The system of the five elements was used for describing interactions and relationships between phenomena. The 5 elements are Jin (metal), Mu (wood), Shui (water), Huo (fire), Tu (earth). Each element has certain characteristics and qualities, which are used to classify all phenomena including seasons, climate, taste, color, sound, emotion, and internal organs.
According to the five element theory, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood are related to the human body organs, namely, heart/small intestine, spleen/stomach, lung/large intestine, kidney/urinary bladder, and the liver/gallbladder, respectively.
In T'ai chi ch'uan, the five elements are used to designate the different directions, positions, or footwork patterns such as forward, backward, left, right, and center.
