The original cut was much more of an atmospheric ghost story, but after initial screenings, they decided to go back and shoot some more explicit, brutal kill scenes. It seems that this and Halloween 2 weren't immune from the gory one-upsmanship of Friday the 13th and other first-cycle slashers.

The Fog is an original screenplay co-written by John Carpenter and Debra Hill. They got the idea for the movie after vacationing in England and seeing a mysterious fog that seemed to be glowing with a strange light. They were also inspired by the E.C. horror comics of the 1950s like Tales From The Crypt, which often had ghosts returning from the grave to exact revenge.

Carpenter has this neat horror technique of putting the main threat in full view behind the victim’s back and approaches slowly. Its really super creepy and effective as it really involves the viewer. He does it in almost all of his horror movies. He’s such a classy filmmaker as he hardly uses blood in his Murder scenes. Other horror directors who do slasher films rely on gore and shock to scare whereas Carpenter is a master of building up suspense and a great payoff.
@Tressym663 жыл бұрын
This is one of my favorite horror films. Mainly because when it came out it was clear that horror films were going in the direction of slasher films and just trying to be as gory as possible. The Fog simply captured the feel of a ghost story being told around the campfire.

The old man telling the campfire story about the ship crashing in the beginning was old-school character actor John Houseman, star of "The Paper Chase" and another good horror movie you might want to check out called: "Ghost Story". (Houseman's most fun role ever, for my money was as the villainous "Doctor Franklin" in the sci-fi series "The Six Million Dollar Man" and it's spin-off "The Bionic Woman" (1976) where he creates evil female robot duplicates of powerful men's secretaries so he can steal their secrets. He calls his inventions "Fembots" with is a term that the "Austin Powers" movie series borrowed and homaged 20 years later.) The priest, "Father Malone", was played by Broadway star and sometime film character actor Hal Hollbrook. He was probably best known on stage for his award winning one man show "Mark Twain Tonight" about the life of author Samuel Clemens.

Actually, the 2005 remake made more sense. A ghost has no use for gold...but to come back and claim his reincarated wife---that makes sense. Also there were a bunch of scenes left out of the theatrical release because money ran out and they coudn't finish them but they are on the DVD and add a lot. Tom Welling who stars in the remake was getting like three hours of sleep out of 24 because he was filming SMALLVILLE by day and The Fog remake by night. It should be noted that both John Carpenter and Debra Hill gave their blessing to the script for the new version unfortunate the studio sabotaged the product. Still, I enjoyed it because it was like visiting a familiar house and finding rooms you didn't know existed. Also the remame makes clear Blake and his men are targeting the descendents of those responsible for their deaths and the loss of his wife. Not just anybody they happen to run across. And in this version Jamie Lee Curtis is not playing Elizabeth Dane and has no connection to the ship, In the remake Maggie Grace's character is the reincarnation of Blake's wife. And Selma Blair (HELLBOY AND HELLBOY II THE GOLDEN ARMY) is in it as Adrienne Barbeau's character.

@@CassandrashadowcassMorrison The original was scary. The remake wasn't. End of story.

To answer your question at the beginning, John Carpenter based this movie on something that actually happened in California I think it was. In an interview he mentions he read historical documents and this town used a bonfire to cause a wreckage on a ship which allowed the town to scavenge for the ship and take all the goods it carried. So yeah that part of the story really did happen. He thought it would make for a great ghost story. The movie did become a novel though. I have always wanted to buy it so I can read it and see how much it differs from the movie. Edit There is a remake of the Fog with Tom Welling (Smallville) and Selma Blair who played the Radio Host. Whether it’s worth watching or not is left to you. I watched it and some things I liked. And others I didn’t. I liked the actor who portrayed Blake though.

The "ghosts" or "zombies" featured in this film are actually called "revenants". In folklore, a revenant is an animated decomposing corpse that is believed to have revived from death to haunt the living as a ghost. The word revenant is derived from the Old French word, revenant, the "returning" ("to come back"). Revenants are part of the legend of various cultures, including Old Irish Celtic and Norse mythology, and stories of supposed revenant visitations were documented by English historians in the Middle Ages.

This is an interesting case for Carpenter. He felt that the original version of the movie he made was too boring, so he actually reshot a third of it, and trimmed the remaining scenes a bunch. When the final version turned out to be too short, he added that prologue sequence. In the end it worked out well for him. He would eventually repeat that somewhat on The Thing, when he rewrote the script and restructured the film midway through production.

