The Flood of ’93: Then and Now - A Living St. Louis Special | June 18, 2018
The Great Flood of 1993 was unprecedented in size and impact in St. Louis and much of the heartland. Twenty five years later, is the region better protected and better prepared or have important lessons been ignored?

Having been born on the Illinois side of the river in 1944 I have experienced flooding as a kid. I moved away in 1959. Like Hurricane damage and river flooding..why build so tight on the beach and on the river. Let space be there for water to do it's natural thing. There should never be building in a flood plain nor close to the waters edge on the beaches. Just my thoughts.

I always wondered that too. I understand that commercially, economically, farming etc needs to be right there, but as someone's prime residence? I'm baffled.

Never, EVER say that there would “be less damage and we’d be better prepared.” Mother Nature has a way of dealing with that level of arrogance.

I was in the flood of 93 I was 10 years old. We lived in apartments off river Des Peres. We had to leave in a boat and had one bag. We were instantly homeless. We stayed at coral courts motel the last week it was open then no home. FEMA gave my mom 600 for me and my 2 brothers that’s it 600 dollars

Aside from the damage and the house floating away when the levee broke and all the other "whoa, this is Biblical in scope" stuff the thing I remember most was how much people cared and came together to help. It was trendy to go help fill sandbags. A group of my family went, somewhere I still have one of those cans of water A-Busch provided when they actually turned production cans into water to donate like something seen in WWII. It was mostly all in vain, but people tried.

Boo hoo for st Charles and St. Louis counties. I was living in Foley and Winfield in 93 and it was the very worst of the entire flood in those towns. Some houses could only be found by their tv antenna.
