Hi Katie, you are a very talented flute player with a beautiful sound and refined technique. Thanks for all posts on instagram and now here on KZbin. Every tip from professionals like you are very useful for those who want study properly the flute. By the way, congrats for achieving your MD at Julliard, you are amazing! Currently I am living in NYC and consider a new flute from FCNY. So, could you please compare a Muramatsu GX versus a Haynes Q2 versus a Powell Signature versus a Miyazawa 402? I apologize to bother you with this request, but I wonder what these flutes are able to perform and only a qualified professional like you could extract the maximum beauty of these great instruments.

Just my opinion: The American Haynes is the big exception because of their advanced forged key cup technology. Haynes plateau keys are lighter & the forged silver is not as soft as cast keys and thus keys tend to stay in adjustment longer, despite their adjustment screws (which you should never touch on the Haynes). Drawn tone holes, pioneered by Haynes, are both more durable and more stable than soldered tone holes. They also do not need resoldering after 50 years of service as the soldered tone holes frequently do. The most resonate flutes tend to be plateau in the Haynes line with thick walls and made from the early fifties to the late sixties, the so-called "golden age" of Haynes. Exactly how Haynes got that "golden age" sound was a well-kept secret. Powells had a clearer projecting upper register and a slightly more stuffy sounding low register than the Haynes. Technically speaking, flutes made of less expensive nickel-silver brass can be just as good or even superior to all-silver flutes. Indeed Louis Lot ("lewy low") instruments of the latter half of the 19th century are often prized and priced far more than flutes of the modern day--although that is wrong-headed to me. My most memorable sound experiences are with golden age Haynes Y key cup arm plateau flutes with a C foot. (It was Galway's first instrument.) A "special model" by Haynes of the early thirties resounds with a modern silver Powell headjoint as well. And oddly, my daily player of deep resonance is a 100-year-old brazen Sion-Chapelain body & foot again with a modern silver Powell head. Ferdinand Chapelain and later Sion-Chapelain succeeded Aine et c, the very first maker of modern flutes.

Dear Katie, If you wish to progress from being a just another Julliard School of Music graduate onto being a principal flautist in a major world symphony orchestra or an internationally famous flute soloist like James Galway, Jasmin Choi or Denis Bouriakov then you will need to demonstrate your memory skills to us all. Therefore, I challenge you to learn and play from memory the first movement of any famous flute concerto in two weeks. Also, to show us as your viewers the process you went through to achieve this result.
