What's great about classic tractors is that they require minimal maintenance. What's bad about them is you really have to know what maintenance actually needs to be done to prevent hefty bills 😄

When I was a kid in the 80's / early 90's I was friendly with the farmer over the road, lovely old boy, would do anything for anyone if he could. He had a variety of classic kit but the daily workhorse was a Massey 595. First tractor I ever rode in that was. He had it from new right up to about 2015/6 when he retired and sold the farm yard (the fields were leased if I remember but the house and yard were his). Shite new build houses on it all now. At least they left the conker trees.

The one for me would be the case 1455, spent a fair amount of time on one in my younger days. Great tractor, and the whistle from them was something else👌👌 I recently sorted a IH 674, not to show room just to working condition and I’m still getting over the cost of it☹️☹️

Don't know if you class it as a "real" tractor, but a Ford 1500 would be ideal for looking after a few acres at the stables and small enough to live in the storage tent we have.

Lucky enough to own a 7810 Ford and recently a 6410 Ford both gen 3. My dad had a 7810 jubilee when new when he was still dairy farming this was traded for a 7840 this was sold when he sold the cows. When I was a kid he bought a 6810 which I loved and always wanted a 7810 to go with it, the 6810 was sold but is still local. Then I bought my 7810 from Forsyth farm work in Warwickshire one owner tractor in 2015 and fully restored it before prices boomed and have recently bought the 6410 from France with 3300h on very tidy example. Personally I love the super q cab it’s still a comfy and quiet cab even by today’s standards

The classic from that era for me would be the ford 8210 gen 111 we had one on the farm where I worked we also had a 7810 although the power output was similar the physical size and weight of the 8210 meant it was on top of the job especially on the big slurry tanker

I think modern tractors are for contractors, classic tractors are great for farmers and collectors for investments or a hobby, I run a fleet of classics and get told by modern tractor owners that I should buy a new one 🙄. I really couldn’t care less for a new one, just because a tractors new doesn’t mean it doesn’t break down.

Having said what I've got, I'm going to throw a complete wildcard into the mix now. I drove a lot of very nice hire and demo tractors back in the day, and drove lovely machines for contractors I worked for. Things like a Ford 8630 stand out (just scrapes into the criteria!) and the MBTrac 1100 I was stuck on with a 14ton Warwick trailer for my first silage season straight out of school. But my favourite ever drive was a 1990 Deutz 6.60 Intrac! Coleman Engineering at Dunmow seemed to struggle to get anyone wanting to have a demo, and through a contractor I was doing a lot for at the time, I had it for about a fortnight. Trailer work was it's forte, but I did a load of landwork with it too, and I loved it.

@@LordMuck It was amazing on a trailer doing roadwork 30 years ago. Close on 30mph, and with the cab at the front you could see down the sides of the trailers so much better than when it was only a couple of feet behind you. And big nearly equal wheels and a Tonka toy airseat gave as lovely ride, before all this fancy suspension that we're spoiled with now. (Says me, who was driving an MBTrac the previous year!)

Tractor. International 884, cab, MFWD, 16 speed w/ torque amplifier 1983 or 84 model. After this series the tractor took on the aero modern look, prefer the older square grill of model 84 series. Not quite the 100 hp class of your 7810, yet a nice shade of red 🚜👌🍶

I forgot my nomination - JD2850 with the MC1 cab, don't mind which transmission, because it was well balanced on a loader, comfortable stockman's tractor, reliable-ish. held its value, quite a nice place to spend the day. Second place would be the Case CX90 just because it had the least warranty claims Case ever experienced with a tractor model, even if it was a bit light on a loader.

I had that kind of surprise for two Claas tedder braces over £100 each. Chequebook wielder delivered me a £35 rod (enough to go both) and asked me to make them instead. Still looking out for a decent right-hand door for a 6610 AP cab after he tweaked it on a gate post how he didn't break the glass rather than popping it out I don't know I managed to straighten most of it out enough to get the glass to fit comfortably back in but the still an inch or two gap at the bottom and still to open on the catch. Not the end of the world but also not looking forward to straw chopping this winter though look less forward to the price as that never seems to be delivered with lube.

