I've been saying this for years: It's really embarrassing that a corporation which primarily focuses on developing high end, high performance game engine fails to create a launcher which can rasterize a few dozen of 2D UI elements on modern RTX GPUs and modern 20+ thread CPUs at more than single digit framerates. That's something even PS2 era hardware could do smoothly. There's really no excuse other than laziness.

Thought for a minute you were talking about the engine. But yeah, the launcher is absolutely abysmal. I have no idea how they even managed to make it run that terribly. It's honestly impressive.

This is awesome! It's bafflng how a company like Epic can have such a slugglish launcher as they have. Sometimes it stalls half a minute for me when I start. And every click feels like it takes 1 second to be processed. I guess most clicks need to make a request to their backend and wait for a response before the client is able to load anything else.

Haven't had any trouble with it honestly. Maybe it's improvements of the past few years but with decent hardware you should be alright. Like with every complex and very large tool there are project specific settings you can use to improve it. But especially builds after the first one should be pretty quick.

doesn't work, the Epic shit installer won't even install, now I got this asset manager and it can't install UE5 either because it won't even show me any options in the download list how FUCKING hard can it be to provide some software without being forced to use their stupid garbage
@azaelsergal

Looks like a great tool! Also just a note, but the EG Launcher also has a vault management but it just doesn't sort them by downloaded, there is an option called "Remove Local Content" to delete the vault cache of each asset pack (not plugins though but they don't take that much space). I wish the EG Launcher had a collections feature to group packs of assets and batch download, or batch update... But hey, FAB is coming later this year and it might be better, right?
@gamefromscratch
@gamefromscratch Жыл бұрын
The problem with Remove Local Content is finding all of the things that are installed. If you could just say "show me only installed content" then life would be grand! But when you've got a few hundred assets like me, slowly scrolling through them to find the installed ones is frustrating and time consuming.
@azaelsergal

What kills the launcher is the network data use. If they can make it offline and only request data when loading details of packs in the marketplace or store it would be 10000xs faster.

wellm and here i was expecting a tool for blueprints removal, in to a plugin or in to oblivion, debloating of engine code, decoupling Gameplay Framework from engine, save assets with a ".meta"-like text file like unity or godot does instead of dealing with them as a binary, unify actors and component in to a single entity like other humane engines do (unity, godot, etc), but alas. Sadly i never used launcher to begin with as my game uses engine from source

take all the thumbs! It's surprising this isn't considered more of an issue. I'd love to be able to run a query of some sort.. maybe sql.. but in reality an advanced search across the assets and/or their descriptions.. which might be scraped from the marketplace. I just want to be able to find 'trees' or 'anime' trees would be easy, anime would be from the descriptions area of the asset.. and.. well, being able to 'folder' these things, and maybe the folders are dynamic, so 'anime' folder would have anime things including anime style trees and trees would just be all trees.. so.. dynamic search folders I could set up and maybe run an update against every so often to update the content in each folder (it doesn't have to be live)... just dynamic. ;-D maybe... creating some kind of XML file that holds info for each asset, and then search and dynamic folders based off the info in that file / those files...

@@igorthelight it works the same on my 2016 Macbook. people just like to hate epic games for no reason because it's trendy. Almost all of the loading for the store stuff is done on the servers not locally. the epic launcher caches the data so once you load a tab after a cold boot of the app it will be instant, otherwise it has to fetch data like images and other stuff from the server which can take a few seconds. Epic is still improving it even further though.

On my HP Omen laptop (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H, RAM: 64 GB, GeForce RTX 2070 Super, Win 10 Pro) I've never had any UE crashes with both version 4 and 5.x. The only crashes that I've encountered are well known bugs that are not fixed yet even in 5.2 -- if you connect another monitor and it has different resolution and frequency than the monitor where UE runs -- UE will crash, especially if you are in material or blueprint editor screens. The fix is simple -- you need to configure your monitors to have the same resolution and frequency. After that -- no issues at all.

Epic game launcher take so many resources that it's feels like it's packed with a bitcoin miner. PS : If you check only : at beginning of the month, or in the "free for the month" category, or the first few pages of the "free" category then, you are doing it wrong (temporary free asset can pop on page 47 for 5 days as long as it has been created a while ago).

That's useful, but I really hoped it had something to do with adding C# support to the UE5. Blueprints are cool, but they often turn into literal spaghetti and an intermediate language between crash- and pointer-hell prone C++ and Blueprints (that get really hard to maintain once they get complex enough) is needed.
@TheVideogamemaster9

C# will never be performant enough for a lot of hardware, and Unreal is a popular choice for stuff like the nintendo switch. Even 2D Unity pixel art games can't maintain a solid framerate with low-end specs. And I've done lots of tests about this, where games like Stardew Valley (C#) struggled to render on my performance-checking laptop without constant audio crackling and slowdown, but games like Shovel Knight (C++) ran perfectly.
