Definitely a shrinker/stretcher. The way you’re doing it is mint but if you’re wanting to achieve it in one piece that would be your best bet combined with what you’re already doing. I was told that there is no wrong way to panel beat, but there is a right way. Looking awesome either way man! Keep it up

You may want to check out o spinner and stretcher and a benchtop English wheel

@@austinniemela Yeah, shrinker/stretcher and a slip roll. the slip roll will get it into a rough shape like what you were doing with that large socket, shrinker/stretcher to fine tune it. With the stuff you're doing, a bead roller would also be a good thing to have.

@Make it Kustom shows a lot of inexpensive tooling and ways to shape metal, definitely worth a look. That said, you always find a way to make all your projects look amazing and I really appreciate your attention to detail and the pride you put into everything!

I absolutely love this build. I grew up working on my dad‘s FJ40 and this brings back memories. Every part of this build has been so well done. Please don’t put those latches on the front tho!!! All of that pretty work, and attention to detail, and then putting a big blocky latch on the front hood/grill. What about flush hood pins? Could you have them come off of where the radiator mounts to?

A few ideas come to mind for tooling. KZbin: 3D Printing a Lamborghini Aventador; 3D Printing Our First Car Parts; KZbin: Runge Cars demonstrates how to use panel shaping rollers; KZbin: Multiplaz welders use alcohol/water for fuel, FarmShow wrote up a review submitted by farmers on the Multiplaz which welds copper sheeting, iron, removes its own weld?, cuts, and I think it welds aluminum, maybe a video on it welding stainless steel too.

You aren’t alone with the alignment issues with the body gaps. I too am building a 40 series and cut the first rear quarter out without any bracing thinking it’ll be ok until I tried the rear doors (Bj40) and the gaps were way out to the point where they were too tight and wouldn’t close properly! The panel wasn’t welded in luckily so I was able to get it where it needed to be and then the bracing went in prior to cutting out the other side. Nice work getting it sorted!

@@austinniemela I learned alot about shaping metal tricks from Make it Kustom, Fitzee's Fabrication, and The Fab Forums and they seem to be metal working tools that every body worker needs in his shop, another tool to get would be a bead roller and a set of dimple dies.... i watched most of your jeep build and you probably already know more than i do but in the event that you dont, youd probably wonder how you got so far on this build without some of these tools at your disposal. im just a random guy on the internet and im not gonna pretend to try to armchair fabricator for you but i hope it helps lol... btw i love this fj build you're doing awesome with it

Just cut the little 2-in section of metal straight down below that edge where you put the square and then pull the top of that inward and then reweld and fill in the little pie shape at the bottom

If one didn't come off the vehicle. May have to add a hood spring so the latches have pressure upwards so they won't undo. Just something to keep in mind while adding finishing touches.

6:20 ... I have an fj40 and had another one. There are no spacers behind the hinges there. The headlight bezel, however is supposed to be spaced out by about 3/16". I use vacuum line spacers behind it on slightly longer screws.

The tool you are looking for is a shrinker and stretcher and I like using a bead roller for different radiuses.

Shrinker/ stretcher, a english wheel, though, for a body with little or no curves or compound curves its not needed. Honestly doing the way you did is a honest way to do it.

I’m a jeep guy and I honestly hate those hood latches. I don’t like the look and after a while the rubber pieces wear out and the latch doesn’t stay tight at all. The JL OEM style latches are 100x better. They just have a much better design and look much better in my opinion. Should have done something custom and made your own!

English wheels are also very good for shaping sheet metal into pretty much whatever you want, takes practice but once you figure it out they're amazing
