The Five Golden Rules of Tennis
Here are the five golden rules of tennis. These are not rules from the tennis rulebook, where to stand, how much time you get between points, etc.
These are the five golden rules that tennis players should follow if they want to become better, more consistent tennis players that ultimately win more tennis matches. Download our FREE tennis guides here - www.top-tennis-training.com/f...
Becoming a better tennis player takes practice and dedication, however, knowing what to focus on is almost like a shortcut to success.
Follow these five tennis rules for rapid tennis improvements:
Golden Rule One - Tracking the ball at all times. The most important aspect of tennis, yet the most neglected by the vast majority of tennis players.
We all know we should watch the ball properly, yet it's the first thing that goes out of the window when we get on the tennis court.
We focus on the opponent, we focus on our own strokes, yet neglect the main thing - to see the ball properly at all times.
This means that you're tracking the ball coming off the opponent's racket, seeing the ball cross the net, seeing it bounce on your side, seeing it rise up to your strings and seeing the ball come off your racket. By tracking the tennis ball properly, you'll hit the ball much cleaner, be quicker to react and move to the ball and feel better on the tennis court.
Golden Rule Two - A cardinal sin when playing tennis is holding your breath. When we hold our breath, our bodies will get tight, will get tense and will get tired much quicker than if we're breathing properly. The ideal way to breathe on court is to inhale when preparing for your shot and exhale prior to and during the contact point.
By doing this, you'll help keep the muscles relaxed but you'll also have more energy on court and be able to play at a higher level for longer.
Golden Rule Three - Consistent tennis wins tennis matches. The number one rule of any tennis match is to be consistent. Too many players fall victim to the hero syndrome. They go for too much, they try to blast the ball, they go for the lines, basically they defeat themselves by trying to play amazing tennis. Don't be a hero on court, be consistent.
If your opponent breaks down before you, you'll win the match.
Golden Rule Four - Eliminate the obstacles. There are two main obstacles on the tennis court, the net and the lines. We can eliminate both by playing with good net clearance and by hitting with good topspin. The net clearance will eliminate the net and the topspin will get the ball to dip before the lines.
Golden Rule Five - Play the percentages. On the baseline, this means hitting around 80% of your groundstrokes crosscourt. By hitting crosscourt, we gain three major advantages:
1. The net is the lowest in the middle. In singles, the net should be 3 feet in the middle and 3.6 feet at the singles sticks. That's a six-inch difference.
2. We have much more space to hit into when we hit crosscourt. If you aim down the line and hit the ball slightly late, the ball will end up in the tramlines or beyond.
If you aim crosscourt and hit the ball slightly late, the ball will end up in the middle of the court.
3. We reduce the amount of space we need to recover before the next shot.
When approaching the net, aim most of your approach shots down the line. This will help you position yourself properly to cover the down the line pass.

As a coach I am a big fan of consistency. Placement is more important than pace. A medium pace ball that lands consistently two feet from the baseline and pushes your opponent towards the side line constantly during a rally will draw more errors or short returns. Every shot you hit should have a placement, purpose and variety of spin, net clearance and pace.

More great coaching thanks SImon. I've added these to my own personal training plan. If I analyze my practices & matches, I do all of the 5 rules 'casually' but I never make a point of actually concentrating on them. All the coaching in the world isn't going to make me a better player if I don't have a plan to build it into my game so that's what I'm going to do later today. Too bad KZbin doesn't allow - 1 Thumbs-up for ordinary content; 2 Thumbs-up for good content; 3 Thumbs up for great content. This would get 3 T-u's from me.

Greatest obstacle on the court is not the net or weather conditions or the opponent but in actuality your own mind. So much of the game is mental whether you are far behind in a match or close to victory.

