Thank you for this. I was ecstatic to hear someone admit that the prequels at least tried to give us new elements to the Star Wars universe. For all their flaws, they at least tried. 7 did nothing.

The reason this didn't try anything and was just a rehash was because Disney was trying to make a cash in and didn't want to risk having Star Wars fans not liking the new material. That why they used old known faces too and they threw a female lead and a black guy also. Trying to appeal to other demographics in the hope to make it a bigger cash in. Nothing in that movie was because someone had a story idea or dream about Star Wars that wanted to show in the big screen. All was decided by a committee evaluating what was needed for a good cash in after buying the rights of Star Wars.

David, you are so not a jerk! I am so glad that I was not alone in the "Wait...What?" line of thinking. I missed much of the movie simply because my brain was too busy trying to figure what the heck was going on. When the movie was over and I was walking out of the theater, I was very angry and disappointed. I began playing devil's advocate with myself, thinking that because I have read many of the novels from the extended universe my own preferences got in the way of enjoying the film. Also, this would explain my confusion about Kylo Ren whose given name is Ben, since in the EU Ben is the son of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade. Once I calmed down and started thinking about this travesty logically I discovered the horrible truth which you have captured nearly perfectly. Thank you for your honest heartfelt review!! I hope others shake off their hype induced coma and see this thing for what it is..... Episode VII: This Failed Abysmally

+Leah Villmer Lucas's original story ideas had Ben Skywalker and Han's son as the protagonists, if memory serves me. Why would Han name his son Ben? He knew Obi Wan for like a day and a half. Luke grew up knowing him, and was watched over by him.

which makes you think that now we're supposed to imagine stormtroopers are just regular dudes (and dudettes!) in plastic armor who are essentially slaves forced to fight under dire circumstsances, which makes their use as cannon fodder by the empire/first order and their gleeful slaughter by the 'good' guys all the more tragic. movies like inglorious basterds take particular bloodthirsty delight in humiliating and slaughtering nazis, which out of context, appears absolutely horrible and sadistic, but the viewer is supposed to remember what the real nazis did and say "they had it coming." are stormtroopers the disposable army of hapless automatons that the good guys are morally justified in massacring without a second thought (with their deaths even being played for laughs), are they moral agents who have chosen evil and deserve their fate, or again, people who could easily change if given the chance whose humanity is not regarded by anyone until they take off the helmet? these stormtroopers really have no reason to be so evil if they're all so plucky and easily converted and there is no dwelling on the tragedy of wiping them out so willy nilly. you can't have it both ways... both pretending to care about their plight and then forgetting all about it. so portraying Finn as a brainwashed goon who has to slowly recover his lost humanity would be quite compelling and could fit with the overall story. T2 handled it with some humor and it was genuinely touching at the end when John was crying for the machine that had once been sent to kill him. other movies have done it too, I think it was Soldier and some others, Star Trek, etc. if Finn is able to laugh at a joke and start to smile at the end, he could have had an arc. instead it's so quick you almost miss it and he's gleefully blowing away his former brothers and sisters (?) with the rest of the rebels way too quick. even by rise of skywalker we're told that entire groups laid down their arms and embraced the good side, but nobody bothers to try to help that along. big missed opportunity. and I hear that there's a book or comic you're supposed to read that shows Finn was an oddball outcast who had never seen combat and all his sadistic "family" were enthusiastic killers who bullied him so he had no remorse in turning on them (other than the one who wiped blood on his helmet, I guess that was his only friend in life). still, after all that trauma, he just blinks his eyes a few times, takes a stroll in the desert and he's a well adjusted, if clumsy, young kid hanging out with everyone else like he belongs there. I don't buy it either!

