thanks for the videos..your re rebar explination makes no logical sense..the wall is in compression not the rebar yes it will be more difficult to tamp around it but the tradeoff is strength in shear laterally which this wall system has none of and is not needed with traditional design...tried and true
@TinyShinyHome4 ай бұрын
if you tamp an earthbag into compression and then pound in rebar, yes, you are breaking that compression of the bag. now, if you're wanting to just put rebar inbetween the bags (sticking out) to later add something there, that's a different story. but i wouldn't advise pounding in rebar into a compressed bag.

also, circles are inherently strong on their own. we're not the first to build this way, it can be done

@@TinyShinyHome difference in terms here the weight of the wall provides compression your thinking cohesion between the layers which is an unknown to me but pinning your courses is still advisable for that same cohesion laterally yes domes are strong barrel vault rotated through 360deg distributes the load down and not out better than a cube ever did again thanks for the videos

You two crack me up. You're so cute. I've been watching for awhile now and really enjoy the realness you bring into your build and into your everyday living. I'm impressed how you both press on. One year to build seems like a long time, but reality, if you were to build a home like yours with brick and mortar (stick build) on your own, it would take about the same time frame. I'm enjoying your build and the humor you bring into your journey. 😊

Hey guys, great info. We are Building an Earthship with hyperadobe bags instead of tires. Using design specifications for a retaining wall incorporating geo grid. Just wanted to let you know I did some testing. When assembling the rows of bags with no media in between the top row will push off fairly easily. When putting some of our mix in between the bag pushed off with a little more difficulty and broke in a few places. With our mix and barbed wire the top row took much more force and was pretty much destroyed by the time I pushed it off. I think the strength of the barbed wire comes more from it molding into the hardened mix. Nothing scientific here. Used my backhoe to push on the top bag. Sorry Jonathan, but I have to agree with Ashley.
@TinyShinyHome4 ай бұрын
Very interesting - though I think what would be a more complete test is pushing the wall when it's all tied together at the top and becomes a monolithic structure. Pretty much any wall partially built isn't going to hold up very well to being pushed by a backhoe 😂
@tonyd94854 ай бұрын
@@TinyShinyHomeI totally get that. I was only pushing on the top row and was more interested in how much that top row would crumble telling me the bottom of it was better attached. The bottom line is that the test with nothing in between the rows showed that the top row just slid right off the one below below it without any damage. With mix and barbed wire of course the top row pushed off, but it broke and a lot of the lower portion of the row was still attached to the row below it.

I think whoever is driving the car should have ultimate control of the radio, likewise I think whoever is standing on the wall should have control over whether there are rocks on the walkway since they're the one risking life and limb, especially since any benefit is theoretical. I think if there ever were a significant natural event strong enough to push those walls (tornado? flood? ), a few little stones between layers are not going to save the wall. Of course I hope this remains a thought experiment that Mother nature never tests.

On the subject of keeping the roof on - in theory you can sink anchors next to the inside edges of the walls and attach steel cable with turnbuckles once the roof is on. This would help against the wind coming up under the edge of the roof and potentially “flipping” it. Regardless it would definitely make the “hat” much more stable.
@TinyShinyHome4 ай бұрын
Maybe, but then you have a bunch of cables and stuff next to the walls.
@StoneKathryn4 ай бұрын
Also, their dirt is mostly sand so doing the hurricane straps like they do I think is more effective than just putting some type of anchor on the inside of the walls to hold the roof down. I think in high winds those might pull out! Have a great weekend!

Hi guys! I've gotten behind again! I was down for two whole days with severe right foot pain from doing my laundry in my new apartment building on Monday night. The washer was broken on my level so I had to go up to the third floor laundry with steps I could only do one at a time. I was in soooo much pain when I got through that I had to go to the emergency room. They gave me a muscle relaxer, Flexeril and it stopped my foot spasms so I could sleep! I took it really easy for a couple days after that. I'm finally looking at videos Friday night! I don't have an ISP at my new apartment so I'm at a casino using their wi-fi. I had to get out of pain enough to drive here. I really liked your presentation on hyperadobe vs. superadobe building! It was great! I'm glad you did this additional video to try to answer some of the people's questions. Yes, I thought people would wonder about plumbing because you didn't cover that. I'm glad you brought it up now. Yes, I liked how you explained the power would come down in your walls from the roof! I liked the "lightning round" you did to answer questions! Wow, lava rock as insulation, who knew! I never knew about using rebar in the hyperadobe bags too. Why? That was loud thunder! Take cover guys! The nature clips around your homestead are so beautiful guys! Thanks for those. I love your music too! So cute the "dirt cheap." I agree that building with hyperadobe bags is using very minimal plastic! Plus it is UV radiation resistant! I never noticed that Ashley was "behind" Jonathan. I think of them as a couple with equal teamwork! Thanks for this video Longnecker teammates! I love how you change off on being optimistic on the various projects and you keep the progress going and balanced. Bravo you two!
