One of the best HO scale oil refinery dioramas I've every seen, and that big scratch built tank, loading platform awnings, and LED lighting really make that section of your layout seems so believable, and immersive.

@FlyingCrow Fren, I use odd stuff too. Took years but I trained my Wife to be on the lookout for odd shape stuff for modeling. She's really good at it too,lol. I built a Spherical Oxygen Tank out of a 12" christmas ball. Needed tanks for justification of BLM cryo cars,lol. Love your modeling. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing your work and ideas. Helps us all make a more realistic railroad.

Thank you for this video! I'm using it as a reference! Awesome ideas for your scratchbuilt tank! Good point on the loading rack arms too. I think I won't worry about keeping those free-swinging either. Won't be surprised at all if this scene shows up in an article in one of the model railroad magazines. Outstanding work...you should be proud!
@FlyingCrow22 күн бұрын
I really appreciate the complement. Out of all of the refinery structures, those loading racks were the biggest headache. LOL
@KandWRailroader22 күн бұрын
@@FlyingCrow I agree with you! I've built two so far and they both ended up being "test models" so I could learn how to fix what's wrong with them! However, I only need to build five total, not the crazy, but awesome number you built! I've considered just getting rid of the pipe included with the kits and trying to find styrene tubing instead. Did you consider/try that? It would make it a lot easier to do a single run of pipe rather than trying to glue them all together, plus they wouldn't interfere with the walkway supports.
@FlyingCrow22 күн бұрын
That's a great idea. I never thought about doing that. I guess the only headache in doing that would be the three distribution pipes that come off of the main pipes, because they have to line up with the overhead brace. There are so many pitfalls on this kit. Walthers really needs to address the design.

Awesome refinery
@FlyingCrow22 күн бұрын
Thank you!
@steve87thpsap21 күн бұрын
Nicely done. The little shack could be the control pipe building for the tanks. You need a little building, like the small guard shack by Walthers as a .control room in the refinery area. The office would be away from the facility. But you do need a monitoring station. This is from my own experience in a refinery.
@FlyingCrow21 күн бұрын
Good ideas. The larger curved roof building is going to have pipes going into it. There is one at the prototype. I was wondering if it was where all of the pumps were controlled.

Great tour of the refinery . I like that tank you scratch built , that came out great. How did you get the spacing figured out? Looks cool at night .
@FlyingCrow23 күн бұрын
You mean the spacing for the panels? For the vertical lines, I just took the circumference and divided it equally, same for the lateral ones. I used a cloth tape measure to mark the distances. I think one of them was about 1/16 inch narrower than the rest.
