In the Bible in Isiah 11:2, the seven spirits of the Lord are listed. Two of them apply directly to teachers: the spirit of knowledge and the spirit of understanding. The first is self explanatory. The second, the spirit of understanding, is the ability to explain what you know. I expect we've all had teachers who knew their subject but couldn't explain it. You sir, not only know your subject well, but you also possess the ability to explain it so that people can understand it in a thoroughly entertaining manner. Good show! You know what I be sayin"?

Seeing the inside of that cab takes me back to being an Ag Student during the glorious summer of 1983, corn carting with a Ford 7700 - halcyon days in Eastleach, Glous.

Never been much of a Ford man but always loved those UK conversations. Lots of cool industrial history there. Bout 4 years ago when I was scouting seed corn I got lost trying to find a field and went past a run down old farm that just so happened to have a County and a Muir Hill sitting out in the pasture. Always wanted to stop and ask about them. Not something you expect to find in Michigan.

The 8100 were never sold in the States but a handful actually made it over. I know there's a few County's over with you guys but I've never seen a Muir Hill there ! I really like the Oliver's and a few have been imported here but I just love the collection you have. Thanks for watching and keep at it - you've been missed ! 👍

I drove 8100 for about 18 months with the shindler 4WD convert awsom tractor reeked like a steam train wen u worked it hard was very prone to craking the no1 injector pipe. It got replased with a Renault 133-14 but dident have the same driveability as the 8100. Nice video brings back memorys

Awesome video and History about the 8100, spent a lot of time driving one of these back in the 80's, the only downside i found about the 8100 was the front end was very light, and had a few runnings on slopes with it..

Hi, I’m new to your channel, boy I remember theses, I went to work for a farm and they had one if memory servers me well and the pump was opened up and boy did she fly, you needed a pilot’s license she sure got down the road but I’m not in farming but still remember the old small fords and the bigger stuff of the 80’s and 90’s early ish great thanks, markUK

The 8100 must be one of the most underrated and little known tractors of the Ford Tractor range. We have one and are often asked "what is it". Around 25 years ago the original Dorset type engine was removed and replaced with a NH Power Star 7.5 litre engine ( 260hp stock) from a 8970 , plus the inlet manifold was changed for a water cooled one from a NH TX66 combine, so maybe a little more power and a much neater intercooling installation. We also have an old MuirHill with the Dorset type engine ( 115hp I think ) but the Power Star engined 8100 is still far more economical on fuel. The conversion actually shortens the tractor as there is no need for an adapter ring and cotton reel extension for the flywheel ( no clutch shudder ! ). The engine simply bolts straight on to the bell housing with no need for the EVA bath. A TW flywheel and clutch is used ( it does have to be converted from 6 bolts to 8 ) and a whole host of other but doable details have to be attended to. The 8100 probably the world's most underrated tractor,had 3 one fwd , simple fairly easy to work on only floor was the shaft from flywheel to PTO would break if on heavy PTO work , back in the day if you needed an engine a trip to your local lorry breaker and age hundred quid and you where back in businessgood video 81,s making strong money nowadays

Your ford 8100 is a modern tractor to me, I collect tractors from the 1920's - 60's over on my wee channel, but i enjoyed that talk on the history of the 8100 you presented that very well. All good Stuff

I had a Ford 8100 in the mid 80s I worked for a contractor and the tractor was converted to a road rail With a Turner 25s on the back I do have photos love the old fords

I just bought a Ford 4000 here in Canada, I have it in to get the PTO break fixed (I want it to be safe as it will be the first tractor my son uses, not that a worn break is the end of the world). But I should get it in a few weeks. It will be perfect for snow removal here in Canada. It is a gas, which makes it easier to start in minus 30 Celsius (every few years we have a cold snap like that, it can be minus 50 farther North) but not as good for things like heavy plowing. When I was young I worked on a dairy farm and my favorite tractor was the Ford, I guess I keep going full circle. I had originally set out to find a Ford 3000, which is much more common, but I could not find one that was not abused badly.