There are some superficial similarities, but I'd argue that both De Ossorio and Carpenter were similarly influenced by the literary tradition of fog-shrouded ghost ships. This is my first time actually seeing the original. I would say the remake is worth watching. The ghost-story at the beginning of this classic is good, and for some people the foreshadowing of the Fog and how it affects the characters sounds like it might have been an ambience creepiness that adds chills. For you, I think the remake might be scarier, so have a stuffed animal or a pillow to hold. And as other people check to make sure they know the path to exits, emergency or otherwise, you double check your path to your night lights. And as I convinced my niece during her childhood - and to such a degree at 19 she still adheres to this method of safety: Cats Eat Monsters. So I think the remake is worth you watching it, especially as your fresh eyes could give a really good analysis of how one inspired the other and what if any additions or changes were better or worse. Thanks for sharing Reh

hello jen, i just saw your video of the fog and i heard you had some questions. and i wanted to help. john and Debra were close friends, nothing romantic, if they were dating they were risking it for this film because the actress who played the radio show owner was john's wife. but some of the films, including this one had personal items john borrowed from Debra including a blanket in the mother's bed room and a lamp. there was a remake to the fog, but it was ruined with a romantic ghost story twist that would of saved it with a aftermath scene but was left very dry. (least for me) correct on Jamie, after Halloween Jamie wanted to play a role that wasn't the sweet innocent good girl, i think she was 17 or 18 in Halloween and if i remember right was getting offers for the sweet girl role. she didn't want to be known as the sweet girl and wanted more options in parts, plus she was growing up and chopped her hair into a more mature style (hence why they wigged her in halloween 2) she also wanted to play this role in hopes to break that image of the nice girl next door.

Yes, John Carpenter and Debra Hill were romantically involved, but they broke up shortly before Carpenter married Adrienne Barbeau.

OMG, zombies on the brain. They are not mindless dead people. They are vengeful ghosts on a mission.

I love The Fog and your video reaction. Carpenter is a master in the horror and Sci Fi genre. You should watch and react to his film Starman, a very good Sci Fi film. Blake and the others were Ghosts not zombies, by the way.

I didn't watch this movie for the longest time, because I read the title too fast the first time I saw it and thought it said "The Frog." When I finally realized years later that it was actually "The Fog", I was disappointed because I'd sorta planned to eventually give in and watch "The Frog" just to see what it was about. And now I can't.

Haha The Frog would be an interesting horror film, lots of close ups of scary looking frogs plotting their evil doings.
@martianmanhunter373 жыл бұрын
Well there is a 1972 horror movie starring Sam Elliott called "Frogs". The tagline is : "Today- The pond! Tomorrow- The world!" Maybe that would allow you to get your monster frog fix.

I'm not curious enough to verify, but I think Nancy Loomis played Jason Vorhees' mother maybe? EDIT: Nope, had to check and that was Betsy Palmer. Ah, if she is the young brunette who was onscreen w/ Janet around 8 minutes in, she played Jamie Lee Curtis' friend in Halloween I think. Last guess.

Although Carpenter had been involved with Debra Hill, he was married to Adrienne Barbeau at the time of this movie. It's based on an original screenplay after a mist-filled trip to Stonehenge. "The Mist" is a superlative King adaptation by Frank Darabont that has nothing to do with ghosts. Typical of Carpenter, he resorted to his acting stable of Darwin Joston, Nancy Loomis, Charles Cyphers, Buck Flower, Tom Atkins, Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis all of whom appeared in more than one of his films. Typical of Carpenter, the survivors are forced into smaller and smaller confined spaces fleeing from a horde! Three scream queens in this movie: Janet Leigh, Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis. Atmospheric Carpenter ghost story. Don't bother with the remake. It's gorier and less atmospheric. Please see Carpenter's 1976 "Assault on Precinct 13" and Darabont's "The Mist".

@@ReelReviewsWithJen AWESOME!! It’s also Directed by Richard Stanley (absolute legend) and he hasn’t done a movie in 28 years!!! He was famously fired off of directing The Island of Dr Moroue and it pretty much ended his career. There’s a documentary about the whole thing called Lost Soul: the doomed journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr Moroue. Color out of Space is his comeback, and it’s a passion project because he always loved Lovecraft’s writing. (Also, when you watch the movie, pay attention to the very opening scene. It’s so cool.)

This is my all-time favorite horror movie. I love this classic gem. If there's one negative thing I can say about it, it's the rating. There's no blood or gore, yet it was given the R rating. I've seen movies with PG ratings with more blood and gore (think "Jaws" and "Poltergeist", for instance). Nearly everyone defends the rating, despite the content. I don't get it. Why is *THE FOG* rated R when there's no blood and gore? Even the scene when the fishermen on the Sea Grass were killed lacked any blood and gore. You hear much more than you see. I don't get the logic.
@ReelReviewsWithJen3 жыл бұрын
That’s very true, it’s a very atmospheric type of horror movie. Thanks for watching!
