The sea is filled with stories and superstitions, spoken of in hushed whispers by those who brave its waters. But no myth or legend of the sea ever sent chills down the spine of the stoutest of sailors quite like that of the Flying Dutchman. A ghost ship that appears on the horizon with a freakish glow that vanishes as suddenly as it had appeared, the Flying Dutchman is a harbinger of doom, bringing misfortune and death to those who catch a glimpse of it. A chilling legend, but where did the mythical phantom ship come from?

BTW Dutch were first ones who develop Frigate, by cutting off castles from Galeon. Those ships at the time were capable of unexpected maneuvers giving rise to the legend. They also may appear incomplete or broken to inexperienced sailor.

That's the problem - it has nothing to do with the actual story of our national folklore. The actor (Bill Nighy) didn't want to do a Dutch accent, so they just made him scottish. And thus the scottish dutchman was born, and our national folklore was turned into a Disney lunchbox. It had nothing to do anymore with the VOC or the Cape of Good Hope - they just took the name and that's it. I remember being a kid and sitting in the theater and realising it had nothing to do with the story I grew up with. Eff Disney.

I saw this video up last night but have been postponing it because you left me in New Orleans mood recently. I've been doing a ton of research and connections thanks to your previous video. So thank you for setting my mind on a buzz. A positive one. I knew the Flying Dutchman for the first time through a Disney cartoon, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers. Yeah, I was very small but the chill it gave me remained till this day, spiking my curiosity across the years. While the most famous, The Dutchman is not the only ghost ship on our seas. I remember as a child I made my mother buy me a major Atlas type book of maps and with sunken treasures and vessels. It had a section about the "Ships that wouldn't remain sunken or that had never been found sunken despite never appearing anywhere ". I would feel quite afraid indeed if I ever went on a cruise and I saw one of these coming out of the mist. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean made a decent work at bringing back the magic and the folklore of the sea culture.

I might be crazy saying this but I believe the Dutchman actually existed for real and the reason the wreck is never found is because due to the fact that it went down in one of the most turbulent places on Earth and the wreck is now spread out in an area so vast and has been wrecked for so long it could be dispersed in MULTIPLE locations on Earth. There's a small chance this could be true since Earth's oceans are mostly unexplored and that the story of the Dutchman is too detailed to be a fable and that the name of the captain is still remembered. What I believe about the fate of the Flying Dutchman is that the captain may have been reckless and a daredevil, but I believe he knew there was no escaping the violent windstorm and the only way to go was THROUGH it. I think he believed they could make it because he was an experienced captain and had battled severe weather before, but unfortunately he met his match that day. I also believe his figure of speech involving selling his soul to the devil to make it may have played a role in sealing the ship's fate, now that it's forced to endure the ocean till hell freezes over and the devil dies, thus freeing them. It's kind of a tragic story. Captain Van der Decken was close to his ship like a traditional captain and decided "Not yet" when the storm came. He fought to reach his goals and died trying. He could've been also trying to save his crew as waiting for the tempesto would be something a coward, though not all, would do according to the historical phrase "history favors the brave". If he is regretful of his deadly mission, then I hope he is at peace, doing what he loved best when he and his crew perished: sailing the seven seas!

Brilliantly done video. The Flying Dutchman is easily one of the most frightening legends of any era. My personal favorite nautical legend is also of a ghost ship, one that sails upon a lake in northern Wyoming, it's ghostly crew gathered upon the deck, surrounding a body. If an observer looks on for too long, they will see the body is that of a living loved one who will die soon thereafter.

I know that people often completely dismiss superstitious stories like this and I’m also in agreement in saying that stories like this are in fact not true. But, then again, I find it wondrous to think about. All these supernatural stories, stories of lost souls, monsters, angels and demons, gods and mortals. They capture the imagination like no other, probably more than the works modern day fiction we have today. There’s just something about old stories that REALLY make their mark upon the imagination of all who hear of their legends. While these stories may not be true, that isn’t really the point. These are STORIES. They are entertainment, they are speculation, they have their own lore behind them. In the end, a story is just a story. But the story of something from long ago always makes one think and wonder. I guess what I’m trying to say is that, while stories like the the legend of the Flying Dutchman may not be completely grounded in reality, the imagination of it has never left humanity even hundreds of years after its inception. Stories like the Flying Dutchman give us a sense of wonder about the world. In the end, a story is just a story. But what an intriguing and captivating story it is.
