Fun fact about Norwich: they were the first British club to beat Bayern away.
@christopherbentley72897 ай бұрын
Earlier on that day I had been at one of my German lectures, studying Geography with German at my local university in Derby as a part-time mature undergraduate in the Nineties (I'm an adoptive 'Derbyshire Canary'). My lecturer was a Bayern fan and when we parted that late afternoon I could tell that she thought we didn't stand an earthly as I brought up the match and I thought the same too, more keeping up a show of bravado that we were going to get something out of the tie. I just had to ask her (in my best German!) what exactly had happened the previous week the next time we met!

Let me take you on a trip in time back to the late Seventies and my teenage years. My home city club, Derby County had enjoyed its greatest ever era, which is still unmatched and of course I had enjoyed that success as a couple of notable local celebrations. However, as younger brothers do like to be a bit different, I had, earlier in the decade, briefly dallied with Derbyshire's other League club, Chesterfield to express that difference from my Rams-supporting older brother. Then along came, in a strange twist of irony, the 1978 FA Cup Final, where Ipswich Town were described during the build-up to the big match as the 'Country Cousins' to big-city Arsenal, so I felt myself rooting for Ipswich, maybe as a fellow 'Country Cousin' here in Derbyshire. This made me start to have a thing for what could be described as the 'Yokel Clubs' of the provincial East, South and South-West - the likes of Ipswich Town, Southampton - the conquerors of mighty Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup Final - Bristol City and Norwich City, but it was only by quite late on in 1979, after reading a story in the paper referring to one-time Division Three South non-entities, Norwich City hitting the top of the League for the first time in their history after a victory over the aforementioned Arsenal that that momentum started by Ipswich about eighteen months previously found its end point in the local rival camp of Norwich. I think I was taken by the distinctive yellow and green strip and the very stylish, attacking football that John Bond's team, including a scorer of an England goal in a World Cup Final, Martin Peters, played. Thanks, Nieve, for this first-class analysis of the financial background to the phenomenon of 'Yo-Yo' (Yokel?) Clubs and for that trip around Carrow Road. The financing of football will never be perfect and there will forever be an especially aggrieved portion of clubs and their supporters. However, I would be prepared to make a small sacrifice to the benefit of clubs lower down the pecking order, while still hanging on to the majority as it is a reward for well-run clubs like Norwich. How strange that my home city club has almost become legend as a particularly badly-run club, in that context! It does appear to have turned a corner this season, nevertheless, so well done to my brother's lot!

I love your sense of humor and editing. Big hug from Brazil In my opinion, in order to start talking about balance in English football, Financial Fair Play must be applied and clubs must be punished equally. Everton loses points and City, with hundreds of accusations, emerges unscathed, piling up trophies.
@BarrenBones-t2h7 ай бұрын
I don't know how much your aware of from Brazil, but the reason City have yet to be penalised is because the charges are different. Everton and Forest just broke the rules (by spending more money than they were allowed to), and City straight up lied about not having done so. Theirs is basically just fraud, which makes it much more difficult to uncover compared to Everton's case which was just looking at 4 numbers total.

@George._.M7 ай бұрын
The issue with parachute payments is that they shouldn't be needed in the first place as there shouldn't be the same financial divide between the premier league and the championship. Ultimately the premier league shouldn't be a separate entity from the EFL and so money could be much more evenly scaled all throughout the EFL. The divide creates a need for the parachute payments as if a side with premier league wages gets relegated it is then very difficult to financially keep up with the big drop off in revenue. Although this has the draw back of further advantaging an already strong team in the championship making it harder for teams without parachute payments. As a Norwich fan it annoys me when people accuse us of having some plan of not trying in the prem and getting relegated to farm parachute payments. Not only is this untrue with us spending quite big on our last promotion but also the money is far better if we stay up so wanting to get relegated makes no sense.
@marks10147 ай бұрын
Gabby on Talk Sport was constantly spouting garbage about Norwich not trying in the Premier League. Obviously he's not very bright and doesn't understand how football finances work. Now clubs have started being taken to task for breaking FFP rules he might understand that spending above your means has consequences.