the sad thing is when the prequels came out, and they were being based by some fans, other fans were saying "well the originals weren't perfect either you know" and making up all kinds of excuses why the prequels were not only good but an improvement over the old movies, that it was only nostalgia that was preventing them from being seen as great. then many of those same people seem to have fallen into the same feedback loop with the sequel trilogy. I can only imagine it will happen with the next set of movies as well. star wars wasn't just great because we didn't know any better in the 70's. it wasn't just nostalgia that kept it alive. it was actually good! that doesn't mean everyone loves it, but it touched on something that has mass appeal across generations, which is the mark of "good" art if there ever was one. there's no accounting for taste. people loved avatar when it came out, but who, besides James Cameron, cares about it now and it hasn't been that long since it was in theaters! it reminds me of how whenever there is a new batman, the trend was to bash the earlier incarnations as trash and the latest one as great, then rinse repeat with the next one. so you had people trashing Adam West when Michael Keaton was on screen, and then Keaton was binned when Christian Bale was in the suit. (I guess Ben Affleck broke that mold though, very few admitted to thinking he did more than a passable job. ). the thing is, for something to be great, you don't need to have a steady stream of spinoffs and new content coming out all the time, you can just enjoy the thing itself. Yes, they keep putting Shakespeare on the stage, but they aren't constantly remaking it, yes the actors change but the script remains pretty much the same, even if the background set might be different. do you see people trying to write brand new Shakespeare plays "in the style" of the Bard? wonder how well those would do (I guess "Shakespeare in love" was the closet to something like that, and nobody remembers it except as a punchline).

So, if I could add my two cents, Qui Gon Jin, one of the most powerful Jedi, the one who taught Yoda how to comune with the dead and maintain his personality after death, he could not perfomr the mind trick properly. But Rey, a teenager, who at least has forgotten all training, performs mind trick in seconds. So, this is a slap in the face of SW fans.

A word for this review....BRILLIANT!! I love how you intelligently broke down exactly what I was feeling after coming out of the theatre. I must say, Star Wars episode VII and this review has got me thinking about my old science fiction film script I haven't worked on since 2007. Currently, it's in first draft form at 397 pages (all done free-hand). I definitely need to take off the dust of that story and get to the re-write, putting it in correct format (88 to 120 pages). Because I think movie-goers need a revival of some sort. I would like to recreate the impact of Star Wars, without REBOOTING anything... different story (original content) in a different universe, hopefully with similar results in terms of following. Not a trilogy...not 9 parts over a 30plus year period. Just a quick 1-2 punch. Two movies is the aim... that's it. Why am I mentioning this here? Well....one, this review by David sparked new motivation to re-visit my story and two, assuming all goes well with its production, this comment will be the biggest premonition on this youtube channel. So, I'm putting it in the universe, calling it out right here.... ...that by the time we get done with Disney's Star Wars movies (right around 2019 or so), there will be a NEW sci-fi or space opera available for people to indulge in. And who will create it? A guy who started out doing what most people consider to be soft-porn with poetry > www.vimeo.com/thebookofsultry which is currently the only minimally successful testament to my writing ability....haha! Seems crazy...but I'm sure that's the same thing people thought of George Lucas' story before 1977. Thank you David Stewart and you read it here FIRST!! ..

@thedon7082
@thedon7082 6 жыл бұрын
Adam Duffield I'm sorry but the phantom menace is an extremely boring movie to me. the only thing I enjoyed about the phantom menace was the final battle. to me, the main thing that makes a movie is the journey of the characters, and the characters in the phantom menace are completely boring and flat. none of them have any arcs. Qui Gon has no character traits outside of "stern Jedi master". Obi Wan has no character traits outside of "the Padawan". Padme has no character traits outside of "the queen". Anakin has no character traits outside of "little slave kid". Jar Jar has no character traits outside of "dumb comic relief". even Darth Maul has no character, we know nothing about him (which I would be fine with if any of the other characters had a character). they're not characters, they're just caricatures. please, tell me why I should even remotely give a shit about any of these characters. same with attack of the clones. one of the two storylines is about Obi Wan trying to find Padme's assassin, but that wasn't interesting because we essentially already know who's behind it (Palpatine), Obi Wan has no kind of character arc, and Dooku isn't a very interesting villain (a former Jedi who turned evil is an interesting concept but they never really explained why he turned). now I really like the scene where Anakin finds his mother and briefly becomes frustrated with the Jedi, but unfortunately it's only being explored for a few scenes, it's not an arc running throughout the movie. his arc is basically "I want to fuck Padme". I'm sorry but I have absolutely no idea why people like those movies, I haven't heard any real arguments for why they're good, most people just say that they like them because they grew up with them. people are just blinded by nostalgia. now it's fine to enjoy them for nostalgic reasons, but you can't say that they're genuinely good just because of nostalgic reasons. now don't take this as me saying that TFA is a good movie, because it isn't, but I would rather watch it over 1 and 2. because at least the characters have some form of development. Rey, despite being way to overpowered, does have some form of internal struggle and growth, as she learns to stop waiting for her parents and move on. Finn learns to stand up to his enemies rather than running away. Han and Leia have to deal with the loss of their son.

