THE FLOW HIVE - Harvesting honey is easy

The Weedy Garden

2 жыл бұрын

There are a few steps needed to harvest honey from the flow hive. I check for bugs and make sure that the queen is doing her job by laying eggs.
Having a Flow Hive means that you are committed to being a Bee Keeper. Looking after the bees so that they can pollinate my garden is the most important. The honey is a sweet reward.
Extra footage courtesy of the Flow Hive people. Have a look at The Flow Hive on my website www.theweedygarden.com/the-fl... and get a $50 voucher from their shop.
Sweet dreams

I love what you’re doing weedy. In these niche communities sometimes you get people who are so opinionated about what’s right or wrong or best, honestly it’s a bit toxic. The fact you’re keeping bees and enjoying doing that is just awesome and it’s a motivation for others looking to get into the hobby. The same can be said for the other pursuits on the land. Keep up the good work.

I know from my grandfather to immediately rub the stung place with dirt, so it covers the smell of bee poison and not attract other bees. Plus it helps with the pain ;) Yesterday I was stung by a wasp and I rubbed it with worm castings and it worked wonders.

Wow, you. Did a great job for a first time around. I have 4 hives and they were all relocated. 2 from old tires, 1 from old ice chest someone threw out onto my mom's property, and one hanging in a mesquite tree. I have never requeened, so they are still africanized. Smoke is your best friend around bees. Next time when you are inspecting the brood chamber, you may want to smoke between the boxes, and set frame #1 to the side. This will give you more room to work, and less chance of rolling/harming the Queen. But you did an excellent job 👏👍. Working bees is very exillerating, and it's always a relief when the deed is done. There's nothing like homemade honey 🍯😋!!!!! My Lord sure does make awesome creatures 😍💖

Thank you for the inspiration of bee keeping. I did not know it was simply a couple plugs and a screw to release and harvest the honey. Im sure back in the day it was much more tedious. I almost dont want to build my future garden without the glorious pollinating Bee.

I have never seen anything like that. A piece of art. My estimation is, a regular bee hide (double) might cost 250 $ without legs, this one has to be about 3000 $. * I missed only one thing : the role of the two boxes. I guess, the racks will be rotated .... or not :)

So beautiful... thank you for this in depth and entertaining video. Bee's are amazing creatures and there are numerous health benefits to consuming honey, as well as bee pollen and royal jelly. An excellent book to read about all of this is "Honey nature's golden healer" by Gloria Havenhand. I originally read a copy of the book from my local library, but found it so fascinating that I bought a copy for my own personal library.

Dr. Adam Ingrao is a master beekeeper and entomologist in Michigan. I was in the 'Hives for Heroes' training he founded, and asked him about the Flow Hives. He called it a modified Langstroth hive with a toy attached. Sometimes bees won't use the Flow Hives because they are plastic. Just an FYI for those thinking about Flow Hives, which are quite expensive compared to Langstroth hives. Keep up the great work!
@TheWeedyGarden
@TheWeedyGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Pros and cons with both. The plastic is ONLY in the super. They make their own brood combs
@Paula_T
@Paula_T 2 жыл бұрын
I agree RRUnicorn. Also they apparently don't work well in cold climates, because the honey does not flow well enough. I much prefer my top bar hives. I can remove a whole comb and process it elsewhere and not upset the girls.
@shanewaters592
@shanewaters592 2 жыл бұрын
If you use a standard Langstroth hive you need a honey extractor, which will cost a couple of hundred dollars minimum. Which isn't needed for the flow hive. So for 1 hive there isn't much price difference overall. However with the flow hive you miss out on harvesting beeswax.

Hey mate, great video, great content. Just a slight comment though, the stuff you removed from the inner cover is not propolis, it's just wax. Propolis is what seals the inner cover to the super (well not only that but you get it, it's what seals each part of the hive with the closest part of it). Also don't throw it out on the ground neither propolis not wax, it helps parasistes/unwanted guests locate the hive with the smell and it's also a shame to throw it out when you could scrape it and keep it to make something out of it :) Also when you harvest honey, use less smoke, just puff once where you need to put your fingers then let the bees take the time they need to go down. It's not because you use more smoke that it's working, it's because you take longer to do it. Your honey will taste like smoke if you use that much :D Keep up the great content! Cheers from France.

Keep the propolis, it has medicinal uses :) A suggestion for anyone wanting to get a hive: look into top bar hives instead of these kinds - it’s a natural method of beekeeping and a lot less fiddly. Harvesting honey away from the hive is better, too.

Yeah. Look into all these things before you even think about getting bees. And also learn about bees before you get a hive. Flow have some very good tutorials to help you get a good understanding before you get your bees. There is a method that suits everyone ;-)
