key that when pressed , does give things the ghost outline while you hold it, and stops when you let go or possibly as a toggle , in case you cant find the interactable to prevent a pixelhunt on trains with more knobs / handles / etc then you program for actual use.

Really cool stuff. Airbrakes/draft gear with that level of realism I have not seen in any other train sim that I can think of. Airbrake simulation is huge. As a conductor on a tourist railroad, during the off season, I feel this might be kinda helpful for being able to more accurately simulate conductor tasks, like airbrake manipulation / coupling/uncoupling and switching is actually kind of nice as it allows me to try and simulate real life situations on the PC during the winter when we don't normally run to help keep some of the procedural stuff fresh in your head. Curious, I see the draftgear has slack action, as you know you frequently need to "bump" the pin to get it to release, will that be simulated in the game at all when its closer to finished? Also, if you do something like leave both knuckles closed and bash into the train, will the pin not automatically drop and make you look like the clown conductor? :p Either way, super cool stuff, again can't say how excited I am for this game! Keep up the good work!

Love the crosshair system! It makes it look like you're not playing a game quite as much, and more like you're actually running the engine. I also find the new chuffs to be much better than the old ones. I do have one suggestion; to make the moving around of windows and doors smoother, I would change the animation so it starts moving slow, quickly gets up to speed, then slows down again before it reaches the next position, if that makes sense. It looks unnatural when things have "infinite acceleration", in other words they're suddenly moving when they just barely weren't (you have to apply a force to a door IRL to open it, and that causes an acceleration, then you must decelerate the door to stop it).

Florence & Cripple Creek box car, I have one in G Scale from Bachmann so it’s nice to see one in the game.

Fantastic as usual, saw this on the patreon earlier so it’s nice to see on KZbin now. Question, I notice that the train charged rather quickly when Mark lined all the cars in. Is because narrow gauge equipment charges faster? Or is the goal here to truncate these things to make wait times less taxing for the player.

this game has really is going all out on everything... I haven't seen a game with this much open compatibility for people to either play it casually or play it as a sim since the Silent Hunter series!

Being from the east, I don’t know my western birds, but was that an American robin and some sort of western wren I heard singing throughout the video? If y’all modeled specific pine cones, I wouldn’t be surprised. The new chuffs sound a lot better, too! Thank you for the update.

Spicy coupling, Dutch drops, entering corners too fast... yeah, I can tell the "train" part is coming together 😄

Any plans to model an 'Armstrong' interlocking tower - I'm sure there are bean counters in the head shed looking at the personnel costs to do all of the yard switching and mainline switching with fewer people. And there is a wise acre in the safety department waving those US&S catalogs around talking about how an interlocking will keep the guys from throwing the wrong switch combination for the 'Fireball Mail,' she comes through. Not to mention those long stretches of track where a token occupancy system would cut down on 'cornfield meetings.' Great job on all of the detail stuff and the effort to model brakes and couplers.