I’m still going to say John Deere 4240S. It’s right in the middle of the age group your looking at and it was the tractor that was on my wall as a kid. As a 13 year old the farm I worked on had a 3040 but our contractor had a 4240S and that just looked amazing with the bar axles the great noise and the impression of raw power. The piggy bank is growing and one day one might turn up 🤞 it’ll dwarf rte Dexter and 995 we’re currently running 😂😂

I would love a county 974 as we have an 1174 which we used on dump trailers back in the day and apparently it worked with a 974 which on the road would out run the six cylinder 1174 as it was nearly as much hp in a lighter tractor. If I had the space it would be an International 1056XL (ideally a IH one in bright red not a Case). I do love Fords but as a young lad I got to drive an almost new then B reg 1056. It was such a beautiful machine. Sounded amazing: deep 6 cylinder growl but a whistling whining exhaust note too. Such a comfortable cab too and a smooth gear change. Such a joy to drive many happy memories so would love to have one again or even have a go on one again. Also would love any 10 series Ford or a TW. How come you got a 7810 when you prefer the 8210?

I've said it before I'm sure, but the John Deere 2850 was probably the best tractor of its size ever made. With regular servicing it would do 10000 hours without even trying. The classic tractor for me is the Ford 8340 I fell in love with it in 2013 watching KZbin and I was lucky enough to drive one and I loved it really power house and since 2013 I've wanted one and I've been saving since thst day and I'm finally there able to buy one and now I'm looking out for a good one I like but there's many reason I like them they look beautiful, so powerful, really reliable and the first tractor me and my dad agreed on which was a good tractor 😂

well normally i'd say a JD 4955 cause bigger is better but reality a JD 4455 4WD ticks all the boxes. nice compact machine 140hp ish, still very usable today for every farm job. being small/maneuverable for yard duties and big/powerful enough for draft and heavy trailer work. what would be your choice for a good all round farm tractor in the 80's-90's bracket Kurt??

@@LordMuck one of the few MF's i'd happily drive. regarding restoration budgets on tractors there positively cheap compared to steam engines as a basic boiler over haul is in the 20 - 40K range!!

Another excellent video 👍 so true about owning a classic tractor. Ever since I was a little boy I dreamed of owning a tractor 23 years later I had the chance to buy one unfortunately it was in horrific condition. But as you said the fun part is getting her running and in a working condition. It's getting there slowly after a year and half of ownership I did my first trip on the road this weekend 8 mile round trip. And loved it. So the answer to your question is I always wanted a 1980 international 884 sekura cab with a loader. Luckily I brought one. Going on to cab parts Sekura cabs can you find door latches anywhere no you can't. they are like rocking horse shit. I think i have spent more on parts then I did buying the tractor 🤣🤣 but hey it's good fun

Another great video from yourself Mucka👍 Once you start down the road of getting classics in a more presentable, not even concourse condition can be heart breaking, definitely not helped by oem genuine parts prices that’s for sure but keeping the classics in good working examples will be import more so in the future because how many of these modern sensor based machines will be around in 30+ years time, I would bet not many if any!!! For me I hate to say it but this time not a blue machine 🤭🤫 but be a MF 3080 datatronic, way ahead of their time as far as technology goes and decent examples are still managing to do a relatively decent days work, even made an appearance on Tomorrow’s World, if you remember that show. They definitely did have there issues more so in the metal panel department especially cab (definitely not great for all those electronics) and wing areas but mechanically decent if looked after. Definitely looking forward to seeing you getting torn in about the 7810, hopefully you get it back to as close to original as possible without breaking the bank only way to do it in my opinion if funds allow. You must like the old girl just a little mate!!! 🐶🚜🛠👍👌
