One day I went shopping on OfferUp and found a guy selling a 1953, DeWalt 3 phase, 3 horse GR54. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The thing looked brand new. Original paint, fully equipped and the former owner had even rigged an inverter so it could run on 220 single phase. He only asked $500. I went up to see it and verify that the thing really ran. It was perfect. No rust, not a single chip in the paint, threw a 14” blade and ran true and straight. It was even rigged with a switched power cord to operate a dust collector. I will never see a better deal for a power tool in my entire life. Trailered it home and spent the next week dialing it in to perfection. Added a custom made fence to hold Board Buddies for ripping. But I gotta say, Nothing but nothing beats a well made, 500 pound DeWalt radial.

Thank you Wally. We need this sort of explanation and high quality video to bring the RAS back into favor with woodworkers. Great job!

Love this. I just finished my first reading of the Mr. Sawdust book. I have an OK Craftsman that I have finally managed to get into alignment after following a combination of Mr Sawdust, the factory manual, Jon Eakes book and the Delphi forum for DeWalt Radial arm saws. I was determined to get the Craftsman saw functional to finish up some very basic work I am doing right now. My dad built cabinets for my entire childhood on a DeWalt RAS, and I have recently acquired one, but it's apart for reconditioning at the moment. The Mr Sawdust book has a nice description of using a perpendicular fence with a 45 degree. I would guess the wing idea came about as your dad thought about how he could do the cuts even better!

I use a jig similar to yours on my table saw. It work the same way as yours. I have made many jewlry boxes and the like using the jig and as you said ,"you can't get it wrong"! I like the fact that any length can be obtained. I have a friend that trims out buildings he also uses a table saw . you can also adjust the jig to get different angles. Your dad make an excellent picture frame.

Great video, I've watched it a few times. I have for years wanted a good radial arm saw, I've had 2 craftsmanship and both of them were good cutoff saws and that's about it. I believe now that I would like to get a 9inch mbf dewalt since they aren't to large. Thanks for the video and information

I did the same thing. I managed to find an old cast iron armed craftsman since there were no old dewalts in my area. I'm now on round three of setting it up and getting it square and am getting really close. I've had to take parts of it apart and clean out years of old packed sawdust and dirt but it now seems to be locking in at a consistent position. I almost threw it out after I set it up the first time an it wouldn't hold a setting. I think what has to be remembered is that all of these are now old, most are neglected, and most need to be cleaned and adjusted. I may still turf mine if I can't get it perfect but since I only paid $50 for it, and the recall on them from Emerson is $50, I'm not out anything to try and get it right. The tl;dr of all of this is try and get it set up, go through the manual step by step and see if you can make it work for you. If not, on to something that will.

Thank you all for the nice comments. I have to wonder about the 3 dislikes this video has gotten. Why no commentary to go along with the thumbs down ? I would appreciate knowing what you didn't like. Was it my video ? The jig ? The radial arm saw in general ? Or me ? Hitting dislike without a comment is like a hit and run. Thanks.

You can't focus on the dislikes. People dislike videos for the dumbest and most insignificant reasons. Focus on the 180 likes and all the positive comments below.

Sometimes when viewing videos on a cell phone a slip of the finger can press the thumbs down button . That could be a possibility. But like others have said . Don't worry about it . Video was very informative.

This Jig assumes your room is square and flat, not always the case. But for picture frames and shadow boxes its dead on.

No wood working shop is complete without a radial arm saw and the hundreds of wood workers to show you how to use them. It is a shame they are falling out of favor and I'm hoping I can change that by showing an idea I developed from seeing red pine trees a neighbor cut down for a clearing that nobody wanted and joined them with a saw nobody wants anymore. Flying Wing Jig meet the flying DeWalt Radial Arm Sawmill. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWjGc3-nZteahtE