After EP. 7 came out I noticed the same issues you did, but went back a second time to see if I was wrong or over critical. But second time made it worse for me. I don't know if you got much backlash for this video, but I received a lot from many of my friends that I have known for years. "It was way better then the prequel crap". I had some issues with the prequels (namely jar jar and Hayden Christensen's acting, and a couple of continuum holes with the originals) but I thought the story was good, the music good and the visuals awesome. I think some people just want EP. 7 to be better than the prequels just to spite Lucas, or just are delusional about how bad 7 really is.

Episode 8 and 9 is going to be just a rehash of Episodes 5 and 6 but with modern political correctness. *sigh* When I heard JJ Abrams was directing this, I knew the franchise was in trouble. He turned Star Trek into more of a special effect plotless mess than the originals... and the same was applied to SW.

+Khorzho He did more than that to Trek. Star Trek was always about adults making difficult moral decisions, and dealing with the consequences of their actions. At first it seemed like Luke was doing alright, then Vader starts talking and you know that he is toying with Luke. Messing with him, showing him that even at partial effort Vader is stronger. Then you are hit with a huge bombshell, Vader is Luke's dad, bam, no one saw that one coming. Then with Rey and Kylo, dude barely manages to hold his own. She injures him, she is kind of injured. Neither one gave us a good duel. She was just kind of stabbing while he did stupid Grog like swings. We got all of these great duels, Obi-Wan and Vader, Luke and Vader, Maul vs Obi-wan and Qui-Gon. Then we get two retards just blindly stumbling around.

This critique is exactly on the mark. Your description of the lack of crescendo in the pace of the action exactly describes the complete blandness of the film. This is what I've had a hard time describing. Two notes I would make about the critiques of the film: 1.) Everybody rags on Rey being a Mary Sue. Eh, this is just part of the blandness. It's no big deal, just more nothing. 2.) People mention the "high production values." What film being shown at your local cinoplex is made with "low production values?" If this film were shot on 8mm, then it might actually look different from everything else!

I understand what you mean; it just goes without saying. Production values takes me right into the difference in quality between this stinker and GL's films. Lucas had more main characters, more supporting characters, more extras, more sets, more everything, even in his very first Star Wars film. How anybody could call this stinky "good" is beyond me. Talking about low budget horror flicks, I still think Evil Dead was a truly extraordinary film.
@DVSPress
@DVSPress 9 жыл бұрын
Paul Kent I loved Evil Dead,and low budget horror in general. Low budget isn't necessarily a bad thing. In horror it can actually make the movie better. When you lack the budget to cgi a monster, you just hide him in the shadows, which is infinitely scarier and more tense, since it taps into the unknown and lets your imagination go wild. That's why the first Alien film was so amazing (though it was not low budget, just limited in its possibilities)

You're not a jerk, every complaint you have is totally legit. Frankly, you are vastly, vastly, vastly too easy on this offensively horrible piece of crap. Oh, and The Farce Awakens was a $250,000,000 fan fiction film. The fact is, JarJarAbrams is arguably the worst writer and director on earth, and definitely has the most infantile mind. He also has the most revolting agenda, which is "adopt, then destroy the great works of others"... proven by his literal destruction of StarTrek franchise (where he literally erases/eliminates/destroyed the timeline of TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager and all previous movies), his totally incoherent, inconsistent, contradictory, nonsensical story flailings in the "Lost" TV series, and now the total destruction of the StarWars franchise (for which we must also thank KathleenKennedy, who seems to have the same evil agendas and attitudes).

