Thank you for another great video. Thanks for sharing your approach and thought process. The realism is top notch! I also love how everything is durable, built to last and functions for disassembly, moving if ever needed. Couple of questions: where will the Nighthawks diner be placed? Do you have a video on creating the curved road with the yellow stripes next to "20351" ?

Not sure on the Diner at this point. It sure was a fun build though and I learned a ton from it. Paid a price for it as well with the finger injury I sustained building it. So I won't forget it. ;-) The making of the 'Duncan Way Crossing' road scene is in the post production que. It will publish soon under the publication que most likely on a Sunday morning feature. So, when designing my shelf layout, or a really big diorama in O scale, when viewing it from 6' horizontally, this is really 288' in real life. In HO scale, 6' would be 522'. How many of us look at the real world of rail roading from this far away? If you factor that we look at the layout from, say, 2' above the layout, that would be 96' high looking down in O scale or 174' in Ho scale. It gives a different perspective on what and how we look at what we want to build, i.e. how tall should the layout be? Boomer, you spoke about this issue on a recent podcast. I think your layout is 58''? Much taller than what most modelers use, but it brings the models closer to the viewer, and as a result, makes them look more realistic.
@boomerdiorama5 ай бұрын
Yes. Track level is indeed at 57" from floor. It puts me in the dirt @ approx. 87 feet (1/87 Scale) away from the action. Anything closer and the scale begins to betray itself. This is the dilemma of social media which often times betrays scale because it zooms in closer than it should. 😉

Boomer, Happy 21st, from a couple of day's ago. Though I did hear from the neighbour's who said the party is still going full on. Nice to see the boss turn up to give the build so far the once over. Have the cotton wood trees been removed permantly? It looks good with or without. I have to admit that since you got us all into making trees I have quiet a few hanging up in the garage in various stages of undress. One day they'll get finished when I'm not watching BOOMER video's. Spot you Sunday. Cheers, Chris Perry.

As you know the trees have a small finishing nail protruding out of the bottom. Therefore, with foam board/plywood substrate, I can pull and replant them at will. I sort of pulled them one day for a camera shot and forgot to replant them. I like it both ways as well. ;-)

Dear Boomer, cool to see the viewing standpoint with the valence. From those shots it becomes clear what you say and said before about restricting the visuals with a lower valence. At least to me and my humble eyes, think it will only add to the field of depth. Interesting what you said on adding the dimmable pods. Curious to see what you mean. With the 4000K River Road is lit rather well. Although I can imagine adding another ‘color’ can enhance the immersion. Great teaser into the Ipex Plastics area! Just enjoying the enthusiasm of the master! Absolutely love and appreciate the insight, encouragement, inspiration, enthusiasm and knowledge you immerse us all with! Cheerio

There is some shadow issues near the back corners of the layout I wish to address. Not sure if it is noticeable with studio lights but more so with standard lighting. They would probably be the same color temperature as well. The funny thing with lighting is the more you add the more you want. It's sort of addictive that way because they bring out all the details while enhancing the mood, etc. ;-)

You have a fantastic layout. I love the realism,and I have never seen better trees 🙂. I hope you and Dusty keep at it for a long time. However there is one thing on the layout that I don't think fits. Its a beautiful scratch buildt building, but in mymind wrong for where it is. You layout is industrial, frieght osv. But right between sections 1 and 2 there is a railway station! As i say bueatiful in its own right, but it cant have many passengers catching trains. 🙂. I prefered the workmans hut you had there before. However its your layout and you can do want tou want, I will still enjoy watching tou build it. I reckon you might have it nearly finished in 6 years time. All the best from Denmark

Excellent video and commentary Boomer! Your attention to detail is second to none. You have shown that smaller layouts can be just as much fun and rewarding as a larger layout. I think the key is discovering what you enjoy about model railroading and building a layout that fits those needs. You certainly have done that. It is all about the journey, model railroaders need to remember to slow down and enjoy it. Thanks for taking the time and effort to post videos documenting your modeling.
@boomerdiorama5 ай бұрын
Thank you Tom. Just curious. What defines a larger layout? Isn't there always a larger layout somewhere? Larger compared to what?The largest layouts I ever built I never published so I don't really understand the term . . . lol. 😆
@ThomasKlimoski5 ай бұрын
Hi Boomer, When I wrote my book I struggled to come up with a precise definition of a "small" layout, there are just too many variables. What if a modeler has a large room, but only uses part of it for a layout, how do you classify that layout? I finally decided that any layout built in a typical bedroom (10' X 12') could be defined as small, medium size layouts would be in rooms of approximately between 150 to 400 square feet, and anything over 400 sqaure feet is large. Also if a layout is double decked that would qualify as large, regardless of the square feet of the room it is in. As has been said before, "size doesn't matter" as long as you are enjoying model railroading. Really what determines the complexity of a layout is turnout number. You can have a small layout with a large number of turnouts and it can be as much maintenance as a larger layout with less turnouts. Most of your maintenance and problem issues comes from turnouts. If some enjoys a rail fan type of operation, then a larger shelf style layout with just a few turnouts would be a good choice, but it would be simple to build and maintain. What I want to stress to modelers is to build what is right for them, not what others think they should, as long as they know what they want. You have done a fantastic job of demonstrating how much fun you can have with a layout that meets your needs and desires. Your car float is a great example of a lot of operations in a small space, and perfect for someone that enjoys operations. I am looking forward to seeing part 3 of your layout come to life.

