I think it makes a lot of sense why it’s so overused: as soon as you saw it, you immediately started using it as well. Just goes to show how good of a font it is, which would be the major difference between it and comic sans.

The phenomenon you describe has a name. It's called "typomania" which was coined by type designer Erik Spiekermann. He said: "Words are meant to be read. End of story. I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE FUTURA. I AM LITERALLY OBSESSED WITH IT. the first time I saw it was in a book in an IKEA store, I noticed the straight „j“s and the symmetrical „u“s.

If you‘re interested in experimentation with Fonts, I recommend the book series „The Familiar“ by Mark Danielewski. The Author uses different fonts for different characters, providing a very novel and unique reading experience

The guy from House of Leaves! That sounds quite about right that he'd do something like this... I know that some editions of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (at least mine) do that where they use different fonts and their shapes, sizes etc to express emotions That's quite a novel approach

I don‘t think Sans makes an appearance, but I definitely recommend all of Danielewski‘s literary work. It‘s super fun to read (except Only Revolutions but we don’t talk about that book) and he‘s a super underrated author in my opinion, so I can only recommend it :D

Myriad, the default font made and used by Adobe in their products is also absolutely everywhere and hiding in plain sight. It was the main font Apple used for their product names and website in the 2000s (wherever it said iPhone, iPod etc.), it's used in some places by Nintendo like for the product info and serial numbers on some of their hardware and is used in many famous logos like LinkedIn, Walmart, Rolls Royce & Visa. But really where you'll find it the most is in random places here and there in real life.

if you look on any modern boeing aircraft, nearly all the text on panels are using Futura. older planes (pre 1980) used a variation of Gorton.

I recommend looking into Lexend, it's pretty similar to Futura with the smooth circular design, sans serif and lowercase a, but is more engineered and tested to be easier and faster to read.