David Stewart I don't know about convincing, but he was certainly the most fun along with Po and the Droid. Were it up to me the movie would have just been a chase/road trip with Po, Finn, and the Droid making their way back to the resistance. No returning characters or recycled plot or familiar places. A NEW adventure. . But I stopped enjoying SW back during the NJO series of books so I don't really have a dog in the fight. +1 sub

+treiz Yeah I thought about doing a "better plot" video with Finn as the main character. Poe ends up accidentally kidnapping him during an escape and he has to have a slow and hard moral awakening as they try to survive their adventure. I don't really dislike him as character, I just thought his transformation was unconvincing.
@treizTUBE
@treizTUBE 8 жыл бұрын
David Stewart I'd watch it. As to the transformation, I can go either way, the movie doesn't give us the starting point for the character or anything about what his day-to-day is like. I did like that they made a point to showcase the dehumanizing practices of the [Empire part deux] when he gets chastised for removing his helmet. They need orders to even show their faces to each other, even the mid-level officers aren't people, they are the job.

Corporate board room thinking? I don't even know anymore. It's so prevalent in all of Hollywood now. So few studios put out film as art, it's now film as product to be consumed. I was surprised that Blade Runner 2049 managed to skirt a lot of these problem, though it wasn't a perfect movie by any means. It still did a better job than all the new SW films at being visually stunning, having characters grow and change, all within an interesting setting and story. I'm curious to know what you thought of the Dark Tower movie, assuming you also read the books too.

I immediately sensed from that first teaser trailer last year this was likely going to be the most expensive fan film ever made... and I was right. It felt more like someone simply doing a SW impersonation rather than the genuine article. None of these new aliens (except maybe Maz) looked very 'Star Wars-y' to me (plus, where were ANY of the classic SW alien species such as the Rodians or Twi'leks?). Some of the dialogue felt too 'contemporary' (Finn often came off more like Will Smith in "Independence Day"). The whole endeavor felt as though it was purely to get all those who were pissed off at the prequels back into the fold (i.e. pandering : P). While, I'll admit it's a good enough **REGULAR** movie, it's a lousy **STAR WARS** movie -- whereas, you could argue, with the prequels, it was the other way around (and they would've been easily remedied by one or more more disciplined, less reluctant screenwriters and/or one or more more actor-friendly directors). BTW, SW is also just as much about building a whole other universe as it is storytelling... but here we got just another desert planet, just another forest planet, and just another snow planet; nothing like Geonosis, Utapau, Felucia, etc. from the PT. : P

it does feel like a fan film. and while I kind of cringe a little at fan films when they do silly stuff, I can brush that off and say "they did they best they could with what they had" and admire it for one person (or small group)'s imaginative spin on star wars that they obviously love. this is different, it's the official star wars sequel to the movies you loved, that you need to acknowledge as "canon" and love and respect. had TFA been just a fan film I would have giving it a standing ovation. since it's an official work, it deserves the scorn it gets, even if you ignore all the silly excuses made by the production people after the fact. fan films tend to be thinly disguised remakes of the stuff they like done not quite as well, I think that's the key and they tend to be high on inserting stuff that individual thinks is cool or would like to happen to them (mary sue, self insertion, etc) as opposed to what is plausible in the established universe.

This film does a real disservice to women and girls. Think of the lessons this teaches them. That untrained, 120 lb women can easily defeat one or more 220 lb men with a glorified stick in a physical confrontation. Indeed that untrained women in general are better at everything then trained men. Not only is this incredibly patronizing to both men and women, it's a dangerous message to send, you're setting women and girls up to fail in reality by discouraging them from earning skills and ability under the assumption that they are just automatically better then men. How much better would this have been if Rey started out pretty incompetent and spent two and a half moives training to become competent? You know, actually have an ark? But god forbid we show a woman as incompetent in this day and age who works hard to become competent.