I have realized that during the first set of the game I'm more or less able to remember some of these rules, some technic tips, etc. But later on, I'm "mentally" too tired to still be focused on all these elements. @@bigchainring1977 Actually, I did well. I returned plenty of balls and tracked teh ball, did correct breathing, etc. but seemed like my care not to over hit caused some lack of pressure on my opponents. Also, I play doubles with various partners and my partners was also hitting weaker shots which led us to be on the defensive, too often. So, played OK, but didn't win. Call it a learning experience.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Personally, i'm really bothered by physical problems that come one after another. I managed to cure a tendinitis in my achilles heel, i managed to stabilize a defective knee with a proper knee brace, and right now i'm suffering from, - Golf elbow, - Tennis elbow, which I experienced briefly during my last recreational match. I've been treating myself for a week with rest, massages and some specific movements i found on youtube. Now it's getting better, but most importantly, i was able to identify why it happened, and it's because of my service move. You probably know what i'm talking about, (I'm right handed) this right/left rotation of the forearm to hit the ball. So if there was a lesson i would like to see on your page, it would be "The least aggressive way to serve", or "An efficient serve without forcing". I don't have any physical problems during my exchanges. It's just my serving action that causes me to get golf elbow. Thanks for your reactivity :)

Excellent video as always Simon! I always appreciate your free, high-quality tips. You're like the tennis coach I can never afford. Question: When is the ideal time to strike the ball? Should I take the initiative to hit it just before it gets to me, or should I wait the extra half-second or so for it to approach me and let it come into my racquet?

In terms of timing, if you move up to make contact earlier, you’re taking away time from your opponent but also yourself. On good days, I’d prefer players move up, but on bad days, you can always give yourself a bit more time to adjust. All the best Simon

There are many high percentage plays, it’s hard to go over them all but for example with the drop shot, maybe think more about going deep down the line off the drop shot and using it as an approach shot. That will allow you to finish the point off at the net. All the best Simon

I’m still pretty quick around the court, and compete well against guys mostly in there 20s & 30s, but thinking it might be time to stick to doubles. Will try harder to strengthen things up. Either that or the knackers yard! Anyway thanks again for yours and Alex’s great advise. I would add two more to make it 7 golden rules: one is footwork. If you move well good things happen. Number two, dont overthink anything.

Don't you have to ask "why do players have such difficulty consistently watching the ball?", and/or watching it correctly... it could be poor eyesight, poor concentration or whatever but are there techniques/drills we can use to assist with developing this skill? Thanks, I really enjoyed the video. Rich

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial ok so I didn’t expect this, but as you asked and I have been back tracking and catching up on your earlier posts, how much does mindset affect performance? And what are your tips for concrete? (Sorry if you posted this previously I just haven’t got to it yet if so)

If the world worked like “you don't watch the ball all the time until the contact point, you miss it”, I'd have learned to track it by now (or given up playing). The unfortunate part is precisely that you still can hit the ball without tracking it. Not the same shot as if you were really watching it, but...

Actually, the five are: 1. Stay low and centered throughout play. 2. Return to center of court generally after hitting a rally ball. 3. Split step as your opponent is contacting the ball. 4. Remember what your weapons are and exploit them. 5. Explode up and forward on all serves.

Can’t agree with that. They are good, but you can’t make contact if you don’t watch the ball. Staying low works well on low bouncing courts, you shouldn’t stay low on clay. Cheers

Sorry, but 'watching the ball' isn't really helpful advice. Better to se the entire court situation and position of your oppoenent. Staying low and centered works on all surfaces, especially clay.@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial

Coach, can you tell me about the grunting culture a bit? Why it became so popular? Even with regular shots (no cannon power) people moan and grunt... Is it help that they think they are Nadal or something? :9

I tried, many years ago. Gave up in 2007, my situation was messed up. It came down to either working and paying my rent so I didn’t get evicted or continue to hustle from week to week with no money and sleeping in bus stations 🤣

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Yeah, you kind of have to be born wealthy OR have a sponsor to really have a shot at the men's pro tour. It is very competitive, the men's side with thousands of great players; you can be a great player and still get knocked out in the first round! Then, you win zero money but still have the expenses to pay. Trying to make it from the distant continent of AUSTRALIA makes things even worse; the travel expenses dwarf those from other locations. P.S. I love Barty's game.

Most players aren’t. They know they should but don’t know how it feels to be totally zoned in on tracking the ball properly. Try it, you might like it
