This deeply moving series draws on their unique archive of two hundred interviews with the last survivors of World War 1 filmed over the past twenty-five years. Vivid and heartbreaking stories are told by the last Tommies - filmed in their nineties and hundreds - recalling life and death in the main theatres of war like the Somme and Passchendaele. Part 3 tells the story of the terrible battles of 1917 and 1918 and how Britain and her Allies turned a looming defeat into victory. In essence, the series looks at the dramatic, emotional, and transformational impact of the Great War viewed through the extraordinary experiences of the last Tommies.

Coming home from war was the most terrifying part. I felt for sure that the plane would crash or the bus would crash or something would finally kill me. Their hatred of the German Nation came at a heavy cost the good British! There was every good reason, for there to be the strongest bond of friendship between these great nations. When good battles evil, it is one thing, but when good battle against good, a great tragedy looms.

If we lose freedom today than what did those before us die for? Individuals even TODAY are incarcerated around the world because of their stand for freedom. Will you make a stand? My love and thanks to all that have served freedom inside or outside of military service. Thanks can't cover the depth of my feelings. May God bless all who serve freedom and may He preserve freedom. my maternal grandfather, in the BEF, was at a side battle of Passchendale, at St Julien. where he won the military medal. during a lull in that battle, he drove his ambulance though the german front line, into the german rear and ordered the german guards who had a batch of wounded british prisoners, to put them inthe back of his ambulance. (he spoke fluent german, though with a slight Welsh accent) and drove back. his captain, was angry, as he had been ordered not to do it, (means he may have done it before) and he underwent Field punishment no.1. but when the Commanding General of his sector , General Castor, heard about it, he sent a thank you note and a military medal.
