As a teen I was invested in trying to craft my own super-speed hero and one of the rules I came up with was they had to build up speed. Dodging a gunshot you just noticed in real-time while you were calmly standing still had low chances of succeeding. Also this made operating in tighter spaces like average hallways of a building or a single room limited.

@@dr.cheeze5382 that's still even the smaller stuff. 😅 I also had the rule that the "super speed" was a time warping effect that would cloak his body and any material he physically interacted with. This helped with certain scenarios where physics are important, such as: - Him reaching the speeds that would normally have serious external effects do not occur, such as sonic booms. - If he for whatever reason hit a wall or some other object while technically moving for instance at 100 km/h, the force he and the object would be affected by would only be that of what it would've been based on his natural speed without the time warp. - No matter how quickly he hit someone, the effect would only be that of his normal punch. This gave incentive to gain and sustain physical fitness. Though with enough speed, even average hits can overwhelm the best fighters. - He could not do the usual "HA! I simply grabbed your bullet out of the air"-trick or its like. The moment he in-super speed interacted with the bullet, his warp-cloak would affect it and the bullet's speed would adjust, most likely instantly tearing through whatever part of him touched it. So COMPLETELY avoiding projectiles was CRITICAL. Also what tempers all of this further is that your cognitive functions don't adjust equally. The levels of observation you'd have when running on a road compared to the same exertion plus warp-effect are not the same, a sort of tunnel vision forms and grows with the speed. So he should never attempt complicated tasks while in high super speeds.

Top from Undead Unluck is an interesting version of this. His power is to negate any forces that would slow him down, causing him to accelerate unstoppably until his “shape changes”, i.e. he breaks a bone. In fact, he is physically incapable of slowing down until this happens, able to change direction if he has something to kick off of but unable to lower his speed. To attack someone at lightspeed he basically had to have someone else distract the opponent while he ran all the way around the world to build up enough speed. And as to be expected, it utterly destroyed the target. Pretty fair example of superspeed with understandable drawbacks.

The secret reason for Flash in the comic books not seeming like an idiot for failing to capture some of his enemies immediately amounts to a mutual understanding. His rogues know he could kick their asses going all out, so they don't do major harm to people, and hope to stash whatever they've grabbed before Flash catches up so they can make use of it later. The exceptions are the people who are genuinely lethal, or who have XYZ thing that makes them hard to beat. Those people Flash genuinely has to go all out to fight in the comic, just like any 1v1 with a kryptonian or other godlike entity. Yeah, Flash messes around in the comics, but that's because he has the leeway to with his Rogues. If one of them ever screwed up and went too far, they're likely to soon realize how much freetime effectively infinite speed gives a man to screw them over, so they don't, and he doesn't need to treat them as anything more aggressive than a rival competitor in a sport. He'll beat them, but he'll banter, he'll let them have a chance, and he will check in on them while they recover. It's a fun sense that they can go with with an effectively godlike character, which doesn't really work well with the almost Superhero /detective vibe the Flash CW series gets.

Honestly that seems stranger to me from a moral standpoint, because the flash effectively has the power to de-incentivize any crimes committed by people who can’t directly rival him, which would make central city the safest place on earth. He doesn’t have the same limitations as other heroes do in that he can only be in one place at any time in real time, for obvious reasons. He could mop the entire city clean of crooks and therefore crime in what, days? Less than that? Having him establish some kind of gentleman’s agreement where crooks are allowed to commit crimes against innocent civilians as long as they’re not _too_ mean about it just makes Barry Allen out to be either too extremely lazy to stop crime, or morally bankrupt enough to get some kind of amusement or entertainment out of letting criminals get away with a slap on the wrist. How is that a hero? Barry Allen in the CW show is an idiot, but at least his motivations are still with actually stopping crime. His excuse is that his intelligence is poorly written. Because a lot of Flash comics, not all of them, but a good chunk of them, are in general more light-hearted and simplistic in terms of moral implications and seriousness of threats, in other words, they take themselves less seriously and focus more on interractions and antics rather than major stakes, which contrasts the overall more serious detective approach the CW show takes, where villains are more consistently (oh, the irony of using that word fpr a CW show) aggressive and the situations are consistently (again, irony) treated as serious threats. In-universe, the mutual understanding between Flash and his rogues exists between Flash and his more honorable rogues who have proven themselves smart and honorable enough to be trustworthy on that regard. That and Flash's genuine attempts to redeem his rogues (some of whom have even been successful) also contribute to Star City being significantly less infamous for serious supervillain crimes than Gotham and (occassionally) Metropolis, despite in theory having a similar amount of supervillains. I'd also show that as far as I can tell, comic Barry's treatment of his rogues has been consistent, whether it is their usual lighthearted shenanigans or situations where Barry actually is serious and takes down threats as quickly as possible. I guess it all ultimately comes down to tone vs implications and how much you are willing to accept the concept of that mutual understanding.