We now know fan-films are sometimes better than the official products. Thank you Jar Jar Freaking Abrams, you and all the money makers of Hellywood, you hollow-hearted corrupt pricks. Abrams being a showrunner in the first place, his style and scope are those of a TV yesman, but a one with no consistency or originality whatsoever but lots of sparkle and frantic filming, instead of epic and narrative concerns (cf Lost, Fringe, Star Trek rehash). I can't wait to see episode 2 of 'Disney©'s STAR WARS™ - Darth Tantrum Vs Kid Wonder Girl' TV series! I'm sure everything will be louder, flashier and faster. And we'll have Toys to collect! My Amazon review of the film echoed the "fan film" sentiment in the title. I didn't leave the theater thinking it sucked. I left somewhat ambivalent of it. I was entertained...but in such a way as if to say "nothing new to see here". It was just....there. It really is little more than a $100 million fan film. IMHO, regarding the "rules-breaking" and stupid-amazing coincidences: J.J. Abrams has no sense of scale. This movie gave me a new appreciation for the prequels. :) Don't get me wrong: I still could do without Jar-Jar Binks, awkward and wooden "romance" dialogue, "I have the high ground!" and "Yippee!" But they *expanded* the universe, inspired my imagination, and gave us "Clone Wars." I would have been far more impressed with this movie if they'd flown in to attack Starkiller Base, and DID NOT succeed in blowing it up for once. :D THAT would have been a twist, and been a draw to see what happens in the next movie.

I have no problem with Rey having all these powers but we all know that it takes years to acquire such abilities. Just like this video points out, it's absurd that she becomes a Yoda-like Jedi. It's nonsense that she becomes this crazy powerful Jedi. And to make it worse, she just learns that the force is real considering like a day ago, she thought Luke and the force were myths. JJ Abrams demonstrates that he has no idea how SW works. I thought that the new films lacked any connection to the previous films. Abrams has no idea how the SW galaxy works. The fact that Abrams was more interested in racial diversity rather than pacing, how the Force works shows a lack of understanding. This is not Star Trek which you can easily put the characters in perspective. SW is a unique universe which has to be understood before writing a story.

Yep - easily the most overrated movie I've seen in years...maybe decades...perhaps even in my entire life. All you really need to examine are the ridiculous "progressions" of Fin's and Rey's characters - just a horribly written script. That said, IF you accept the script for what it is, I guess it wasn't that bad (i.e., they did a decent job telling a very poorly constructed story). Overall, I think a lot of people like this movie, or at least THINK they like this movie, because it is better than the prequels (which is really the best thing I can say about it). If the Force Awakens would have been the fourth movie made (e.g., been released in 1999 instead of the Phantom Menace), I bet of lot of those people would pretty much hate this movie too.

I thought the movie was bad. It was very lazy writing and I agree the characters in this first movie were just awful. I think it will be revealed in the next movie that Rey received jedi training when she was younger and it somehow got erased from her memory. This first movie was just an attempt to make the ultimate female unstoppable Mary Sue warrior who doesn't even why she is this way. I was actually more disappointed in Kylo Ren he was such a letdown as a sith. I can't possibly get excited about seeing more of his character.

Thank you David Stewart and you read it here FIRST!! ..

Considering the character and Carrie Fisher herself were very sassy, I expected old Leia to be something like Olenna Tyrell from Game of Thrones. They wasted the trio so badly it almost feel criminal; we didn't even have a reunion of the whole gang.

Star Wars ended with episode VI, no matter how hard anyone wants to complain. No George Lucas equals over budget fan fiction funded by, *SKOFF* Disney... don't like that well tough, Ep VI ended with ewok celebration and jedi reunion, that equals THE END. DONE its OVER!!! GO HOME!!

I must protest. Fanfiction can be well written. SW under Disney does not make the effort to pull lore from all canon like good fanfic does. Sturgeon's Law holds for fanfiction, I'm still waiting for Disney to do something in the 10%. (Finn doesn't read like indoctrinated clones, but poorly indoctrinated recruit)

funny thing is once I heard the newest one was basically a feminists' wet dream I just knew I wouldn't pay money to see it. didn't hurt the producers much, seems like blowin a 50 to take my family to the cinema is getting hard. seems most of the movies recently have been showing us men as doofuses and women as super, my wife even got sick of the crap. I liked the newest avengers while she was chuckling about black widows' kick assery, I had not even thought about it till then.

