The Panthers have been one of the more unpredictable franchises in hockey in the last eighteen months, with a sudden shift towards analytics, an embarassing situation involving a taxi, and a sudden shift back to what they were doing before. It all reads as a total gongshow.

I live in South Florida and am a Panthers fan. The attendance problem is not related to stadium location AT ALL. Everyone I know wanted the Marlins to build Marlins Park NEXT TO the BB&T Center. Nobody wants stadiums in Miami because of access to the city. Driving there is worse than any other city except maybe L.A. I had to leave the home run derby before the final round or else I would have been stuck in traffic and it would have taken over an hour just to leave the city. Marlins Park is already close to the edge of the city. There is nowhere to build a stadium in Miami anyway. The BB&T Center is right next to the Everglades and is in the middle of 4 mostly upperclass suburban areas, Davie, Plantation, Weston, and Sunrise. It is a 10 minute drive to the arena from any of those places. It is also pretty close to downtown Fort Lauderdale and downtown Miami. About 30 minutes from Fort Lauderdale and without traffic, it is 45 minutes from Miami. It is also next to Sawgrass Mills, which is the country's 2nd biggest mall and is a huge hangout for high schoolers everywhere. Sometimes teens are hanging out at Sawgrass and decide to walk over to the arena and go to the game. The Panther's problem is a lack of interest in hockey. For instance, whenever I see them play the Red Wings, the stadium is packed full of Red Wings fans. Hockey just isn't popular here. There are only 2 ice rinks within an hour of the arena. Nobody plays hockey in South Florida.

It's ironic how only a few years ago the Panthers actually were a laughing stock of the league with constant underachieving, no round wins in more than 20 years, and unability to even make the playoffs...and now some people in comments acting like they are the same only because of getting swept by the Lightning like nothing just happened...except of bulding a cup contending roster, winning the Presidents trophy and (finally) a playoff round? Ok real talk now though, has Florida ever had bad goaltending? Like, Ever? You can go one and on about the management's failures in every other category, but I'm hard pressed remember a time where their #1 goalie wasn't holding down the fort in a respectable fashion. It's hard to argue with great names like John Vanbiesbrouck, Roberto Luongo, and Tomas Vokoun, I remember them being a joy to watch back in the day cause they would stand on their head like nobody's business day in and day out. So even with all the other failures we can talk about, I'm genuinely impressed that the crease is an area they have managed to keep pretty steady. Now if only they wouldn't botch up the team everywhere else.

Not to mention they look like they'll continue to be stuck in the mud with Chris Paul's trade to the Houston Rockets for a bunch of mediocre players (some of which were already waived by now), a late first round pick (because we know how consistent Houston's going to be), and cash considerations combined with the fact that Blake Griffin & DeAndre Jordan alone won't be enough to move the needle for them and the Clippers were too little, too fucking late with getting Doc Rivers (a normally fine enough head coach) out of his front office position to do anything right with fixing it up properly. All I can say to them is enjoy being in the basement of the NBA in five years' time once Blake & DeAndre leave while teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves, the L.A. Lakers, and even the Phoenix Suns rise up to take control as the new top bred teams of the Western Conference/NBA. Maybe by then, you can have a new star to help bring promise to your team again, unlike in those Donald Sterling years...

I actually had a soft spot for this team since I went to Florida and saw them play against the Canadiens during that record breaking regular season. In fact, that was the game the Panthers needed to win to break that record (which they did). It's just too bad that ownership f***ed this team up not long after. Edit: The fact that they made it to where they are now 6 years later is truly astonishing.