Ya know... In Season One, the CW could've easily used the argument that he was learning to master his speed to explain some of his random punches and moves where he suddenly dips out of Flash Time... It'd explain why he dashes at some people, but then suddenly slows down and throws a normal punch; however, this goes out the window when Barry fights Thawne, and he's forced to be able to go against the Reverse Flash.

Actually, now that I think about it, if they weren't so insistent on making Barry faster with every season, and played their cards right, they could randomly nerf and destabilize his powers in the first few seasons. Season 1, he's learning to use his power. Season 2, he has the "yips" in the beginning, gets back into the swing of things, then loses his speed to Zoom and when he regains it, it's unstable. While fighting someone who is speed-doping, and whose also steadily losing his power, it becomes less a fight of two speedster growing stronger and stronger, and more Barry trying to regain control. Season 3 and the Flashpoint snafu can EASILY throw his power out of whack at first. The endgame isn't even a speed vs speed duel with Savitar, it becomes a battle of wits (with a few dimwits, yes), and as fast as Barry is, Savitar is faster, by definition. They could EASILY have Barry doubt his abilities and have him underestimate himself and the fear of losing Iris could cause him to stumble with no real recovery, until the final battle--after Iris has been saved. Now that history has been changed, he gains the resolve to not allow it to happen again... Problem is... Season 4, onward, there's REALLY no excuses... The Thinker isn't a speedster, and every weakness CW comes up with, Barry can provide and amplify. Without grossly overpowering The Thinker from the start, Barry has no reason to lose. "Oh, but Barry was driven mad by the Speed Force in the beginning," And came to his senses immediately. That said, you could argue that the radiation impacting the "Bus Metas" was the Speed Force, and that their powers could be passively sapping at Barry's and making them stronger, and that was part of why The Thinker not only wanted all of their powers--nullifying Barry--but also why he wanted Barry to face them all, so they get stronger as he gets weaker. Then argue that Team Flash would figure out how his powers were being nerfed and find a way to re-amplify his powers--changing the wavelength, for example, so the "Bus Metas" can no longer passively draw from his Speed Force, preventing them from getting stronger, preventing The Thinker from also getting stronger (since by this point, he'd be inside one of them), and allowing Barry to just grow stronger. Since he'd no longer be sapped by the "Bus Metas," he'd be "ripe" for The Thinker to steal his powers. This is the point where we're finally at Season 4's climax. By the end of Season 4, he could be just a LITTTLE faster than at the start of Season 4, and The Thinker could be aiming to take his body. "But you said it made no sense for Barry to have trouble with The Thinker, yet you gave a scenario where it makes sense!" Yup, 'cause in the beginning of Season 4, until The Thinker bodysnatches the first "Bus Meta," his body wouldn't be affecting Barry, meaning until Barry starts fighting the other Metas, he is hitting The Thinker with full power, and The Thinker has NO counter to this. It'd give a reason for The Thinker to stay in hiding, though. Season 5, onward, I don't think Barry has ANY reason to be nerfed or limited... The last season, though, he'd definitely be at max power fighting the biggest bad...