You said maybe it didn't violate the rules of the Star Wars universe because its a fantasy film. I read an interview with Lucas back before he made the prequels. He said when he violated the laws of physics (like no sound in space for example) in his movies, he had to stick with it as if it was a law. Every ship, explosion, etc now had to make sound in space.

if ray wasn't in the movie then finn would look a lot like a jedi. He has a lightsaber and he mindtricks the girl stormtrooper into turning the shields off and he fought better against the bad guy than luke did against darth vader

18:30 This is a big problem in a lot of modern movies. My dad, for example, has no interest in any of the superhero movies because he knows they're going to win. That makes it boring.

VII was horrible and did nothing to further the franchise. The positive reviews/ratings are pure nostalgia and a desire to like the movie. People have literally willed themselves into liking this film

Well said, David! TFA is essentially a rehash of ANH. Abrams and Kasdan played it safe instead of coming up with a new plot featuring old and new characters. Here's hoping that episodes VIII and XI are much better! I look forward to seeing more of your videos! You just earned a new subscriber! :)

I literally didn’t watch another one, because I was left wondering how the wannabe Vader ever got off the planet before it exploded.

You’d be surprised how many ships and sets and practical effects were used in Phantom Menace (Star Wars Episode 1) alone. They dwarf the original trilogy.

I think more fans are going to snap out of the fog and realize this movie was a huge let down. I can see them doing their own type of prequel movies by going back and giving us what happened after Jedi and before TFA.

+DewkChronic Disney already has spin off movies and stuff in the works for that time period, totally eliminating the Extended Universe.

I wanted to like Force Awakens SOOO much more than I did. I chalked it up that they were playing it safe and we'd bring out the big guns in 8 and 9. 8 and 9 were beyond ridiculous. What a mess. My love and respect for the prequels skyrocketed after this disaster.

Everyone wanted to like it. I wanted to like it. I think it was a much bigger disappointment than the second movie because by the time of Last Jedi my expectations were already very low.

I've been watching these Star Wars sucks reviews ever since watching the movie yesterday and being angry about it. The movie was actually good up until they got to that forest planet. Jakku was an interesting place, because the exploration of the ruined Starships and AT-ATs was cool and I did like the Millennium Falcon chase scene. Star Wars actually never did have archaeology and ruins exploration before. After that, Rey did too many Jedi things, there were too many plot holes, and the movie just became exactly like episode 4.

+ValisFan3 Thanks for watching! I too liked the idea of ruins. That was one of the things that actually appealed to me.

That's going to be this new trilogy in a nutshell: No new stories or character development; just Disney playing with their toys and going, "See how much fun we're having? Buy our toy line and you can have this much pleasure, too!"

I watched it yesterday and it was horrendous. How can a 2 hours movie feel so rushed? It was very boring at the same time. I never felt that main characters were in any real danger. I don't think highly even of old SW series (as a scifi they fail in just every aspect) but this was even much worse because new characters were immortal.

I'm thinking that the whole point of the movie is to show a woman as being superior to men. The PC culture has ruined Hollywood. They are like little kids, pretending what they wish to be true, as being realistic. They ruin everything they touch, putting their stinky cheese odor on the product, expecting people who can't stand the stench, to "learn" to like the stuff. Screw the propaganda, make movies without that PC shit, and don't rely on gimmickery and razzle dazzle noise and visuals. We've grown weary of the lazy writing, the virtue signalling, etc. We get it. We know they are barren of thoughtfulness, stupid, and boring. Get Aunt GoodyTwoShoes out of movie making. Dammit.

I'd say the only point that is unfair is a similar one that is made for TLJ in breaking the laws of physics. It's fantasy story set in space, and not hard sci-fi so it's somewhat forgivable. Now breaking the lore is very, very bad. Lore matters more in fantasy than physics.
