As far as I am aware, I have seen every sci-fi movie from the 1950's that I thought had a chance of making my 'keeper list'. I believe my two personal favorites from the decade are The War of the Worlds ('53) and The Fly ('58). To me they capture the best of that time period's science fiction, and avoid its ridiculous worst. Of course any modern viewer who is looking for things to mock at will find them, but IMHO in their condescension they are missing a couple great stories with something to say. There are other flicks from that era worth taking in if you're not too sophisticated to enjoy good clean fun: Invaders from Mars (1953), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), and The Time Machine (1960) to name a few. : )

I love the 1958 version with Vincent Price. The climax that sees a housefly with a scientist's head trapped in a spider's web, only able to shriek "Heeeeeelp meeeeeeee!" in a tiny buzz of a voice is very memorable and one of the most recognizable sound bites from movie history. 1958's The Fly was a significant box-office hit, and like many science fiction films of its era has seen many shout outs in pop culture in the decades since. For example, The Simpsons, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, MST3K, Rifftrax, and others have reference The Fly. Even in the movie Beetlejuice, while trapped in the Maitlands' model, catches a fly, which screams "Help me!" as it gets dragged down to be eaten. Good video breakdown and comparison! Keep up the good work.

I think the remake blows the original out of the water and awesome dissection of the two! I prefer Cronenberg's remake because I love the way the transformation was done, seeing Seth gradually change through different stages made it more tragic and scary. Also, having Jeff Goldblum as the lead was the icing on top in my opinion, because he is so good at playing scientists in films and he really makes you feel for Seth's predicament and his chemistry with Geena Davis is so endearing and believable.

I prefer the 1958 version because it has that scene where Andre tried to transport his cat Dandilo through the machine and when the receiver was empty, we could hear it's cries disappear away into the ether, to which he says "Oh....Dandilo" with overwhelming sadness. It's still kinda disturbing even now. Oh and the lady who played Andre's wife is beautiful.

Fact: Al Hedison wanted the fly head transformation in the 1958 Fly to be a step-by-step metamorphosis in spite of the huge amount of time he would spend in the makeup chair, but the producers thought it would be too gory.

Both the 1958 and 1986 versions have good things about them. I watched the 1986 version first. I'm a huge Vincent Price fan like you so that's a given for the 50s version. Even in a supporting role, he delivers a hell of a performance. I definitely enjoyed the 80s version considering I'm fan of David Cronenberg and Jeff Goldblum. Definitely more gruesome out of the two knowing Mr. Cronenberg's work. If there's one thing I definitely liked about the 1986 Fly is the progressing mutation of Seth and how more gruesome it becomes. I love both versions of the Fly and consider both classics in their own right. Another excellent video and analysis, Anthony!

The love story in the remake really just puts the movie over the top for me. It's so beautiful and yet tragic. I like both versions of The Fly (58 and 86) great buildup great scare factors and great climatic endings. I'll tell you a little story about the original 1958 Fly movie. Back in the mid 90s a relative of mine poked fun at me with that infamous ending where the human head fly in the spider web screaming in a eerie high pitched voice "Heeeeellp Meeee!" Before I actually saw The Fly for the very first time in 2010. Along the way before that, A couple of friends of mine even my middle school teacher who shares the same birthday as me used to poke fun and aggravate me with that "Heeeeellp Meeee!" Sound lol. I tell you, I seen that fly screaming in that spider web, I could not get that sound out my brain and it took me a few days to overcome it, but when I watch the part where Vincent Price is about to sit down on the bench in the garden and that huge web and the high pitched squeaky voice came on. I run out the room. That Help Me scene creeped us out, scared us to death, had our skins crawl, and we NEVER forgot that scream after we all watched the 1958 Fly movie once upon a time. I'm 37 and that scene still leaves a high pitched buzzing noise in me.

Hey Chris, yoo are not alone in that feeling. I have heard quite a few people mention how much that moment really got to them. @@FeverDreamlandTheater thanks. The high pitched voice Heeeeellp Meeee in its sequel "Return of The Fly" sounded like a 4 year old child more than a horribly sounded "thing". I like both versions and would be hard pressed to choose one over the other. But there are two points that few seem to notice about the 1958 version. First, when Andre's brother (VP) is about to walk into the lab where he finds the door locked, one of his guesses as to what his brother has invented is "Flat Screen". Yes, flat screen TV is hinted at back in 1958. I wonder how many in the audiences of that time knew what that was in reference to. But the second point --- and this is an important one --- is that the legal argument to get the wife off from murdering her husband could not possibly work. In the first few minutes we hear the press come down two times. But what's really damning is that in front of witnesses the night watchman also claims he heard the press come down two times; therefore suicide is ruled out. Also Price's claim that the stroke count was off due to him not resetting it would fly in the face of the watchman's testimony. (pun unintended)

@@FeverDreamlandTheater It's interesting when old movies like 1958 original are viewed through a 21st-century prism because too often the results are unfairly (if somewhat understandably) skewed in favor of the more modern version. In this case, it's the comically high-pitched voice "Help me!". Okay, but this is an imagining of what it would sound like if a man's vocal cords were shrunk down to fly size. In the context of the time the movie was made, I think it works. What I think makes it less funny is the tone of the voice is similar to the pitch heard when a fly is buzzing around, only with a human voice instead of the buzz.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baPPY5-sds6CnJI I've noticed a failure for younger audiences to grasp the wide gulfs in special effects from then to now. I recall reading a remark about how stupid it was in "It's a Good Life" for Anthony to be making the grownups watch a TV show the observer took to be for kids because it had a couple of claymation dinosaurs fighting. What that person missed out on and what made the scene ten times more terrifying is that he was having them watch REAL dinosaurs fighting because back in the day claymation was how dinosaurs were depicted, it was a state of the art effect at the time (see "The Odyssey of Flight 33"). It's ridiculous to expect Jurassic Park-level (or any) CGI back then.