DC hits this problem a lot with their more powerful heroes (Supes, Flash, etc.), where they have their ultra-powerful near-God basically just *letting* the villains get further and further along in their plans. This is probably why Arrow (at least early seasons) grabbed a lot more people into it. Ollie's good, but he's still got human limits, so sure, badass with a bow, but he's not bulletproof. Ollie even brings up the point with Barry, that as Flash, he can literally insta-case every area he every goes into, then demonstrates Barry's lack of thinking, by one of the better scenes with, shooting him with two crossbow traps that Barry didn't bother to check the existence of before he charged in. No S1E1 Barry, I cut slack. He's *doesn't* know his limits, or how much he can really do on anything more than an academic/trial and error level. The problem, is that he never actually gets much better at it in the course of the overall series. He makes a couple bad decisions, hesitates on Marden.... alright, it's his first villain, fully understandable. But he's still doing that crap all the way through the series.

Another issue with him "not knowing his limits" though is... it's super speed. He has super fast thinking and movement. He's not out catching criminals 24/7. One single day of training would basically account to multiple months of training. Of all the super powers out there, it's the one where this argument honestly just straight up makes the least sense. As soon as he figured out how to activate it in a remotely controllable manner, he should've pretty much immediately mastered it over the next couple of days. Because super speed basically functions like time dilation, which means he has a LOT more time in each day to practice than other superheroes would. Basically.... Barry's just stupid.

@@AtomicArtumas Where I cut slack on this is that you have do still have to have the idea to use the power in a particular way. Like, yeah, he knows he's super fast, but doesn't grasp phasing, because why would he? It's less about speed of thought, but lateral thought, which isn't actually sped up. But yeah, he repeatedly keeps making the same insane mistakes throughout the series. I'm not counting "Let's try to talk this down" parts, that's fine, it's a moral argument, and he's a hero, the basic resting point is that he'll try to de-escalate first. However, even in later seasons, he just keeps running straight into the middle of traps that he could have EASILY avoided if he'd just consider the concept of traps being a thing. You can't even put it as Barry being an idiot, it's literally where you can feel the bad writing. Like, Deadpool is a bit of an idiot, but it's part of his character. Captain America constantly tries to punch his way through problems, but again, that's just habit, not terrible writing. Flash gets repeatedly trapped by writing that feels divorced from the very universe they wrote.

Like for example when it comes to his fights with captain cold the writers could have made it so flash was losing his speed/energy before that so he's better of a match to him, like for example by reverse flash stealing his speed in secret by sneaking in some sort of device in his suit (pretty sure something similar happened in season 2), flash needing food because of his super metabolism etc. They also could have made it so captain cold's gun doesn't just slow flash down when it hits him but that it slows him down even if he's close to it. With the guy who could clone himself the writers could have made it so he had multiple clones of him throughout the city doing crime shit and a lot of them so it's more challenging for the flash, and with the toxic gas guy maybe make it so the exact moment before he is hit (even at super speed) his reflexes make him turn into that green gas again and so on.

Many people with energy power, depending on hox it works could work against flash, like doing some energy field, or AOE blast and things like that. @@jorge2555 Barry is normally pretty friendly and tries to help everyone (including helping talk down criminals if he can) that is true to cannon the issue is that 9 times out of 10 the writers don't know how to make anything interesting so he'll dodge a bullet touching his goddamn skin but then get hit by a punch, arrow, lightning, fire, or whatever other bs the writers feel are apparently fast enough to not only catch him off guard but also hit him before he can react to it. Edit: also would like to point out in many universes the rouge gallery for the flash actually carries a pretty large amount of respect for the flash to such a point that many try to avoid killing as a whole both of innocents and of other speedsters. Course in many newer works this is completely ignored as it both lowers the stakes and makes them fighting the flash and doing crimes as whole rather redundant, but there are still quite a few instances of the flash either working with his rouge gallery if one of them goes to far or them going out of their way not to kill him.

Multiplying man should be the easiest one to create a reliable escape plan for. Just make his clones expendable, like whenever he wants to he can have just disintegrate and keep their memories. Then have him never reveal his true body, only sending his clones to do the dirty work. So, he robs a bank, Barry arrests the clones, saves the people, and recovers the cash and then the clones just poof and a different crime is committed the next day. Maybe you could have team flash do some digging and track down MM's expenses and locate his main body. Maybe you could have him convince one of the clones to defect. Maybe you could have such that in order to know what's going on MM has to be nearby watching. Anyway, it counters Barry's speed well enough that he could win if he weren't stupid.