It's really coming along, Boomer. It's pretty cool seeing it standing back from your perspective. It's like a linear 3D shadow box. A sort of a shadowrama if you will. It appears to be looking at the real thing from a distance. It's like you captured a microcosm of a video that's actually a real working scene with depth instead. It's truly a work of art. Oh yeah, the trains are nice, too. The LED lamps are a good light source. I used 3000K LED mini flood lights on track and monopoints from WAC lighting above my layout and have a valance above the perimeter where I used LED rope lights. I painted a blue sky around the perimeter, and with the track lights on, it appears as backlit daylight. With the track lights off, it casts a blue moonlit glow over the entire layout. The track lights are also dimmable. They are 11 watt LED flood lights that are equal to 75-watt incandescent floods. 3000K is mid light color rendering and will enhance both warm and cool colors of the light spectrum. It's what retail stores market to light their products. It's why all the colors in the produce sections look vibrant and healthy, even the parts that aren't eaten, and the meat looks so red. Too cool, 4700K, and the warm colors will look faded and washed out, to warm 2700K, and the cool colors will look dingey and dull. 4700K is typically referred to as fluorescent shop lights, while 2700K is referred to as incandescent residential lighting. 3000K is the Goldielock zone in between and what is typically used to light paintings because it enhances and pulls out all of the intended colors. I've actually saved customers' money before looking to refinish their oak cabinets because they were pee yellow, and they wanted them to look like red oak. I put in can lights with 3000K flood bulbs above the cabinets and they turned from yellowish to redish, and she was surprised just the difference that the color rendering of the lamp achieved and no longer needed them refinished. I've relit customers' paintings to hear them say. Wow, now that's what the artist intended you to see. The correct color rendering or temperature makes a huge difference in what you see.
@boomerdiorama5 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing that exposition on color temperature. I have another light source which I will have to dial down a bit as you mentioned. Thank you! Cheers.
@DRCRailroard5 ай бұрын
@boomerdioramas Sorry, Boomer, your lighting looks great. If you were contemplating making lighting changes, I was giving some insight as a reference point to start from. Another thing to factor is lumen output in foot candles or intensity. Bare lamps without reflectors or a prismatic lens drops of rapidly without any drive. A flood lamp drives all the rated lumen output 8' down to the floor below. Spacing every 6' or the width of the spread, to remove shadows and eliminate hot spots. It's something to experiment with. Your working with a confined space so linear may be the way to go.

You're absolutely correct! Many, including myself start with grandeur of this class 1 system sitting in their basement but after a while lose interest due to work, raising family, paying bills, raising rescue dogs. My last layout was of a 40 mile shortline in my basement and was modeling it to the "T". After some time of not going down stairs, my wife suggested that I build a shelf layout in a spare bedroom. She's right. I had lost interest in that overwhelming dream to be exact and lost interest in the railroad. I have decided to model a really shortline of my own with my own customers and power in an 11'x11' room. Thank you for your perspective

I hope you rekindle your passion for modeling the railroad you love. The challenge I face is having to delete certain features and scenes. I tend to "hyper" compress things to have it all in a small footprint. Nevertheless, the layout feels very authentic. Therefore, I still love the feel of it, and it still has the spirit of the prototype I love to model. Cheers and Happy Modling ~ Boomer.👍 😁

I think the optimum words here are successful planning. Our informal group of modelers of 8, they all are very good modelers but seems like the layouts always have to be changed after they are 90% done. I also believe a lot of guys see something in a book or on video and want to add that and really did not think it through. I have be planning the track layout on my lower level for at least a year, made a ton of track plans, buildings I want to scratch build and what roadways I want to run on it. Google earth is just one of my research planning. Thanks Boomer!

Boomer, great update, it is so inspirational to see your vision, as it comes together. You are certainly a great educator, as well as skilled artist, who shares so much of those skills with us all. I thank you for that, as you have certainly improved my skills and modelling, I look at what I did 5 years ago to today, and it is vastly improved. I am well north of 65, and really enjoying modelling at the moment. Thank you for sharing, cheers, and stay safe, Michael

what i love about this is that it looks like every little area has a story to it, kind of like the star wars 'used universe' kind of thing. even every tree seems to tell a story.

I love the way you described that. Jeesh . . . you are right in the zone there. ;-) Cheers ~ Boomer.

@@boomerdiorama The reason I ask is I have already had one sisal bush go walking and I am thinking major derailment when rolling stock actually starts, well rolling. The boys (I have two) like moving objects.