Hey, Anthony! The Fly remake is one of my favorite horror/sci-fi films. Ironically, it's one I remember when I was a kid in the 90's. I thought Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum were SO excellent in it. Although I hadn't seen the original, I remember my mom showing me "fly glasses" at the Discovery Channel, and mentioning the iconic "Help me, help me!" quote. Hey D! That's true, in both cases, the scientific discovery never reaches the world as the story shifts focus to the tragic transformation. Incredible video Anthony!! This is so cool, and your breakdown is insightful and engaging as always. I haven’t seen the original, but I’d love to watch it soon. I’m a huge fan of older sci fi horror. I just bought The Blob criterion and am going to watch that soon too!

I prefer the original. What ruins the remake for me is the way it ends--the last few scenes. It just begins to feel laughable (part-telepod?). The remake does have some good ideas & might've been more passable if it hadn't gotten so ridiculous at the end. I guess what's ironic is that Vincent Price & Herbert Marshall had a tough time getting an acceptable take of that climactic scene at the end of the original, with them staring at the spider web. Apparently, they kept breaking up into laughs. They finally got a good take &, as a viewer, I never found it funny or silly at all. Guess you had to be there. Anyhow, thanks for a fair & even assessment of both versions.

Hey Laust, thanks so much for the watch & comment. When I was researching the original Fly I saw that account about Vincent Price and Herbert Marshall being unable to make it through the take. Most people who I've seen speak on that iconic scene found it to be disturbing. Anyway, be well!

Absolutely amazing! Totally loved this! Must must check out the original Fly at some point - something I still have to do - but absolutely love the remake - it`s a classic in it`s own right! :) Terrifying!

Fantastic review and breakdown Anthony. The fly and the remake are both belters. I think the 80's one is better but the original is more entertaining and fun. The 'yuk' factor alone stops me from watching the The Fly 86' that often. Shame Cronenberg so readily abandoned the genre in the 90's. Take care bro👍🏼👊🏼.

Heeeey wassup Vas! Thanks for checking in bro. I hear you about the gore factor in the 80's version. In that sense, the 50's version is the one to revisit. Have a good weekend!

I've watched the original film from 1958 the other week which I thought was a brilliant movie but also pretty terrifying and emotionally distressing especially the part where the fly with the human head stuck on the web getting eaten by a spider and screaming with a freaky high pitched voice "Help Me!" I know it terrified a lot of people who have seen it but for me, it really fucked me up even as a 21 year old adult. I couldn't sleep until like 3am as I was worried I was gonna have nightmares about it but luckily I didn't. Then more recently, I've just watched the 1986 version today with Jeff Goldblum and I really enjoyed it, one of the best sci-fi horror movies I've ever seen! Now that I've seen both of them, I have come to the conclusion that I most definitely prefer the remake from 1986 because compare to the original, the remake seems less terrifying and has more tragedy than just terrifying effects in my opinion, I know some people might disagree with me and that's fine. But I do like the 1986 film better because they had special effects which I really love with the fly transformation and the story was emotionally gripping. I did enjoy the 58 version, it's just that some 50s horror films don't fit well for me, I'm more of an 80s kind of person with the remake. 80s horror is the best for me.

Hey Louisa thanks for the watch & comment. Believe me, you are certainly not the only one who feels that way about the infamous human head on the fly ending. It's creepy. I'm also more of an 80s kind of person too overall, there's so much nostalgia there for me. Anyway, be well and have a good week ahead.

Cronenbergs version is ok but like most post 1980 science fiction and horror relies to much on blood and gore and special effects to keep you interested.

The Fly (1986) is much superior than The Fly (1958). One of the few good movie remakes ever made.

Dude that was a fantastic episode :) I adore the remake, it's such a powerful and depressing story, the practical effects blow My mind. I've never seen the original but I need to change that :)

Hey MMS! Yeah I recommend the OG too, I know I discuss it here, but there's still so much to enjoy and appreciate when it comes to that classic. It does not top the brilliance of the remake but it is worth a view. Thanks for the watch & have a good weekend bro.

Hey Chris! I dig that idea. In my review of Carpenter's 'The Thing' I discussed the original 'The Thing From Another World' a little bit and the 1938 novella 'Who Goes There?' by John W. Campbell. But at the time my voice was a mess so I mainly focused on the 80's adaptation. That said, I always did want to compare and contrast the original movie and include some of the fun trivia related to The Thing movies in a separate vid, so that's in my plans! Much thanks for watching, be well & have a good week ahead!

@@FeverDreamlandTheaterWhen and if you do a critique of the original "The Thing from Another World" (which is the correct full title) I always thought it strange that the notion of the creature at large is never considered an escaped specimen that the pilot or crew of the crashed ship picked up for examination, and not the super-intelligent builder of the craft itself. That would even explain why the ship crashed --- the creature broke out of its containment and killed the crew.