My friend has a Roadless 118 which has the same 6 cylinder engine. Was a brilliant front line tractor did all the slurry tanker work and was great on a precision forage harvester. Leads a more sedate lifestyle now..

Yes, same reason, Ford had nothing in that horsepower range with a 6 cylinder engine so Roadless offered the 118.

Quality vid mate I only spot the Saunders comment at the end . Epic video I often wondered about the evolution of Ford and what was the true story around County . The 8100 is a very interesting machine , I drove a big 7600 back in the day 2 wheel drive , powerful yoke , done a lot of carting myself in one . Grain Cart 💪✅✅✅

Brilliant, I used to drive one of these back in the day loved it the view from up there was great compared to the 7610s , alas at least twice it had problems with the block leaking water into the oil.

Next job........ turbo fitment 😁 seriously nice tractor , I can remember my grandads contractor used to have one for carting with back in the day' it sounded like nothing else when pulling loads back to the clamp up the hills, you could always hear it coming before the others and it always looked huge when I was used to seeing 135’s & 165 Masseys lol

Back in about 1992, I had the pleasure of driving a brand new TW25 that had a power shift gearbox to cart peas to a pea processing factory near to Grantham Lincolnshire. But the pleasure only lasted for about 2 hours, because after that, the transmission had over-heated and went into limp mode...

@@LordMuck If my memory serves me correctly, the not a "TW 25" power shift transmission was since made programmable to up shift more than one gear at a time, such as in low load, road work situations. Ahead of its time?

Hi Kurt, Loved the video about the 8100. You have found a lovely straight example. They are hard to find. I drove an 8210 4x4 for years. I know the 8210 had a de rated 401 engine which left them dead enough. You had to keep the revs up to to get the best of them. Never drove an 8100 so curios as to how the the industrial engine worked out,.

Hi Kurt, following on from the NH 8970 Power Star engine conversion carried out around 25 years ago on our 8100, a few memories have stirred. I'm getting on a bit now so I stand to be corrected if my memory fails me. Because the whole tractor ended up approximately 10 inches shorter we needed to convert the 8100 from its short wheel base arrangement to a long wheel base arrangement. This of course is quite easily done by turning the whole axle and yoke assembly around. This made the tractor look "right" and in proportion with a standard looking wheel base again. Do you think that your 8100 with its very long bonnet due to the Dorset engine installation could also benefit from also having its wheel base lengthened ? I remember being told by a fitter that the short wheel base was best for working in restricted areas while the long wheel base was best for large field work. You would of course need the correct drag links which might now be difficult to find. Another feature of the 8100 is its high gearing for its day. The same fitter told me that the 8100 having a 7700 /6700 rear end which normally ran 14/34 wheels, when equipped with 38 inch rims fitted with high profile 650/18 tyres, the gearing was obviously raised. This feature made it quite popular with dealers who often kept one for delivery work. The Dorset/ D series is a very good engine which 40 years ago would cost you about £100, normally taken from a Ford lorry. This engine was good for a Fordson Major installation, but the governor was slow coming in at low revs and was all top end. The Dorset engine in our MuirHill is a totally different beast and one gets the impression it would drive right through a house at tick over without stalling.

I always liked the look of the 81's in SWB configuration. Mine has its factory engine so is set for low down torque and it really does pull well. I had a Super Major with a 6D 590E from a Thames Trader and it went like stink but wasn't much good low down.

@@LordMuck Way back in the late sixties we always wanted a Ford 5000. Fordson Majors seemed so old even then. We never did get to buy a 5000 but made do later on with a very cheap Muirhill which cost £1,000. Ten years on we bought our 8100 for the then princely sum of £2,000. The engine was done for and hence the Powerstar engine conversion. Powerstar engines are thin on the ground now but there must be a few about fitted in NH TX 66 combines. We have one of these engines fitted in our TW 15 loader tractor, rated at 270 hp and revs to 3,000 rpm. Despite these "modern" tractors, we are still have three Fordsons, (one with a Dorset engine) earning their keep. The NH Powerstar engines came in at the end of a Golden Age of cheap Tractors and engines that were all mechanically governed, simply to run and work on. I'm pleased that you now have a 8100 and look forward to seeing it "gently" restored, Ralph

No, TW20 replaced 9700, TW10 replaced 8700 and they then introduced the TW30

Really interesting hearing about the history of the 8100 and the other models in Ford's line up at the time. I know it came a few years after but where did the 7810 fit in? I remember when I was driving a 7710 being very jealous of the smart 7810 the neighbouring farmer had. But looking back now, for a 6 cylinder tractor the 7810 was in the 100hp range, about the same as the 7710. Who bought the 7810 rather than a 4 cylinder 7710 or going up into the 8000 series or even a TW? They seemed popular at the time but wondering what the selling point was now!

