The HD 660S2 sits as the current flagship headphone of Sennheiser's 600 series line. Now that I have the opportunity to examine the HD 660S2 in a controlled environment rather than just on a showroom floor, we can critically examine what unique properties the headphone adds to the 600 family, and answer the question of if it deserves the flagship crown that it wears.

Very nice review, and I can fully agree with everything you mention, for the most part. My Sennheiser affiliation began in 1998 when I plunked down nearly $500 to buy the HD600, an ungodly amount of money to spend on a pair of headphones I thought. But I wanted a GREAT sounding pair and at the time they were as good as it got. I splurged on them because I was working a second shift job at the time and returning home each night at around 12:30 am to a sleeping wife. I couldn't turn the stereo on with her next door. So in 1999 my wife and I had a child, an autistic son, and one day as he was about to turn one and was just on the verge of learning to walk, he pulled himself up enough using my roll top desk to get his meat hooks on my headphones, which I had failed to put up out of his reach. By the time I discovered them missing the next morning they had wound up in the bottom of the dishwasher, apparently he had taken them down the hallway while crawling and caught his mother off guard with the door open. It didn't turn out well. I didn't buy another pair of 600's until about seven years ago but I currently own the 600/6XX and 660S2. I love them all but at this point the S2 is my favorite. By far. I'm 62 years old now and I find the elevated upper register very pleasing, not at all sibilant or overbearing. I get the sense that it helps to eliminate the notorious Sennheiser veil. The top end sounds so much cleaner to me. The mid-range has always been the star of the show with this series but with the bump in the bass of the S2 I find the overall presentation more enjoyable, more complete. You're right in that there is more information being presented. I use a Burson Audio Conducter 3 Performance combo on the solid state side, along with a 1st gen Woo Audio WA6 doing tube duty. My current tubes are a Sophia Electric Aqua 274B Rectifier and a couple of GE 6DR7 Black Plates and the S2's just sing. Beautifully. They are exquisite. At $600 they are quite spendy but open-box will set you back $400 or so, that's what I paid. If you're a fan of the Sennheiser line the S2 might be right up your ally. It's a different sounding headphone to be sure but that's not a bad thing, Not at all!

This is the best review of these headphones I've seen. I have and love the HD600/650 (before the design reboot) and got the HD660S2 just a few days ago. They are AMAZING headphones and they sound SO good. One thing I wonder about though if you can confirm this is if Sennheiser changed something about the earpads from the older models to this one because it feels much firmer to me. Could be because they are new of course, but yeah ... the the old pads feel much softer to me. Maybe they made them thicker/firmer for the sake of the sound signature?
@MasterMarslander
@MasterMarslander 7 ай бұрын
Very kind of you! I have a newish HD600 that I've played with when testing the HD660S2. The pads are very similar in firmness. The more you use them, naturally the softer the pads become. So I think it's just a wear in period you need.

I just got the HD660S2 as well. An upgrade from my HD58X by a mile. Absolutely loving these and they have dropped to $399 on Amazon currently. I read that the change in the pads was to make them last longer? I guess time will tell with these. They split time with the Apos Caspians that I got a couple months ago.

A year or two ago, Sennheiser changed manufacturer/supplier for their earpads. Compared to the pads that they used to use the new ones are are firmer and a bit deeper and also have a clear film layer on the back of the pad. I have both types of pads so I know for sure the differences. I prefer the current pads.

Just a point of clarification that the 660S2 drivers are NOT the same as the older HD580/600's or HD650's. They're current gen drivers that have been voiced to sound /similar/ to those older headphones. Eric Palonen from Sennheiser addresses this directly on post #85 "Dive deeper into legendary sound. Let’s meet the HD 660S2" on Head-fi. Otherwise, great view-thorough and thoughtful. Love it!

Great Review i have all HD5 and HD 6 line and u are very correct, But i have to say that Drivers on HD660S2 are smaller than 600 and 650 yeah they have the red coil but is also shorter and honestly it has more common with 660s driver , on 660s blue coil is also 38m also short and also use the same air metal filter behind , also even that 660s2 are 300ohm in reality they drive power is closer to 660s than 600, 600 need way more power than 660s2. About sound ? HD600 the most neutral and vocal friendly, 650 the smoothest, 6xx the darkest mid bass , 660s the fastest best imaging and soundstage , and 660s2 are warm but not warm like 650 or 6xx that the warm is from mid bass , 660s2 are warmer compared to 660s or because of mid treble , also 660s2 have the most low bass and 6XX the most High bass .

These certainly image better and sound clearer to my ears then the HD650. Also with certain tracks, the 650 could sound shouty in the mids, whereas the 660S2 didn’t. Now before everyone jumps on me and talks about amping, it was on a rig that compromised a Bryston DAC into a WA23 Luna.

Hi, great and interesting video, I recently bought the 660 s as had very good deal of £259 as the s2 came out, I tend to use mine with my ifi zen v2 dac, with the true bass button selected which makes the bass alive , but I have done recently the custom cans mod for the 6xx, and does improve the lower end of the bass, I see that s2 doesn't come in the nice hinged box and now that the cables are now 1.8m -6ft cable as in the 660 S has the 10ft cable . I did notice that the ear pads on the s2 looks thicker than s1 and my 6xx which are 3/4” 20mm. As well as the 660s It’s like my old hd575 has 1” thickness pads . Regards mark

Right now the HD660S2 is on sale for the holidays for $399 new in the US, so I'd maybe see if you can find a similar deal before jumping on a refurbished set. If you don't see anything better though, $450 isn't a bad price at all. I don't have any experience with the Fiio K9 ESS at the moment.