78 came along well in to the Gen 2's and was competition for the CaseIH 956XL, Case 1594, JD3350 etc. Well balanced, smooth pulling, fairly compact 6cyl.

@@LordMuck Thanks for that, yeah that makes sense, 7810 certainly was a compact tractor compared to the 8000s which looked massive by comparison. We also ran a 2WD IH 1056XL along side the 7710. Loved that tractor, the sound it made was amazing. Much more power low down that the 7710 - needed the turbo spun up to get the power!

Remember by the time the 10 Series (and the later 00 Series) had began, the big 8000's had gone, replaced by the TW's. The only 8000 left and to continue was the 8210.

@@LordMuck Oh didn't realize the 8210 was the only 8000 left at that time. Never saw many TWs where I lived (Northumberland) but the big 30 series Power Shifts seemed to get popular - didn't realise they replaced the TWs until your video. Thanks again love your videos.

One of the main problems of the 8100 was the alignment between engine and gearbox some of them used to wear th splines in the pto fly wheel hub and shaft if these went it was a major job cab off split between engine and box and split between box and axle the problem was the tolerances in the engine to box adaptor plate at the time there was a ford service bulletin about it when I lived up Oswestry area there was a contractor from around Wrexham who put a larger Dorset engine in is with a turbo and he used it for local tractor pulling events and it always won its class

It was done over 18 months ago, fully rebuilt engine, ancillaries, bushes, pipes etc, just needs a bit of welding on the cab and a coat of paint but I'm not doing that. I have about 5 other projects on the go and as the 3C was completed I had room for another.

Deere is almost done, just replaced an O ring on the hydraulic system. Got a new set of original front fenders for it.

Great video very interesting muck, what a coincidence were on about changing one of our claas's for a Ford 8630 super q or something similar , we just want something with a bit more grunt on the spreader, and have always wanted one beautiful machines they are and are there any things I should look out for when buying one? Any common problems, would be much appreciated cheers muck

If it's an 8630, find out if it's had a replacement block/engine and if it's around 5000 hours just be careful. Check transmission through all gears backwards and forwards (there's details about fault codes online) The rest is just straight forward stuff.

Was done about 18 months ago. Completely rebuilt engine, ancillaries, bushes etc. Just needs a bit of welding in the rear corner of the cab and then painting but I'm not going to paint it.

my Dad had one for years, bought new in 1979, kept thinking he should of waited for a TW10 as it was used as a ploughing tractor. From memory the engine needed constant overhauls on it, it kept breaking the rear wheels and in the end (as it had 2 assistor rams on it the rear housing cracked up around the pto shaft and then the final drive That said a good tractor through remembered with fond memories as in 1980 it was a big tractor to me

I think they only ever had one assisted ram which was the biggest issue. Personally I'd take a 2715e over a 401 especially for longevity of life once you'd sorted any issues. For heavy work TW would have been worth waiting for. 8100 was designed primarily to give more grunt driving foragers, not for heavy draught work.

@@LordMuck yes, it came with one assistor ram on the left. The tractor, upon getting a 180-90 was downgraded in the early 80s to a 3m power harrow drill and an extra ram was added because of this. Boy was it slow to lift though. I guess the weight of the drill pull too hard on the top link cracking the rear end around the pto area. However a steel plate was made to hold it together and it carried on for many years until the underside of the epicyclic housing cracked on the right hand axle. That said, even with engine woes it was an ok tractor. It was sold with the problems back in 2000 for £2k. The paintwork, tinwork, metalwork and inside the cab was still almost like new still with no dents or rot. It would of been an great restoration project. Yes I had heard it was really a pto tractor and also in Belgium where it was designed, they wanted a high speed road tractor. Our one would do probably 25mph on the road. Scary considering everything else in those days was doing about 17mph I found the original receipt for it recently. It came from D Rowe & Co chichester with a 4 furrow ransome plough back in Sept 79

Those were all the same issues Doe's had when fitting single and twin assisters, including having to fit plates and brackets etc, nearly every one built being slightly different. 8100 was designed back in Basildon, not Belgium but EVA in Belgium had the bathtub carrier from their own 7000 series adaptions so this was a simple fix. The design team at County wanted to beef it up further but Ford didn't want it to just become another County product so it always just fell short of it's true potential. Fiat 180-90 was another example of a great tractor being pushed just a little too far with many of them suffering crown wheel failure. Lovely tractors though all the same.

I know exactly what you mean I was a young man who was nuts on tractors and a contractor near cirencester had a 8100 Ford with a 719 forager the music was fantastic to my ears I had a opportunity to drive a muir hill 717 it had a sliding door to get in the cab you sat down in the cab but the tractor that sticks in my mind is a Ford 5000 with a truck engine it was a beast it pulled a Howard 250 rotary spreader and it beat a deutz 370 with a silage trailer the smoke the old girl put out was something else my whole family was upset when she had to go because dad's boss went over to lease hire of massey ferguson s ie 3650s today I have a 3650on our own farm what a tractor but 😁 lol I would say that I love all tractors the tractor cab is my favourite place if life gets to demanding take care my old mate

I’ve just brought my first tractor got a Massey Ferguson 3630 it’s in good condition so doesn’t need a restoration just a few little gremlins to sort out a little leak from a filter and the left side door mainly and a few electrical gremlins in the dash nothing major very Pleased with it although I seem to have to same worry over it as I do my own children hope that feeling goes away as the misses feels like she’s now sharing me with the tractor 😂

Put that Dorset engine in a D-Series truck and you have trouble with a capital T. I worked for a Manchester haulage company that bought 4 off them in 1965. I was the first mechanic in the country to overhaul one, they seized up for fun and Ford didn't know why and kept just replacing engines, they had to take the 360 cu inch off the assembly line to replace the damaged ones. One day when I was working on one the thermostat opened and when I revved it up the top water hose closed off because it was too soft, the water pumps suction closed the top hose completely until the revs dropped, this caused the flow of water to stop, the engine overheated and seized on No. 5 and 6 cylinders pulling the dry liners down and snapping the bottom of the liners off. I told Ford about this and they immediately changed all top hoses with a better product. The 330 cu in and 4cylinder variants run for ever as did the 360 after a top hose change.

Lord Muck. I changed three out of the four we had before I found the fault with the top radiator hose so God knows how many were changed across the country but that Ford all over they let the customer do their quality control and find the faults. We had a similar problem with the Trader 75s with the 6D engines, the spill rail was inside the Rocker Cover and when they leaked it filled the sump with diesel, it was only when one off the drivers mentioned that the oil was rising up the dip stick that we realised what was happening.

79 was underpowered I always felt. The 2715E has liners so if there are any issues, new liners can be fitted easily enough.

I have just watched your video about the ford 8830 and one of the last things I did in the tractor industry was to go on a course to boreham house on the thirty series circa 1990 we where told that ford had given the gearbox casting to funk transmitions and told them to fit in a18 speed auto Matic transmition and ford where working with another company called dickie John who designed the brain to work the transmition I think the box was fixed Untermeyer the seat just before the tractor came out John deere bought funk transmitions and told told there dealers to say ford where using there gearbox this was not true because most of the internals where off the shelf parts being used in many other automatic gearboxes dickie John where a company that worked with other tractor manufacturers and I think they designed the Massey Ferguson electrical controlled hydraulic system which suffered early on in its life with damp uk weather

The Ford Funk unit was different to the JD Powershift in that it was less robust but much more refined. Yes, Dickie John did a lot of groundbreaking electronic control systems that today we take for granted.
